5 Public Community Colleges The 28 public community colleges in Michigan are individually profiled in this section. The community college provides a wide range of programs in order to meet the ever-increasing needs of the local community for educational opportunities beyond the high school level. By statute, however, a community college in Michigan may only offer course work leading to less than a baccalaureate degree. The programs offered tend to fall into the following categories: LIBERAL ARTS AND PROFESSIONAL PROGRAMS - Pre-professional training designed to provide transfer credit to four-year institutions. Dentistry, education, law, and medicine are just a few of the program areas. VOCATIONAL-TECHNICAL PROGRAMS - Involves occupations in the fields of business, public service, technology, etc. An Associate of Arts degree or certificate is awarded upon completion of a program. Some transfer credits may apply to specific schools. APPRENTICESHIP INSTRUCTION PROGRAMS - Are designed to meet the needs of local industry for related trade instruction.
