3 INTRODUCTION Creating Jobs and Building a Stronger Ontario In 2012/13, the Ontario government will be investing $2.4 billion to repair and expand provincial highways and bridges. This includes $1.87 billion for southern Ontario, creating more than 18,500 direct and indirect jobs. Improving Ontario's transportation network is part of the government s plan to strengthen the economy. Key highway investments planned between 2012 and 2016 include: constructing the Windsor Essex Parkway extending Highway 407 easterly widening Highway 401 express and collector lanes between the Highway 401/403/410 interchange and Hurontario Street in Mississauga building a new interchange at Highway 6 (Hanlon Expressway) and Laird Road in Guelph widening Highway 417 from Nicholas Street to Ottawa Road 174 in Ottawa 2012 Planned Accomplishments Southern Ontario New highway 102km New bridges 5 Highway rehabilitated 410km Bridges rehabilitated 79 Page 3

4 QUICK FACTS Ontario has 16,600 kilometres of provincial highway and 2,756 bridges. Ontario uses new technology and greener construction practices whenever possible, such as recycling existing pavement and using recycled and shredded tires for bridge embankment fill. Page 4

6 EXPANSION PROJECTS ONE Widening Highway 7/8 through Kitchener Construction crews have begun widening Highway 7/8 from four to six lanes between Fischer-Hallman Road and Courtland Avenue in west Kitchener. Expanding the highway for 6.5 km will ease congestion during rush hour as commuters head to and from west Kitchener neighbourhoods. Eleven bridges will be widened and repaired, and a new concrete median barrier will be built to separate eastbound and westbound lanes, keeping traffic flowing efficiently and safely. The work begins this year with repairs to the Fischer-Hallman Bridge. Work will move east in subsequent years, finishing in Page 6

11 TWO REHABILITATION PROJECTS Highway 401 in Toronto Gets a Facelift Highway 401 between Avenue Road and Bayview Avenue in Toronto carries about 400,000 vehicles per day. All express lanes, east and west bound, and six bridges are currently undergoing major rehabilitation. The six bridges include the Hogg s Hollow Bridge and the Yonge Street overpass. When repairs are complete, drivers will notice new pavement and see updated illumination, a new median and noise barriers. This project is one of several projects along Highway 401 through Toronto and is part of the Ministry of Transportation s strategic rehabilitation program for Highway 401 between Renforth Drive and Warden Avenue. 40 PROJECTS BEYOND 2016 THREE Page 40 THREE Projects Beyond 2016

41 THREE PROJECTS BEYOND 2016 Planning for the Future Ontario continuously looks at its long-term transportation infrastructure needs to determine where the greatest benefits can be realized for our economy and the lives of Ontarians. Planning beyond 2016 ensures our highways and bridges are built and maintained to support traffic levels and transportation needs for decades to come. Identified on the following pages are some projects in the planning stages that could support growth, improve traffic flow and increase safety in southern Ontario. These projects are still subject to further study and prioritization, and may be considered for future development. Page 41

46 COMPLETED PROJECTS 2011 FOUR In 2011, the Ontario government committed $1.36 billion to expand and repair southern Ontario highways and bridges. The following pages contain all major southern Ontario highway projects completed last year Southern Ontario Accomplishments New highways 62 km New bridges 5 Highways rehabiliated 562 km Bridges rehabiliated Page

47 FOUR COMPLETED PROJECTS 2011 Twinning Highway 7 near Carleton Place Highway 7 was widened from two lanes to four lanes west of Ottawa from Highway 417 to Carleton Place, a growing area in Eastern Ontario. Economic benefits of this widening include an increase in development and the number of businesses. The drive to downtown Ottawa has been shortened by 25 minutes and commuters can use HOV lanes and carpool. They can also use two new commuter parking lots at Dwyer Hill Road and Cemetery Road. Between Highway 417 and Carleton Place, 26 kilometres of highway was widened. An 8-kilometre stretch was paved using perpetual pavement. This type of pavement is tough enough to withstand serious stress for at least 50 years. If needed, in the future only the surface layer of the highway will be repaved saving time and money. Page 47
