My research activity is focused on Machine Learning and, more generally, Artificial Intelligence. I am currently working on Multi-Layer Convolutional Deep Architectures for feature extraction from images and videos. My current research project involves the development of adaptive filters based on principles from Information Theory (Developmental Visual Agents). My recent contributes are related to Kernel Methods and Regularization Theory in the Semi-Supervised setting (Learning from Constraints). I proposed Kernel functions that can be used to learn from supervised sets (e.g. medical rules for breast cancer prognosis and diabetes diagnosing, or rules on the frequency of words in document collections/newsgroups). My interests include Manifold Regularization algorithms, Similarity Measure Learning, Neural Networks and Kernel Machines, with application to Computer Vision. Other Software Developement I am the developer of: - LapSVMp ( an efficient Matlab implementation of the primal training of Laplacian Support Vector Machines. - The V.EN.US. System ( a visual tool for the automatic enhancement of face pictures. It is based on artificial intelligence algorithms and on image warping, and it has been used (and evaluated) in public events. - The Active Appearance Model Java Library ( ci), a powerful Java implementation of the Active Appearance Model algorithm by means of a 3D software renderer. - ART.I.ST, ARTificial Intelligence caricaturist ( an automatic caricaturing software. Events I took part in the organization of the public event Festival of Creativity, held in Florence, ITALY ( in December 2006 and October I was presenting the research activity of the Artificial Intelligence Research Group (University of Siena), and publicly testing the V.EN.US. System. Misc I am the creator and the maintainer of the FEPS dataset ( /~artist/feps). It is a collection of more than 800 frontal view face picture from famous face databases, with the addiction of manually labeled feature points for benchmarking feature localization algorithms.
