Internet of things and cloud computing Espen Braathe IM Tigerteam Europe
We know the world is becoming smaller and flatter. Something else is going on that may ultimately have a greater impact on business and society. The world is about to become smarter. This is quite literally about how the world works the world s infrastructure is becoming intelligent.
In 2001, there were 60 million transistors for every human on the planet... by 2010 there will be 1 billion transistors per human each costing 1/10 millionth of a cent.
Millions of units shipped 2,000,000 1,000, ,000 Internet of Things 10,000 5,000 1,000 S/360 IBM PC World Wide Web Source: IDC, SSR and IBM Market Insights
In 2005 there were 1.3 billion RFID tags in circulation by 2010 there will be 33 billion.
Worldwide mobile telephone subscriptions reached 3.8 billion in 2009 and expected to reach 5 billion by the end of this year
An estimated 2 billion people will be on the Web by and a trillion connected objects cars, appliances, cameras, roadways, pipelines comprising the "Internet of Things."
In distributed computing environments 85% of computing capacity sits idle. In six years the power consumption of a server has risen from 8 watts to more than 100 watts per $1,000 worth of technology. On average, for every 100 units of energy piped into a data center, only 3 units are used for actual computing. More than half goes to cooling the servers.
Instrumented Interconnected Intelligent Companies, Institutions, Industries Man-Made Systems Nature s Systems
IBM cloud computing Yet today s IT infrastructure is under tremendous pressure and is finding it difficult to keep up It will reach a breaking point 85% idle In distributed computing environments, up to 85 percent of computing capacity sits idle 66% 66 percent is spent on maintaining current IT infrastructures versus adding new capabilities 82% Percentage of executives who report a security breach and aren t confident they can prevent future breaches 78% Percentage of CIOs who want to improve the way they use and manage their data IBM Corporation
Dynamic infrastructure: Helping build a smarter planet By 2011, the world will be 10 times more instrumented then it was in Internet connected devices will leap from 500M to 1 Trillion. Exabytes 1,800 1,600 1,400 1,200 1, x growth in five years RFID, Digital TV, MP3 players, Digital cameras, Camera phones, VoIP, Medical imaging, Laptops, smart meters, multi-player games, Satellite images, GPS, ATMs, Scanners, Sensors, Digital radio, DLP theaters, Telematics, Peer-to-peer, , Instant messaging, Videoconferencing, CAD/CAM, Toys, Industrial machines, Security systems, Appliances Approximately 70% of the digital universe is created by individuals, but enterprises are responsible for 85% of the security, privacy, reliability, and compliance IBM Corporation
IBM Sensor Solutions Agile businesses will embrace the reality and the possibilities Our world is becoming INSTRUMENTED Sensors New Data Our world is becoming INTERCONNECTED Event Processing & Integration New Insights All things becoming INTELLIGENT Visualization & Tuning Process Innovation New & Optimized Business Processes Leaders today are benefiting from new sensor data when combined with IBM s business process management, event processing & business optimization capabilities 12 IBM Confidential 2009 IBM Corporation
Dynamic infrastructure: Helping build a smarter planet However, our infrastructure systems are reaching a breaking point. Explosion of data, transactions, and digitally-aware devices strains IT infrastructure and operations. Exponential growth in communications subscribers and services exposes bandwidth limitations. Supply inefficiencies and demand spikes tax energy and utility systems. Clogged and congested roadways impact productivity. Networks, supply chains, and borders face a proliferation of new risks and threats. Meanwhile, customer expectations and competitive pressures are increasing IBM Corporation
IBM cloud computing and address the challenges IT groups are facing today. Doing more with less Reduce capital expenditures and operational expenses Reducing risk Ensure the right levels of security and resiliency across all business data and processes Higher quality services Improve quality of services and deliver new services that help the business grow and reduce costs Breakthrough agility Increase ability to quickly deliver new services to capitalize on opportunities while containing costs and managing risk IBM Corporation
IBM cloud computing There are three ways to acquire IT capabilities Software, hardware and services Pre-integrated systems and appliances Provided as services Cloud computing is a new delivery and consumption model or methodology spanning all 3 ways IBM Corporation
