1 STRATEGIC PLAN Effective communication and safe swallowing a right for all Australians across their lifespan

2 01 Strategic Imperative Influence 1.1 Speech Pathology Australia (SPA) is the leading organisation for policy-relevant information and data regarding communication and swallowing disorders SPA investigates and implements high impact, cost-effective strategies to develop and disseminate policy-relevant data to support SPA policy positions; SPA develops up-to-date, evidence-based, policy-relevant statements and positions to support the development and/or response to policy in areas that impact on speech pathology professional practice; SPA develops strategic alliances with key agencies, associations and bodies to better enable dissemination of policy-relevant information and data where needed; SPA develops member capacity in relation to accessing and using policy-relevant messages about communication and swallowing disorders. Report on prevalence and social and economic impact of communication and swallowing disability, with recommendations to government [note: Senate Inquiry confirmed but additional research may be required to supplement or add to Inquiry findings/outcomes] Develop key policy statements for each lobbying area Key Policy and Position Statements contain updated data Stakeholder Map for relevant sectors and issues uick Facts data from each lobbying area, available for Association and member use 1.2 SPA influences policy that has a direct impact, or a potential future impact on speech pathology professional practice SPA is proactive and opportunistic in developing, promoting and responding to policy that impacts on speech pathology professional practice; SPA investigates and implements high impact strategies to achieve policy influence; SPA develops strategic alliances with key agencies, associations and bodies to enable a stronger and more influential voice; SPA develops member capacity in both development of and response to local policy, and supports members to engage with lobbying in strategic areas; SPA gathers data and evidence regarding the impact and outcomes of lobbying strategies, in order to inform future lobbying. Overarching lobbying plan and annual business plans, identifying key priorities and strategies (e.g. Speech Pathologists in Schools; Disability; Aged Care; Juvenile Justice) Key relationships identified and included within each lobbying area s business plan Partnerships with key strategic alliances relevant to lobbying areas Lobbying and Public Awareness training, associated with local policy campaigns, available for each Branch Report on policy outcomes (e.g. increase in speech pathology services) against lobbying areas

3 Strengthening the profession s standing and improving the lives of those with communication and swallowing disorders 1.3 SPA influences positive societal change in relation to communication and swallowing disorders SPA is proactive and opportunistic in promoting the opportunity to communicate as a human right and that speech pathology services transform lives; SPA investigates and implements high impact strategies to promote communication as a vital part of life and that speech pathology services transform lives; SPA builds member capacity to engage with their local communities in order to influence positive societal change; SPA develops strategic alliances with key agencies, associations and bodies to more efficiently and effectively influence positive societal change; SPA focusses on working with instead of working on behalf of people with communication and swallowing disorders. International and Australian campaign for International Communication Project (ICP) Communication Forum involving high level government, stakeholders and media participation Communication Champions trained and involved in ICP campaign Partnership/s or project support for speech pathology services and training in developing countries in the Asia-Pacific region SPA focusses on working with instead of working on behalf of people with communication and swallowing disorders

4 02 Strategic Imperative Professional Standards 2.1 SPA is the organisation that sets, monitors and regulates standards of speech pathology practice across the continuum from entry-level to advanced practice SPA sets the competency standards required for practising membership for entry-level graduates and overseas applicants; SPA sets professional practice standards; SPA sets the standards for advanced, extended and delegated practice; SPA supports competency building and/or retraining for re-entry to the profession and overseas trained applicants; SPA promotes best practice standards; SPA is the go-to organisation for standards of speech pathology practice. Updated documentation for all functions relating to CBOS 2011 (i.e. Accreditation, Overseas ualifications [OS] and Re-entry procedures) New graduate requirements established Early Career Support training modules, including options of mandatory modules for private practice Suite of training modules against CBOS areas of practice developed for Re-Entry and OS candidates Model of credentialing in advanced/extended areas of practice (with possible collaboration with universities) 2.2 SPA sets and upholds recognised standards for self-regulation SPA requires practising speech pathologists to undertake ongoing professional learning; SPA reinforces Certified Practising Speech Pathologist (CPSP) for practising members; SPA ensures that CPSP status is the recognised standard adopted by external stakeholders for practising speech pathologists; SPA promotes recognition and awareness of SPA s robust internal self-regulation processes. SPA Practising Membership requires CPSP status SPA is an approved partner in a national and recognised self-regulation framework across other (non-registered) health professions

5 Underpinning the profession s competency, currency and excellence in practice 2.3 SPA sets the standards for ethical professional practice and supports members to be evidence-based in their practice SPA defines the profession s scope of practice to ensure it encompasses current and innovative practice; SPA requires speech pathologists to be evidence-based practitioners; SPA requires that ethical standards are understood and applied by speech pathologists within all professional interactions; SPA increases recognition and awareness of SPA s robust ethical standards and complaints process. Core Association practice documents (e.g. Scope of Practice, Principles of Practice, Parameters of Practice) updated in line with CBOS and current practice Ethics Online Education Package Evidence Based Practice (EBP) Online Training Module 2.4 SPA supports members to achieve excellence in professional standards SPA provides relevant high quality Continuing Professional Development (CPD) that is innovative, widely accessible and meets the diverse need of members through the continuum of their career and across scope of practice current, evolving, and new. Professional Development Model including online learning platform

6 03 Strategic Imperative Future Ready 3.1 SPA is the lead organisation to inform and advance future directions of speech pathology SPA educates and informs national policy and advancement of the profession; SPA develops processes for identifying new and extended scope of practice; SPA promotes opportunities to expand the scope and develop new models of clinical practice; SPA provides information and resources that explain the roles and responsibilities/boundaries of other segments of the workforce including supervision and delegation relationships (e.g. support workers and assistants); SPA develops capacity in the profession to train and prepare future generations. Produce blueprint (e.g. SPA 2025 ) to inform and guide future trends and responses for the profession A report on models of clinical education to be disseminated to members along with strategies to promote within the profession Showcase (e.g. through Conference; publications) innovative models of practice Updated Scope of Practice document 3.2 SPA supports members to be future ready through innovation and new technologies SPA provides members with accurate, up-to-date, and relevant support, resources and advice; SPA provides information, resources and advice on new and innovative models of practice including new technologies; SPA utilises innovative new ways of providing CPD; SPA supports the development and expansion of a range of communication technologies (including member communities) as a forum for professional information sharing and networking. Innovative models of practice and new technologies reflected in Professional Development (PD) Framework (see 2.4) and showcased at the Conference and in publications SPA position and accreditation standards on use of Simulated Learning Environments (SLE) Member utilisation of online platforms to support communication and networking

7 Ensuring present and future capability and capacity 3.3 SPA develops leadership capacity within the profession SPA actively seeks out opportunities for alliances/partnerships in order to promote the relevance and value of speech pathology services, and the profession s contribution to high level representation and policy development; These opportunities can be organisationally driven or reflect the emerging leadership capability of members. Leadership models/training accessed by members Tracking report on formal representation roles and high level engagement by speech pathologists 3.4 SPA understands the needs and projections for the speech pathology workforce in Australia SPA maintains data sets that accurately describe the current speech pathology workforce profile; SPA utilises data and available research to support speech pathology service and consumer need projections; SPA informs national workforce planning.
