1 POSITION DESCRIPTION HASTINGS PUBLIC SCHOOLS SECTION I: GENERAL INFORMATION Position Title: Social Worker Immediate Supervisor s Position Title: Director of Special Education Job Summary: Department: Special Education FLSA Status: Eempt Bargaining Unit: Teacher Under the direction of the Director of Special Education, the Social Worker is responsible for providing assessment, direct intervention and classroom support for students who are eperiencing behavioral, emotional, social difficulties. SECTION II: ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Conducts behavioral management programming on a 1:1 basis and in groups for students with disruptive behaviors. Reviews and reinforces their progress. a) Consults with other instructional personnel, parents and outside professionals to coordinates services, referrals, and needed resources. b) Conducts crisis interventions with students in crisis situations. Assists students in developing action plans to help them manage through the crisis. Conducts assessments of students who may be ehibiting behavioral or emotional difficulties. Interviews teachers, support personnel, parents and students. Observes and monitors the behavior of students in classroom and school settings. Prepares and writes reports and recommendations including functional behavioral assessments and positive behavioral support plans. Consults with teachers, administrators and support personnel regarding both individual student issues and/or system/building issues. Provides information and advice to staff concerning addressing student issues and strategies for mental health issues, treatment and behavioral management individually, via or group presentations. Meets with and consults with parents and outside professional regarding student progress. Makes recommendations on referrals and serves as a liaison between parties. Attends various meetings and committees (e.g. staffing, child study team meetings, etc.) to assist in the evaluation and assessment of student needs, results, progress, referral needs or plans. Performs other duties of a comparable level or type, as required. a) Provides professional epertise and assistance to individuals, other district staff and the community concerning areas of instructional epertise/knowledge. b) Attends training sessions, conferences, seminars, district and departmental meetings. c) Keeps abreast of changing development and trends in area of assignment. 2 SECTION III: WORK REQUIREMENTS AND CHARACTERISTICS EDUCATION/KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENT: Minimum education required to perform adequately in position could reasonably be attained only by completing the following: REQUIRED EDUCATION/TRAINING (choose one) less than high school diploma High school diploma or GED. 1 year college 2 years college DEGREE INFORMATION: Type of degree: (B.S., M.A., etc.) Master s Degree Major field of study or degree emphasis: Social Work or related field/area. 3 years college 4 years college 1st year graduate level Essential knowledge and specialized subject knowledge required to perform the essential functions of the job: 2nd year graduate level Knowledge of individual and group counseling fundamentals, treatment strategies, principles and trends. Doctorate level Knowledge of district educational and administrative policies and procedures; Knowledge of assessment measures, procedures and relevant regulations pertaining to students with special needs or who are at-risk ; Knowledge of all laws, statutes, or guidelines pertaining to due process, data privacy or any other laws, rules or guidelines pertaining to the delivery or coordination of social service programs and responsibilities of the work. Knowledge of community resources, eligibility requirements and qualifications. Knowledge of juvenile court system, processes and procedures. Required Work Eperience in Addition to Formal Education/Training: Requires completion of assigned internship/practice teaching eperience as part of formal training and/or degree program. LICENSE/ CERTIFICATION Identify licenses/certification required: Licensed by State of MN in School Social Work. Page 2

3 ESSENTIAL SKILLS REQUIRED TO PERFORM THE WORK Skilled in: Skilled in facilitating conflict and problem resolution; Skilled in providing therapeutic personal, group counseling or crisis intervention counseling services to students with behavioral, emotional or social disorders. Skilled in communicating effectively on interpersonal and group levels; Skilled in the implementation of de-escalation techniques and methods Skilled in coordinating and monitoring student services and resources across the school, home, outside agencies or other community resources. Skilled in writing reports, assessments referrals, treatment plans, progress reports, social histories, and/or other materials/correspondence using and applying professional/technical concepts, principles and terminology. Dealing with, collaborating with and providing professional advice to parents, students, educational staff, administrators and representatives of outside agencies concerning the educational, social and emotional needs of students.
