1 Academic Program Proposals for May 1, 2015 The following is a list of academic program proposals being considered for approval at the May 1, 2015, Arkansas Higher Education Coordinating Board Meeting. If you have concerns, objections, questions or comments concerning a specific proposal, please send them to Ann Clemmer, Senior Associate Director of Academic Affairs (Ann.Clemmer@adhe.edu) at ADHE no later than March 1, Arkansas State University Jonesboro Master of Science in Psychological Science The Master of Science in Psychological Science is a 36-semester credit hours program designed to provide education in basic and applied psychological research combined with advanced education in core content areas of psychology. The program is designed for graduates of undergraduate psychology programs who desire advanced-level training in psychology before seeking admission to doctoral programs in psychology or before seeking entrance into the labor force as applied researchers or community college faculty. Arkansas State University Jonesboro Graduate Certificate in Dyslexia Therapy The Graduate Certificate in Dyslexia Therapy has been designed to prepare licensed educators with the knowledge and skills necessary to obtain an endorsement as a Dyslexia Therapist to the teaching license in the state of Arkansas. The Arkansas General Assembly passed Act 1294 in the 2013 regular session to ensure that children with dyslexia have their needs met by all Arkansas public schools systems. This act was codified as A.C.A As a result of these legal mandates, the licensure endorsement program has been developed from existing courses, both didactic and practical, and with existing faculty to provide appropriate higher education experiences necessary to address the letter and intent of the act. Arkansas Tech University Bachelor of Arts in Cultural and Geospatial Studies With a focus on cultural resources management and geographic analysis within a regional context, the bachelor s degree in cultural and geospatial studies will allow students to successfully analyze spatial and cultural data in support of community development and preservation of cultural heritage. Students will gain valuable skills in community interaction, discipline-specific research methodologies, and computer cartography (geographic information systems). Black River Technical College Technical Certificate in Auto Collision Structural Repair Technology Currently, BRTC offers a one year Technical Certificate (TC) in Auto Collision Cosmetic Repair which provides the student with a year s worth of training in auto body repair. The Technical Certificate in Auto Collision Structural Repair will provide students with more specialized training in structural repair of automobiles. Combining the two TC s would provide an opportunity for graduates to obtain an Associate of Applied Science in General Technology. 1
2 Henderson State University Graduate Certificate in Dyslexia Therapy The Graduate Certificate in Dyslexia Therapy will enable licensed teachers in Arkansas to obtain the knowledge and competencies to effectively serve students needing dyslexia intervention and meet the licensure requirements for dyslexia therapists. The Arkansas General Assembly passed Act 1294 in the 2013 regular session to ensure that children with dyslexia have their needs met by all Arkansas public schools systems. This act was codified as A.C.A No later than the academic year, a school district shall have individuals to serve as dyslexia interventionists. National Park Community College Technical Certificate in Aerospace Fabrication and Repair The Aerospace Fabrication and Repair program will provide students with the skills necessary for jobs in the Aerospace Fabrication and Repair Industry. The program will produce entry level candidates who have knowledge and skills in the production and repair of metallic and composite aerospace structures, the ability to interpret technical drawings, understand aerospace production systems and have the soft skills necessary for employment. Southern Arkansas University Magnolia Master of Education in Higher, Adult, and Lifelong Education (HALE) The MEd in HALE degree program includes coursework in foundations, curriculum and teaching (including distance learning), organization and administration, research, and electives so students can create an emphasis area to fit their career aspirations. An internship in the student s emphasis area is required as the capstone exit experience. Students select either higher education or adult education emphasis area, however, students may elect to take courses in both emphasis areas. The program will be offered by distance technology. Southern Arkansas University Tech Technical Certificate in Cosmetology The Technical Certificate (TC) in cosmetology establishes a pathway from the existing Certificate of Proficiency (CP) in cosmetology and into the existing Associate of Professional Studies degree. The SAU Tech secondary career center currently operates a licensed cosmetology program through which students earn the CP through concurrent enrollment. The college-level program will duplicate the secondary program and add additional upper-level cosmetology courses for the TC. The certificate is designed to provide cosmetology education to meet the requirements of the state board of cosmetology (1500 hours) and skills standards for entry-level cosmetologists. The current secondary center coordinator will also coordinate the TC program. Adjunct instructors will teach the college program. No additional library, facility, or equipment purchases are necessary to operate the TC program. University of Arkansas- Fort Smith Bachelor of Social Work The Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) program will prepare students for state licensure and professional practice in the broad field of social work as well as to prepare them to enter graduate programs in social work. The BSW degree program is designed in accordance with the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) standards for a generalist program. UAFS will seek accreditation from CSWE for the program. 2
3 University of Central Arkansas Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Science in Anthropology Students will have the opportunity to pursue either the BA or BS in Anthropology. Anthropology is the holistic, cross-cultural study of humans and their near relatives through time and space. The study of anthropology promotes awareness and understanding of human variation on a global scale, as well as sensitivity to gender, racial, ethnic, and cultural diversity within the United States. The proposed program will be housed in the Department of Sociology, which is located in the College of Liberal Arts. Graduates of the program will: 1. Have a broad anthropological understanding of the interrelationships between culture and biology that underlie human behavior; 2. Be able to promote an awareness and comparative understanding of cultural diversity around the world and within our own communities; 3. Develop the methodological, analytical, and theoretical tools to study and understand human behavior, past or present; and 4. Have experiences in the areas of research, independent study, internships, and/or other forms of hands-on academic and professional development. 3
