3 Page 3 Executive Summary UCL has been challenging and developing great minds since It is a world leading research intensive University covering a wide range of academic subjects that characterise a comprehensive university. The University is committed to ensuring that its academic activities accrue benefit to the greatest numbers in society. Enterprise is important to all universities, but resonates particularly with UCL. From UCL s inception, the institution has been enterprising, with a bold ambition to create a University dedicated to the greatest good for the greatest number. This principle has underpinned the evolution of modern-day UCL, a confident and enthusiastic community of enterprising educators, scholars and researchers, working together for the immediate, medium and long-term benefit of society. The University now seeks a Vice-Provost, Enterprise of the highest calibre who will succeed Professor Stephen Caddick who has led UCL s transformational enterprise agenda for the last five years and who will shortly take up his new post as Director of Innovations at the Wellcome Trust. UCL Enterprise works with all academic disciplines to promote Knowledge Exchange and to facilitate engagements with the wider world. Enterprise at UCL includes the following activities: education and training in entrepreneurship; social enterprise; corporate partnerships; industrially-related translational research; commercial research contracts; consultancy; continuing professional development; student businesses; commercialisation of intellectual property through spin out companies; and licensing and product development. Generating surplus to be reinvested in academic activity is a core objective but UCL takes a broad view of enterprise and values the wide range of activities listed above where they deliver benefit to society. UCL s Mission and enduring purpose is to be: London s Global University: a diverse intellectual community, engaged with the wider world and committed to changing it for the better; recognised for its radical and critical thinking and its widespread influence; with an outstanding ability to integrate its education, research, innovation and enterprise for the long-term benefit of humanity. Under the leadership of the Provost and President of UCL, Professor Michael Arthur, UCL has adopted an exciting and compelling vision for its future, UCL Implementation planning is in process and one of the early tasks of the new Vice-Provost will be to update and refresh the Enterprise Strategy in the light of UCL Reporting directly to the Provost and a member of the Provost s Senior Management Team, the Vice-Provost Enterprise will play a pivotal role in supporting this mission and fulfilling the University s ambitions for the future by delivering UCL s Enterprise agenda with the greatest economic and societal benefit. This is a highly visible role which requires an exceptional leader with experience of working in complex organisations. Whatever their background, whether from industry, research or academia, the successful candidate will be both entrepreneurial and commercial with the academic and professional credibility to command respect and confidence within and outside of UCL. This is a unique opportunity for a highly motivated and ambitious individual who will relish the opportunity of leading UCL Enterprise in the next exciting phase of its development. Initial interviews will take place in mid-june with UCL s Executive Search partners, Harvey Nash. Thereafter, the interview process will consist of a mix of formal and informal interviews with key people drawn from across the University concluding with a final interview in early July.
4 Page 4 About UCL University College London is ranked fifth in the 2014/15 QS International World Rankings. Our excellence extends across all academic disciplines, from one of Europe's largest and most productive hubs for biomedical science interacting with the leading London hospitals, to worldrenowned centres for architecture (UCL Bartlett) and fine art (UCL Slade School). UCL was founded in 1826 as a radical institution that was responsive to the needs of society. This ethos, that excellence should go hand-in-hand with enriching society, continues today. UCL was the first university in England to admit students regardless of religion, and the first to offer systematic education in important areas such as laws, modern foreign languages, engineering and medicine. UCL is in practice a university in its own right, although a member of the federal University of London. The Institute of Education recently merged with UCL and the University s turnover now exceeds 1.2 billion. The UCL Community UCL's staff and former students have included 29 Nobel prize winners, including the 2014 winner for Physiology or Medicine, Prof John O'Keefe. It has 983 Professors the highest number of any university in the UK and the best academic to student ratio of any UK university (The Times, 2013), enabling small class sizes and outstanding individual support. It is a truly international community: more than one-third of our student body - nearly 35,000 strong - come from 150 countries and nearly one-third of our staff are from outside the UK. UCL currently employs over 12,000 staff. UCL offers postgraduate research opportunities in all of its subjects, and provides about 200 undergraduate programmes and more than 400 taught postgraduate programmes in 11 faculties and more than 50 departments, from astronomy to zoology. Approximately 54% of the student community is engaged in graduate studies, with 29% of these graduate students pursuing research degrees. UCL is committed to the proposition that research intensive universities should be fully engaged with the world and seek to address global issues. UCL s focus on Global Challenges in research is complemented by its commitment to fostering Global Citizenship in its students. This commitment encompasses curriculum design, skills development, innovative learning and teaching, volunteering and preparation for a global employment market. Research UCL was rated the top university in the UK for research power (the overall quality of its submission multiplied by the number of FTE researchers submitted) in the Research Excellence Framework 2014 (REF2014). It was rated top not only in the overall results, but in each of the assessed components: publications and other research outputs; research environment; and research impact. REF2014 confirmed UCL s multidisciplinary research strength, with many leading performances across subject areas ranging from biomedicine, science and engineering and the built environment to laws, social sciences and arts and humanities. UCL is independently ranked as the most productive research university in Europe (SIR). The Thomson Scientific Citation Index - which catalogues journal articles and citations in the sciences, social sciences and arts and humanities shows that UCL is the second most-highly cited European university. Further information about UCL Research can be found here. Teaching and Learning at UCL UCL is committed to enhancing teaching and learning. Recent initiatives include the establishment of multi-disciplinary BASc programme, the establishment of a post-examination programme in Global Citizenship, and exploring the development of the use of Grade Point Averages in the UK. Future proposals include an all-programme review over the next two years, a review of the
5 Page 5 undergraduate curriculum, greater use of technology-enabled learning and new learning activities for students in all disciplines, exploring areas such as cultural difference, leadership and entrepreneurship. Further information about Teaching and Learning at UCL can be found here. Financial Position and Infrastructure UCL s turnover exceeds 1 billion per annum. Latest financial results show a continuation of improved financial performance with the University achieving a retained surplus of 18m or 2% of total income in This is the result of concerted effort to match academic excellence with financial sustainability, by increasing income and managing costs. Further information can be found here. Equality UCL is proud of its radical history with respect to equality and diversity. Fostering a diverse learning and working environment that cultivates authenticity and inclusion is crucial to innovation and therefore the University s success. UCL strives to maintain its pioneer status on diversity. Equality objectives are a key feature of the annual performance plans of each member of the Senior Management Team and individual executives are held to account for their achievement of their equality objectives by the UCL Council through the Provost. This approach is unique in the sector. Equality and diversity initiatives include tackling under-representation in the employment of black and minority ethnic (BME) support staff in grades 1-8 and to incrementally equalise the representation of men and women in senior grades, with the ultimate aim of a 50:50 split of women and men at this level. UCL is committed to the Athena SWAN Award scheme, seeking recognition for good employment practice for women in science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine in Higher Education to support the recruitment and retention of female students and staff. Further information about equalities and diversity at UCL can be found here.
