2 1. HISTORY History is all events which occurred in the past and can be remembered. Historians, people who study history, use historical sources to learn about history. A historical source is anything that provides us information about the past. Main historical sources are materials, written, graphic, oral and sound sources. By MACS and MBLS 2

4 2. HISTORICAL AGES A historical age is a long period of time between two important historical events. There are five historical ages: 1.- Prehistory is when the first humans made tools and ended with the invention of writing. 2.- Ancient history began with the invention of writing and ended with the fall of the Roman Empire. 3.- The Middle Ages began with the fall of the Roman Empire and ended with the discovery of America by the Spanish. 4.- The Modern Age began with the discovery of America by the Spanish and ended with the French Revolution. 5.- The Contemporary Age is the age that we live in now. PREHISTORY Prehistory is the period that begins with the appearance of the human being, about five million years ago, and finishes with the invention of writing, about 6,000 years ago. It is a long period divided into three stages: The Paleolithic Age, the Neolithic Age and the Metal Age. By MACS and MBLS 7

8 3. 1. PERIODS OF PREHISTORY THE PALEOLITHIC AGE The Palaeolithic age began when the first humans appeared and ended with the development of agriculture and livestock farming. THE NEOLITHIC AGE The Neolithic age began with the development of agriculture and livestock farming and ended with the invention of writing. THE BRONZE AGE The bronze age is a period beginning about 7,000 years ago, when human beings started to make objects out of metals. Prehistory is the period that begins with the appearance of the human being, about five million years ago, and finishes with the invention of writing, about 6,000 years ago. In Ancient History the first civilizations appeared: Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece and Rome. Roman civilization was very important. They dominated the Mediterranean sea. 13 5. Middle Ages The Middle Ages began after the fall of the Roman Empire in 476 AD and ended in 1492 with the discovery of America. People lived in kingdoms governed by a monarch. ABOUT CHRISTOPHER COLOMBUS Occupation: Explorer Born: 1451 in Genoa, Italy Died: May 20, 1506 Best known for: Discovering America Biography: Christopher Columbus is the explorer who is credited for discovering America. Of course, there were already people living in America at the time who we call Native Americans. There even was a European, Leif Ericsson, who had been to the America before. However, it was Columbus' voyage that started the exploration and colonization of the Americas. Before the Voyage Columbus was born in Genoa, Italy in He later lived in Lisbon where he worked as a trader. He learned how to make maps and navigate a ship. A long Voyage He set sail on August 12, 1492 with three ships named the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria.
