Game Details Game title: Patient Z Game description: Sell your game what is it about? What kind of game is it? Who is it for? Patient Z is a game about the body s ability to fend of diseases. In it, you play Dr. Szechuan Johnson, a research scientist employed the top secret B.O.D.Y.S.H.O.C.K project, funded by the Australian military. Dr. Johnson is investigating the mysterious case of Patient Z, a test subject suffering from a range of strange medical ailments, which seem to be rapidly rising in number with every passing hour, after a mysterious virus destroys their immune system and leaves them vulnerable to attack from disease. A revolutionary technology funded by B.O.D.Y.S.H.O.C.K allows Dr. Johnson, housed in a titanium-plated submersible device, to be shrunk to a microscopic size and injected into the patient s body via their femoral artery. With the clock ticking, he will travel throughout their body via their bloodstream, investigating their anatomy from within and attempting to keep them alive. Dr. Johnson s assistant, Dr. Margaret Wood, will be constantly updating Dr. Johnson as new diseases develop within the patient s body. Armed with a range of diagnostic and treatment instruments, you take control of Dr. Johnson s submersible, navigating through the body while locating and treating diseases, fighting off the antibodies who threaten to destroy his vehicle, healing injured organs, and hopefully discovering the answer to the question who is Patient Z? The game is a top down twin-stick shooter reminiscent of Smash TV or Hotline Miami. The overhead view also features readouts from Dr. Wood s diagnostic gear, the instruments panel of Dr. Johnson s submersible, and a searchable index of diseases, treatments, and pieces of data telling the story of Patient Z. Platform: Eg. Windows, OSX, ios, android The game will be developed for Windows, but a Mac/Linux port may be made available if there is a demand. System reqs (if needed): Eg. gtx270, ios 5.0+, android kitkat+, windows 7+ The game will require at least an i3 and a dedicated graphics card for full 1080p output.
Game Development Diary Your game development diary allows you to document your progress throughout the stem video game challenge. It is a key part of your assessment and is just as important as your game. Your completed GDD will show us how you made your game, what decisions you made, and how your work has evolved.
Visuals Phase one What have you been working on? What have you been using? Are you planning or building? The game s look is based on pixel art from the 1980 s and early 1990 s, and we have been working in Photoshop to design characters, monsters, and weapons using colored blocks. We have also been working on the game s menus and toolbars. We want the menus to work, but also to look like they are pieces of equipment from Dr. Johnson s submersible, so we re drawing them using blocks, like our characters and weapons. Sound What have you been working on? What have you been using? Are you recording? Composing? We have not recorded a lot of sound yet we want the sounds to be similar to chiptune music and 8-bit sound effects, and we are still learning how we can do that on modern PC s. Writing What have you been writing? Have you been writing story or dialogue? We have written a lot of the story of Patient Z, and a lot of the in-game notes and audio recordings which tell the story of who Patient Z is. We ve also been writing a lot of mission descriptions, which means that we ve had to research a lot of different diseases and come up with ways to put them into the game. We wanted Dr. Johnson to fight off a flu virus, so we needed to look up the flu on Wikipedia and learn about where in the body the flu is most likely to start. In the game, the flu starts in the lungs, that is where Dr. Johnson needs to go to fight the flu before it spreads. We ve also written missions around perforated eardrums, liver cancer, Typhoid, and SARS.
Gameplay What kind of game are you making? How does it play? What have you been doing to create gameplay? In Patient Z players see the game from a top down view they can see Dr. Johnson s submersible, and the game is played on a multi-screen, body shaped map. If Dr. Johnson is in Patient Z s leg, and Dr. Wood tells him that an infection has broken out in the heart, Dr. Johnson must make his way up the leg, across the pelvis, up the belly, and into the chest. The map is not a perfect map of the body that would be too complicated, so we have decided that Patient Z will have thirty screens, with each one being a different body part. The maps themselves aren t too hard to make a screen of a leg will be a thin tunnel, while a screen of the brain will be much larger. We want to make players feel like they are exploring a body, while learning about diseases and having fun. Designing Dr. Johnson s submersible has been difficult as we have not yet decided on the best way to make it move. We can t decide between having it move one square at a time, or trying to find a way to have full motion. We might need help to do that in the next couple of months. Designing the way Dr. Johnson s medical instruments work has also been tough. We want different diseases to require different instruments and treatments. The flu needs to be treated with a shot of antibiotics which come from his Antibiotic Lance, but a brain tumour needs to be treated with a blast from his ChemoBlade. It s not too hard, but we ve needed to learn about the ways that different diseases are treated. Challenges What challenges have you faced? How have they been overcome? What is left to address? Figuring out how to make the player control Dr. Johnson s vehicle has been hard. We might need to see if we can use a physics engine, but we don t know how hard that will be, or whether we have time. If we don t, we might need to make it tile based movement but, that s going to change a lot of the way the game plays. We want to implement gamepad support for 360 controllers, but we haven t had a chance to look up how that works yet. There might be a plugin that we need that does it automatically. We also wanted Dr. Wood s messages about new diseases to show up on the HUD automatically, but we weren t sure how to do that without blocking the gameplay. We found a way around that if a player presses the backspace key, new reports pop up on the side of the screen. We want to make it so that the reports look like they are on a piece of lined notepaper, so we are designing that now.
Content examples Copy and paste some examples of your work images from the game, images of characters, development sketches, sample text, or design notes are all acceptable. Flu Virus Sprite Ebola Bacteria Sprite Dr. Johnson s Sub Sprite

STEM Content: This game demonstrates an understanding of STEM content in a number of areas. It draws on medical science in terms of our characters, setting and plot. It uses chemistry and physics for our weapons and game design. It also relies on technology and engineering in terms of the coding and construction of the game, the kinds of in-game assets that we have created, and the way that the game s code functions. References. Have you used material from other sites, repositories, or resources. Why have you used them, where are the originals located, and what are they bringing to your project? We have used pixel art guides from Wikipedia, and we have looked up medical textbooks for our writing.
