3 What is SDEO? Scottish Dental Education Online national collaboration project of five Scottish Dental Schools (3 year project) NHS Education for Scotland University of Aberdeen Dental School University of Dundee Dental School University of Edinburgh Postgraduate Dental Institute University of Glasgow Dental School

4 What issue was SDEO addressing? Technology- enhanced learning showed benefits elsewhere, not realised in Scotland (Ellaway & Dewhurst, 2007) Healthcare education and training across Scotland - disparate & multifaceted The Dental Team complex - consisting of dental practitioners, dental nurses, therapists, technicians, hygienists & practice managers Education delivered by multiple organisations including Unis, FE Colleges, Royal Colleges, NHS, private etc.

5 SDEO - Objectives SDEO aims to: build multiple digital resources covering selected dental curriculum topics develop resources using agreed standards & specifications to meet technical, ethical and legal requirements ensure compatibility with various technology platforms (inc mobile) make resources accessible from a central, secure searchable repository always use dental experts to quality- assure all resources make resources available for sharing across the wider dental, medical & healthcare professional communities

12 SDEO Governance of a shared repository Issues of consent, copyright, general use (access, upload & download) Five basic principles to be adopted: only hold data with clear copyright permission exclude patient identifiable data exclude plagiarised, defamatory, obscene or offensive material only ever hold data in EEA materials provided (where possible) in accessible formats (UK Copyright and Visually Impaired Persons Act, 2002)

(e.g what stage were they in their career) There were at least 3 resources, where individuals registered, but no one completed why? Relevance? Content of the package? Presentation? Assumed prior knowledge?

Virtual Patients benefits: able to describe difficult clinical & non clinical scenarios able to describe non- routine situations Learners can repeat scenario many times, practicing various approaches to understand how actions lead to outcomes able to provide feedback from (virtual) patient s perspective support understanding of holistic approach to healthcare SAFE no patients are harmed
