3 Hartlepool College of Further Education Higher Education 2013 Made Easy - A Students Guide Fees & Funding - the key facts If you re starting a HE course from September 2013, you will pay nothing for your education until you complete the course and earn over 21,000. Information re prices Part-Time Course Fees From September 2013, the course fees for the College s part-time HE offer start from 1950 per year. Full-Time Course Fees From September 2013, the course fee for the College s full-time HE offer is 5500 per year. See table at the back of this document for specific course fees. Funding your studies Loans Loans are financial products students will have to pay back. For , there are two main types of loans available for HE students: Tuition Fee Loan - you don t have to pay your fees upfront. The government makes a tuition fee loan available to all eligible students to cover the full cost of fees each year. This loan is not means tested so any eligible student who secures a place at university can use the loan to cover the fees each year regardless of their household income. With the exception of students wishing to study the PGCE, if you already have a degree-level qualification, you may not be entitled to a tuition fee loan. Please contact the College for further details. Maintenance Loan for Living Costs - Full-time students can apply for a Maintenance Loan to help with living costs. Maintenance Loans are paid into your bank account at the start of each term. Part-time students cannot apply for a Maintenance Loan. The
4 Hartlepool College of Further Education Higher Education 2013 Made Easy - A Students Guide exact amount full-time students can borrow depends on: Loans your family s income where you live what year of study you re in what help you get through the Maintenance Grant Grants A grant is a financial product that DOES NOT have to be paid back. For , there are a number of grants available for full-time HE students: Maintenance Grant for Living Costs - you can apply for a Maintenance Grant to help with your living costs. Maintenance Grants are available to students whose household income is 42,875 or less. Your household income is your parents or partner s income and your own. The maximum Maintenance Grant is 3,250 a year if your household income is under 25,000. Special Support Grant - If you get or qualify for Income Support or Housing Benefit you may get the Special Support Grant instead of the Maintenance Grant. The amount you can get through the Special Support Grant is the same as that available through the Maintenance Grant but it won t reduce how much you get for your Maintenance Loan. You are likely to qualify for the Special Support Grant if: you re a single parent your partner is also a student you have certain disabilities Childcare Grant - the Childcare Grant could cover as much as 85 per cent of your childcare costs during term time and holidays. If you re eligible, the amount you may get will depend on: your household income the cost of your childcare the number of children you have This could be up to per week if you have one child, or 255 per week if you have two or more children.
5 Hartlepool College of Further Education Adult Dependents Grant the Adult Dependents Grant could provide extra help if you are a full-time HE student with an adult who depends on you financially. The amount you get depends on your income and the income of your dependents up to a maximum of Bursaries Institute for Learning (IfL) if you wish to follow the Certificate in Education or Professional Graduate Certificate in Education, the IfL offers bursaries of Those who intend to teach basic Maths and/or English in the post-school sector can get bursaries of Further Allowances Parents Learning Allowance this allowance helps towards your course costs such as books, material and travel. You could get between 50 and 1508 for 2012/13 depending on our household income. Tax Credits You can claim Child Tax Credit if you have children. Working students can also claim Working Tax Credit. If you claim the childcare element of Working Tax Credit you can t also claim the Childcare Grant. HE Funding FAQs 1) How much will my fees cost? The simple answer is that no student will pay upfront fees for their HE course. All students (full- and part-time) will be eligible for a non-means tested loan to cover tuition fees. The amount you borrow depends on the cost of your HE course and, at HCFE; fees start from just over 4800, part-time fees start from ) Where do I get my loan from? Tuition and Maintenance loans are provided by Student Finance England. Please speak to either Gill Brough, Sharon Collier or the College s Student Services team for further details. Alternatively, see the Useful Contacts section overleaf.
6 Hartlepool College of Further Education Higher Education 2013 Made Easy - A Students Guide HE Funding FAQs 3) When do I get my loan? Once your application has been processed by Student Finance England you will receive a breakdown of your entitlement and a payment schedule. The College and/or Teesside University will have to verify that you have enrolled onto your course and that you are attending before any payments are released. 4) How much do I pay back? Repayments will be 9% of income above 21,000, so the amount repaid each month will depend on earnings. Someone earning 21,500 currently the salary of a newlyqualified teacher would initially make repayments of just 3.75 per month. The monthly repayment would increase to: for someone earning 24,000 per year on a salary of 25, on 27, on 30,000 If the person s income falls below 21,000 repayments will stop. All outstanding loan amounts will be written off after 30 years. The 21,000 threshold will increase in line with earnings from 2016 onwards. 5) Where can I find information relating to available grants? The Directgov website has a section specifically for student finance for See the Useful Contacts section below.
