1 Part B of the Teaching and Examination Regulations for the Master s degree programme in Theology and Religious Studies , 60 ECTS credits Section 1 - General provisions Article 1.1 Applicability of the Regulations These Regulations consist of two parts: A and B. This programme-specific part B belongs to part A of the Regulations containing general provisions pertaining to teaching and examinations for Master's degree programmes at the Faculty of Humanities, hereinafter referred to as: the Faculty. Part B contains programme-specific provisions for the programme in Theology and Religious Studies. Section 2 Structure of the degree programme Article 2.1 Study load a. The Master s degree programme carries 60 ECTS. b. The final examination for the Master s comprises the following compulsory components: 42 ECTS for the Master s courses; 18 ECTS for the Master s thesis. c. Section 4 specifies the courses for each programme and the corresponding study loads. Article 2.2 Mode of the degree programme The programme is offered on a full-time basis. Article 2.3 Elective study programme Subject to certain conditions, students have the option of compiling a cohesive curriculum of their own choice which deviates from the curricula outlined in Section 4 of these Regulations. The content of such a programme must be approved in advance by the Graduate School for Humanities Examinations Board. Section 3 Aim and exit qualifications Article 3.1 Aim of the degree programme The aim of the Master s is to equip students with the knowledge, skills and an understanding of the relevant discipline to enable them to perform independently and professionally at an advanced academic level and acquire the prerequisite competencies for admission to a doctoral programme. Article 3.2 Degree programme exit qualifications a. Academic ability A student who has completed the Master s: 1. is able to perform research in the humanities and to report on that research; 2. is able to explain various theoretical views of a subject in which he or she is specialised and to take his or her own position; 3. is able to both work independently and perform proficiently in a team; 4. is able to explain the key themes in contemporary discussions relating to his or her own specialisation(s) and to take his or her own position. 1

Subject-specific exit qualifications A student who has completed the Master s: 1. has a good understanding of the study programme and of the history of the discipline; 2. has a thorough knowledge of a specialism within the study programme or a thorough knowledge of the interface of the study programme and another discipline; 3. is skilled in independently detecting, formulating, analysing and proposing solutions to problems in the discipline. The student is also able to formulate targeted research questions and to present them in a research plan; 4. is skilled in finding, integrating and critically assessing relevant professional literature on specific subjects; 5. is skilled in conducting research in the field and reporting on the research in a manner that meets the generally accepted reporting standards in the discipline. Section 4a - Religion and Identity in the Modern World programme Article 4.a.1 Language of instruction a. The language of instruction used for the programme is Dutch. b. Contrary to the provision set out under a., a number of courses will be taught in English. This will be stated in the prospectus, where applicable. Article 4.a.2 Programme-specific entry requirements Bachelor's degree in Psychology, Social Sciences (Sociology, Political Science, Cultural Anthropology) and History; Bachelor's degree in the Humanities (other than in History and Religious Studies) or Law, provided that the student has obtained at least 24 ETCS in Religious Studies. 3 Religion and Film: Apocalypse Now or Never (12 ETCS) Subject to approval from the Graduate School for Humanities Examinations Board, Section 4b - Islam in the Modern World programme Article 4.b.1 Language of instruction a. The language of instruction used for the programme is Dutch. b. Contrary to the provision set out under a., a number of courses will be taught in English. This will be stated in the prospectus, where applicable. Article 4.b.2 Programme-specific entry requirements Bachelor s degree in Arabic Language and Culture; Bachelor s degree in Humanities, Social Sciences or Law, provided that the student has obtained at least 24 ECTS in the field of basic Islam studies. 4 Subject to approval from the Graduate School for Humanities Examinations Board, Section 4c - Religion and Cultural Heritage programme Article 4.c.1 Language of instruction The language of instruction used for the programme is English. Article 4.c.2 Programme-specific entry requirements Bachelor's degree in Cultural and Art Studies and History; Bachelor's degree in the Humanities (other than in Cultural and Art Studies and History), Social Sciences or Law, provided that the student has obtained at least 24 ECTS in Religious Studies. c. Students who are not native speakers of English must demonstrate when registering for the programme that their command of the English language is sufficient to enable them to successfully complete the Master s programme. The programme website explains how students should demonstrate that they are sufficiently proficient in English. d. Students holding a Bachelor s degree from one the following countries are not required to submit proof of a language test: United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. e. UvA students who have completed an Academic English course while pursuing a Bachelor s programme and were awarded a mark of 7.0 or higher are not required to submit proof of a language test. Section 4d - Western Esotericism programme Article 4.d.1 Language of instruction The language of instruction used for the programme is English. Article 4.d.2 Programme-specific entry requirements Bachelor's degree in Cultural and Art Studies and History; Bachelor's degree in the Humanities (other than in Cultural and Art Studies and History), Social Sciences or Law, provided that the student has obtained at least 24 ECTS in Religious Studies. c. Section 5 Amendments and effective date Article 5.1 Amendments to part B a. The dean shall establish amendments to part B of these Regulations by independent decision, having heard the programme committee and with due regard for the authority of the relevant advisory bodies. b. Amendments to part B of these Regulations do not apply to the current academic year unless they can be reasonably assumed not to damage the students interests. Any interim changes will be submitted to the programme committees and advisory bodies for the purpose of consultation or approval. Article 5.2 Effective date of part B Part B of these Regulations will take effect on 01 September Adopted by the dean of the Faculty on 16 September
