3 Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time August 23, 2015 FOCUS: Following God requires commitment. Following God is not an occasional thing. It requires a commitment much like we see in today s readings. Joshua calls together the tribes to renew their covenant with God. Paul explains that the commitment between husband and wife is the model for Christ and his Church. Peter confesses the commitment of the Twelve to follow Christ, for he has words of everlasting life. Perhaps today is a good day to re-examine the level of our commitment to Jesus. LITURGY OF THE WORD: In the first reading, when Joshua asks the tribes to renew their commitment to God, they respond, We will serve the Lord. In Ephesians, where Paul is speaking of how marriage is like Christ and the Church, he says, And the two shall become one flesh. In John s Gospel, the disciples react to Jesus teaching about the Eucharist, and some leave. Peter, however, proclaims that Jesus is the Christ. REFLECTION: When we eat and drink the meal offered us at this Eucharist do we realize the choice Jesus gave his disciples is also put before us? But the very fact we come forward to eat and drink is a sign of the Spirit s life in us and that Spirit will enable us to say what Peter said, "To whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life." So we ask ourselves: Do our daily choices reveal to others our choice to follow Jesus? How can we further commit ourselves to him today? Mass Schedule For August 29th & 30th 5:30PM 6:30AM 8:00AM 9:30AM (Guitar) Celebrant: Father Miller Lector: Kate Meredith Altar Servers: Ed Kiely, Hannah Boyle, Julie Eisenmann Celebrant: Father Miller Lector: Celine Severino Celebrant: Father Bonner Lector: Rita Malfara Altar Servers: Isabel Isaac, Jeremy Higgins, Madeline Eiser Celebrant: Father Bonner Lector: Michelle Riccobono Altar Servers: Erin O Reilly, Joseph Corrigan, Danielle Miller 11:00 AM Celebrant: Father Lucas Lector: John Scafidi Altar Servers: Will Marcinkowski, Matt Marcinkowski, Chelsey Criollo 12:30PM Celebrant: Father Lucas Lector: Rose Messina Altar Servers: Caitlin Garlick, Caitlyn McGovern, Kylie Duggan 3 Whenever we fail to care for our brothers and sisters in creation, the way is opened to destruction, and hearts are hardened...lord, grant that all who have positions of responsibility in economic, political and social life, and all men and women of goodwill grant that we all be protectors of creation, protectors of God s plan inscribed in nature, protectors of one another and of the environment. - based on a plea from Pope Francis Pope Francis has established an annual day of global prayer for the Care of Creation to boost support for the environment. The first Day of Prayer next month coincides with the buildup to a worldwide conference to roll back the peril of climate change. In a recent letter, the Pope stated I wish to inform you that I have decided to institute in the Catholic Church the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, which beginning this year is to be celebrated on September 1. Second Collection this weekend is being taken up for The Catholic University. Thank you for supporting America s Catholic university and the countless number of students who will experience an education grounded in Catholic tradition. #179
