1 Developing Your Resume 2014 WHAT IS A RESUME? A resume (or résumé) is a marketing document, approximately three pages long that provides a summary of your skills and abilities as observed through: Education Work experience (full time, part time & casual, paid & voluntary) Professional development Extra curricular activities Leisure interests A good resume should demonstrate how well your skills and abilities match the requirements of the advertised job. Some Useful Tips for a Good Resume Check for spelling and grammatical errors. Presentation and clarity are very important. Be honest; be able to explain/prove everything on your resume. Remember: your resume is often used as the basis for questions in an interview. Only use abbreviations that are widely understood (beware of technical jargon). Page breaks should not split lists, paragraphs, etc. Styles of Resumes Reverse Chronological Resume The most common and conservative form of presentation Arranges your experience and education in reverse chronological order (from most recent) Most suited to graduates for demonstrating growth and development in the required skills for the advertised position. Functional/Skills Based Resume This style of resume should highlight the skills most relevant to the current role for which you are applying Organises your Employment History into sub-headings to highlight the most relevant positions, rather than the most recent. Useful when you are seeking work in a different area to that of your most recent employment history. Online Applications Some organisations may require you to submit an online application. Consider starting the process early it can take time Complete responses offline, perhaps in Microsoft Word, and cut and paste once completed Use the spell checker and edit your work Tailor every application to the needs of each organisation. Try to find out how the organisation will search and select applications. Will they use keyword searches or a backend tool that scores responses (eg. Distinction results will score higher than passes and three years of part-time work will score higher than one year?) Warnings Remember also that: Forms may only be available whilst the organisation is actively recruiting Some companies only allow applicants a single sitting, so make sure you have everything ready when you complete the for The examples provided include general content and information. Your own resume must be tailored for each specific job application in a sequence to best showcase your own skills and experience.
