Keys to Our House Quality Care Quality Living Ladysmith Care Community Ladysmith Nursing Home Ladysmith Living Center Legacy Senior Living Lake Manor Key Care Rockin With Rehab 2014 With the onset of a fully staffed therapy department since January 1 st, 2014, the Ladysmith Care Community is ready to take care of all of your aches and pains. However, it is not just your aches we handle in therapy, we do much more. With physical therapy (PT) and occupational therapy (OT) having certified lymphedema therapists, we can take care of the swelling in your arms and legs. Our physical therapists can care for your wound, treat your aching back and neck with mobilization to improve your alignment, and use myofascial release to reduce muscle tension. We can help you get your motion back after hip or knee surgery and work on your balance. Balance classes are being held every Thursday until July 24 th from 1-3PM. Those attending the sessions learn more than just exercise to help with their balance. Watch for announcements of future sessions. Speech therapy is also offered; with the help of our speech therapist you can improve your cognition as well as your speech and swallowing problems. Occupational therapy can help you stay independent at home, do home safety evaluation, and restore your arm strength and motion. We offer outpatient services and can get you in for therapy the same day. For more information call us at

Ladysmith Care Community Becomes a Certified Music and Memory Partner 100 nursing homes around the state have been certified to take part in a new project that uses personalized music to assist residents with Alzheimer s disease or related dementias through the Department of Health Services. The Wisconsin Music and Memory Initiative is part of a national program developed to train nursing home staff to create personalized music playlists for up to 15 residents diagnosed with Alzheimer s disease or related dementia. By listening to their favorite songs residents are able to recall memories that haven t been lost to their disease. This is an uplifting affect that improves their spirits and allows them to be responsive, cooperative, and engaged with family, friends, and staff. The Ladysmith Care Community has recently received certification of this personalized music program. Our certification ensures families that their loved ones will have access to the therapeutic benefits of personalized music and marks the facility s commitment to person-centered care. Extensive neuroscience research about how our brains respond to music has proven to enhance the lives of residents with Alzheimer s disease or other dementias by: *Providing a valuable tool for the effort to reduce use of anti-psychotic and anti-anxiety medications *Reducing agitation & sundowning *Enhancing engagement & socialization, in turn fostering a calmer environment *Increasing pleasure to persons with dementia, engaging in an enjoyable, fulfilling activity *Increasing cooperation & attention, reducing resistance to cares, a real boost to staff morale *Increasing fulfilling engagements among the residents, staff, family, friends & their community 15 residents of the Ladysmith Nursing Home have personal IPODS. Residents residing in the Meadow & Transitional households are included in the study. We are also expanding our program with families that have purchased personal IPODs for their loved ones. Mel & Arlaine Theilig moved to the Ladysmith Nursing Home in they were both original participants in the Ladysmith Nursing Home IPOD study. Both Mel and Arlaine responded amazingly well to their personalized music. Arlaine was the first resident that we saw life changing responses in. When she listened to her music she became more interactive, social, and conversant. Her demeanor was calmer, relaxed, and content. Her facial expressions were joyful as her attention was focused on the music that brought her peace. When staff saw how responsive Arlaine was to her IPOD, they became excited to see how other residents would respond to their personal IPODs.

Mel loves his IPOD. He is easy to engage because of his love for music. He has loved to sing all of his life and sang tenor in his church choir. Mel s son Mitch said One day I came to visit my Dad, and as I was walking up the hall toward his room, I heard him singing. He was listening to his IPOD. I was amazed at how in tune his voice sounded. I love to sing, Mel says with a huge, ear to ear, smile that lights up his face. His IPOD is filled with songs from the big band era, country western music, and his favorite, spiritual gospel. Mel is always smiling when he listens to his IPOD. He sings whole-heartedly, and it helps to redirect his thoughts if he becomes worried. Now with the Thielig s generous donation in memory of Arlaine, we will be able to purchase 6 facility IPODs for residents to enjoy. The results of the data from this statewide study are profound. The Wisconsin Music & Memory Initiative hopes to include another 150 nursing homes in The future goal is that every person in a nursing home will have their own personalized IPOD. Thank you to the Thieligs for seeing the benefits of this program and wanting to share and enhance the quality of life for our residents. For more information about the Wisconsin Music & Memory Initiative see Mel Theilig and his son Mitch sharing an IPOD.

Ladysmith Nursing Home and Lake Manor Staff Training June 17 th, 2014 Total Quality Management Continuous Quality Improvement Workshop On June 17th, 2014, twenty-two team members from Ladysmith Care Community completed a two-day interactive workshop on Total Quality Management and Continuous Quality Improvement. The spacious Cameo Room easily accommodated the employees as Administrator Cheryl Kelley led the sessions with assistance from Catherine Haupert, RN, Training and Development Coordinator. The workshops are held every six months and address many of the challenges facing long-term care providers and their response to these challenges. Some areas of focus include Resident Choice and Resident Directed Care in addition to Teamwork, Effective Communication Skills, Empowerment, Continuous Quality Improvement, and the Survey Process. Utilizing a total quality approach, we strive to exceed customer expectations while working toward the facility s Vision and Mission. Team members active participation assures that the workshops are interesting and fun as well as educational. Team members utilize problem-solving tools and processes while becoming familiar with quality management concepts. Certificates for completing the workshop are handed out at the Staff Recognition gathering in July. 5 Volunteer Spotlight: Ruth Burch Ruth Overhagen Burch was born in Glen Flora in a house covered with black tar paper. Her parents came from Vernon County. Ruth was 9 years old when her mother passed away giving birth to a son, leaving her father and younger sister. Times were difficult, but the family pulled together, with a strong, loving bond. Ruth s father valued education and he insisted that Ruth and her sister attend school beyond high school. He also wanted Ruth and her sister to take piano lessons. Ruth s mother was a teacher in Vernon County for 5 years before she married. Ruth s grandmother & grandfather were also teachers. Ruth graduated from Glen Flora High School and went on to attend Rusk County Normal School & became a teacher. Little did she realize that she would be teaching for the next 31 years. Ruth met her husband to be, Jim Burch, through a mutual friend, Helen Woodbury. They were married on Dec. 27, 1952, just 2 months before Jim was drafted for the Korean War. After Jim returned from the service in 1955, the couple was excited to begin farming. They rented a farm southwest of Sheldon in Taylor County for 3 years. It had an outdoor toilet and a dirt basement infested with snakes. Ruth has a dreadful fear of snakes and couldn t wait to move out! They purchased a farm in the Sheldon area, and lived there for 40 years. This was a wonderful place to raise a family and they raised 5 children: Mary Jo, Scott, Chris, Bob, and Jeff. Ruth continued to teach, while attending Mount Scenario College & earned her teaching degree in Jim was very involved in raising Registered Holsteins. He sold 2 young bulls to a buyer in Japan; they traveled there by airplane. They retired from farming in 1998 and built a home on a piece of their land that was on the Jump River. This was a wonderful retirement home filled with many happy memories of family gatherings. Their children with their families looked forward to coming home for hunting season, summer fishing vacations, and holidays. Their grandchildren spent many days in the Jump River building dams. Ruth now has 20 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. During their retirement years, Jim & Ruth enjoyed traveling. They traveled to Europe; Germany, Scotland, England, and the Netherlands. Jim, with Holstein cows in his heart, wanted to see the different breeds of cattle in Europe. We looked at a lot of cows, Ruth comments with a smile, in addition to other European sites. The couple also went to Hawaii, no cows there. In 2008, due to Jim s increased physical problems, they decided to sell their retirement home and moved into Flambeau Village Apartments. They moved on January 1 st, and by Halloween, Jim was admitted to the Ladysmith Nursing Home. Shortly after the Legacy Living apartments were built, Ruth moved in. She was the fourth tenant to reside in the new complex. I love it here; it s a nice place to be. The staff are all good people, and there are things going on here all of the time. Ruth has many interests that fill her day. She enjoys reading, music, and playing the piano. She has a strong Christian faith, attends Bible Study and chapel services. Ruth plays the piano for Pastors leading chapel services at the Ladysmith Care Community as needed. She also plays the piano for residents in the Meadow household (memory care) every week during a mealtime. Ruth has been a blessing to our residents and activity staff through her volunteer services. She has a kind heart and is always willing to help others whenever she can. Ruth at the piano

Resident of the Month: Ray Wetterling Raymond Henry Wetterling was born in Ladysmith, WI on June 28, 1939 to Grace Josephine Angell Wetterling and Emil Benjamin Wetterling. He was the ninth of eleven kids. In total, there were three brothers and seven sisters. His mother was a homemaker and showed her love to all of her children. His dad was a farmer and worked in the woods. Favorite memories that Ray had were playing outside no matter what the weather was. He also loved playing with his dog Bandit, bike riding, camping, ice skating, playing with his toy tractors and Tonka trucks, eating molasses cookies, and playing checkers. At fourteen, Ray stocked shelves and did dishes for the Colony Inn Restaurant in Amana, IA. After eleventh grade, Ray went to work in the Woolen Mill at Amana, IA. After that job, Ray joined the Navy for four and a half years and saw the world! He met his wife while walking down the street in Grinnell, IA at seventeen. He instantly knew that Sharon Lorraine Simbro was his special someone. They married on October 23, 1958, while he was on a fourteen day leave from the Navy. The couple proceeded to have seven children: Douglas Paul, Barry Michael, Melanie Rae, Timothy Kurt, Candace Lynn, Renae Anne, and Carrie Grace. The family enjoyed everything together including cookouts, camping, playing games, fishing, traveling, and basically just enjoying one another from day to day. This loving family has increased to include ten grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Ray has worked as an auto body restoration professional and a certified lumber grader. He has been to 47 of the 50 states. He enjoys music and long walks. Ray is versatile and knowledgeable with a great sense of humor.
