3 112 Determining the Boot Device Number To etermine the evice number of your boot evice, type a comman with the following syntax: cnfg slot_number For example, to etermine the evice number of a SCSI isk rive with a controller number of 0 an a slot number of 5, you woul type the following comman: >> cnfg 5 The isk rive woul be ientifie by the wors "rz" in the comman s isplay an the evice number woul immeiately follow the "rz" (rz3, in the following example): 5: PMAZ-AA DEC V53a TCF0 (SCSI = 7) DEV PID VID REV SCSI DEV rz3 RZ56 (C)DEC DEC 0200 DIR SEQ You woul then be able to boot your system or set your system s environmental boot variable, since you woul know that the slot number of controller 0 is 5, the evice name is rz, an evice number of the boot evice attache to that controller is 3 (rz3) Note If the cnfg slot_number comman shows that you have multiple evices configure on the same controller, you will have to know which evice is the boot evice If you o not know which evice is the boot evice, consult your system aministrator 12 Setting the Console Environmental Variables The following sections explain how to set the console environmental variables for the boot an haltaction commans After your new firmware is installe, even if you are not reinstalling the ULTRIX operating system, you must reset the environmental variables for the boot an haltaction commans immeiately You can also set other console environmental variables To get a listing of all of the variables, type: >> printenv For more information about the variables an for instructions on how to set each, see your harware manual 121 Setting the boot Variable You can efine the efault bootpath an enable or isable automatic boot operations by setting specific console environmental variables, epening on whether you will be booting from the system isk or the network 1211 Setting the System Disk Boot Variable The boot variable sets the efault boot evice To set the boot variable for the system isk, use a comman with the following syntax: setenv boot slot_number/evice_name_number/unix_kernel [-a] Replace slot_number with the slot number of the isk controller that is to be the efault boot evice Replace evice_name_number with the name an the evice number of the efault boot evice Replace unix_kernel with the pathname of the unix kernel that is to be the efault kernel Use the -a switch to enable booting to multiuser moe by efault Please note that if you use the -a switch, everything after the wor "boot" must be Boot Commans for DECstation/DECsystem 5000 Moel 200 Series Processors 3

5 >> setenv haltaction h To force the system to restart when the reset button is presse, an thereby o a memory ump, set the haltaction variable to r by typing the following comman: >> setenv haltaction r 13 Booting From a Disk You can boot the system isk or an alternate isk or alternate kernel to either single-user or multiuser moe 131 Booting From the System Disk To boot the system isk to single-user or multiuser moe, type the following comman: The system boots the evice that was set in the boot console environmental variable escribe previously Note If you wish to boot the efault isk or kernel image to multiuser moe, you must make sure that when you set the boot variable initially, you use the -a switch 132 Booting From an Alternate Disk or Kernel To boot an alternate isk or kernel image to single-user or multiuser moe use a comman with the following syntax: boot slot_number/evice_name_number/unix_kernel [-a] Replace slot_number with the slot number of the controller attache to your boot evice Replace evice_name_number with the name an the number of the boot evice Replace unix_kernel with the pathname of the alternate kernel Use the -a switch to enable booting to multiuser moe For example, to boot an alternate kernel at slot 0, rive 5, to multiuser moe, you woul type the following comman: 0/rz5/vmunixnew -a 14 Booting From a TK50 Tape When oing an installation or booting the stanalone kernel for system management tasks, you may have to boot a TK50 tape After installing the TK50 boot tape, type a comman with the following syntax to etermine the evice number of the rive for your evice: cnfg slot_number For example, if the TK50 is attache to a SCSI controller at slot 5, (this is the most common configuration) you woul type the following comman: >> cnfg 5 The console subsystem isplays information that ientifies the evice number of your tape rive an various other assignments Use this information to efine the tape rive evice number when you enter the boot comman later on After isplaying ientification information, the console subsystem reissues its prompt Use a comman with the following syntax to boot your system: boot slot_number/tzevice_number Replace slot_number with the slot number of the tape controller Replace evice_number with the evice number of the SCSI tape rive from which you are booting Boot Commans for DECstation/DECsystem 5000 Moel 200 Series Processors 5

6 For example, to boot a SCSI tape (tz) at slot 5, rive 5 to single-user moe, you woul type the following comman: 5/tz5 15 Booting From a CDROM Optical Disc Kit If your CDROM optical isc is not alreay in its cay, follow the instructions in the harware manual for inserting the optical isc into the cay Follow this proceure to boot the system: Loa the CDROM optical isc into the rive Wait for the rive to be on line an reay Use a comman with the following syntax to etermine the evice number of the rive for your evice: cnfg slot_number For example, if the CDROM is attache to a SCSI controller at slot 5, (this is the most common configuration) you woul type the following comman: >> cnfg 5 A isplay appears that shows what is assigne to each evice number on your system Use a comman with the following syntax to boot your system: boot slot_number/rzevice_number/vmunix [-a] Replace slot-number with the slot number of the CDROM controller Replace evice-number with the evice number of your RRD40 optical isc rive Use the -a switch to enable booting to multiuser moe For example, to boot the system to multiuser moe from RRD40 optical isc rive number 4 on slot number 1, you woul type the following comman: 1/rz4/vmunix -a 16 Booting From the Network You boot from the network when you are: Booting a iskless system Initiating an installation from a remote server Booting a stanalone kernel from a remote server, in orer to perform system management tasks To boot the system from the network, use a comman with the following syntax: boot slot_number/mop [-a] Replace slot_number with the slot number of the network controller Use the -a switch to enable booting to multiuser moe For example, to boot from the network to multiuser moe on slot number 6, you woul type the following comman: 6/mop -a 17 Booting During the Installation This section explains how to boot your system from the system isk or, if you are a iskless client, from the kernel resiing on the iskless server uring the installation of your ULTRIX operating system During the installation, the bootstrap comman sequence is isplaye an you are aske to type this comman sequence in orer to boot your system from the system isk to continue the installation or, if you are a iskless client, from the kernel resiing on the iskless server Because of changes mae to the firmware to enhance support for the TURBOchannel, both the syntax of the bootstrap comman sequence an the slot number that is isplaye are incorrect 6 Boot Commans for DECstation/DECsystem 5000 Moel 200 Series Processors
