3 The International Institute of Refrigeration ITS OBJECTIVES At the 1st International Congress of Refrigeration (Pans, 1908) it was decided to bring into being an International Association of Refrigeration and the great Dutch physicist KAMERLINGH ONNES admirably defined its purpose as follows: ''reunir toutes les intelligences qui s'interessent aux basses temperatures''. Founded in January 1909, the International Association of Refrigeration became in 1920 the International Institute of Refrigeration (I. I. R.) now numbering nearly 50 Member-Countries in all parts of the world covering 65% of its land surface. The purpose of this Institute is to further the world wide development of scientific research, the teaching and popularization of science and technology and the development of the uses of refrigeration particularly in the field of food and agriculture, in industry and in the field of human health and hygiene. ITS FUNCTION An intergovernmental Organisation The International Institute of Refrigeration is governed by an International Agreement. It is run under the high administrative authority of a General Conference and an Executive Committee whose members are the official delegates of the Member-Countries. Scientific Council and technical Commissions A Scientific Council coordinates the technical and scientific activity of 10 Commissions. These Commissions bring together eminent scientists, technicians and professional men who mutually interchange the results of their studies and research work in the field of refrigeration. The Commissions express their opinions and suggest proposals concerning the problems put before them. They meet in principle once a year. Their terms of reference are defined as follows: Commission I Commission II Commission III Commission IV : Cryophysics and cryoengineering. : Heat and mass trasfer. : Refrigerating machinery. : Refrigeration of perishable produce. Commission V : Cold storage facilities. Commission VI : Air conditioning. Commission Commission Commission IX VII : Refrigerated land transport. VIII: Refrigerated sea transport. : Applications of refrigeration to chemical, civil and industrial engineering. Commission X : Cryobiology and freeze-drying. International Congresses of Refrigeration Every four years, all the Commissions meet in an International Congress, open to all specialists in refrigeration. The last Congresses were held in London (1951), Paris (1955), Copenhagen (1959), Munich (1963), Madrid (1967). The Xlllth Congress will be held in Washington in 1971.

6 L'Institut International du Froid SA RAISON D'ETRE Sa creation fut décidée au l^^ Congrés International du Froid (Paris, 1908) et le grand physicien hollandais KAMERLINGH ONNES en définit admirablement le cadre : «reunir toutes les intelligences qui s'interessent aux basses temperatures». Créée en Janvier 1909, Γ Association Internationale du Froid se transforma en 1920 en Institut International du Froid (I.I.F.) qui compte aujourd'hui pres de 50 Pays Membres, dans toutes les parties du monde, couvrant au total 65 % de la surface du globe. La mission de ΓΙ. I. F. est de favoriser dans tous les pays les recherches, l'enseignement, la vulgarisation dans les sciences et les techniques du froid et le développement des applications du froid, notamment dans le domaine agricole et alimentaire, dans Tindustrie, et pour l'hygiéne et la santé de Fhomme. SES MÉTHODES DE TRAVAIL Une Organisation intergouvernementale L'Institut International du Froid est un Organisme intergouvernemental, régi par une Convention Internationale. II est place sous la haute autorité administrative d'une Conference Genérale et d'un Comité Exécutif qui comprend les delegues officiels des Pays Membres. Un Conseíl Scientifique et des Commissions scientifíques et teclmiques Un Conseil Scientifique coordonne Facti vité scientifique et technique des 10 Commissions. Celles-ci groupent d'éminents savants, techniciens et professionnels du froid du monde entier qui confrontent leurs etudes, leurs experiences, le résultat de leurs travaux. Les Commissions font connaitre leurs avis et leurs propositions sur les problémes qui leur sont poses. Chacune se réunit en principe une fois par an. Leurs domaines sont ainsi définis : Commission I : Cryophysique et cryogénie. Commission If : Transfert de chaleur et de masse. Commission III : Machines frigorifiques. Commission IV : Le froid applique au produits périssables. Commision V : Entreposage frigorifique. Commission VI : Conditionnement d'air. Commission VII :Transports frigorifiques terrestres. Commission VIII: Transports frigorifiques maritimes. Commission IX : Applications du froid au génie chimique, civil et industrie!. Commission X : Cryobiologie et lyophilisation. Des Congrés Internationaux du Froid Tous les quatre ans, Tensemble des Commissions se réunit en un Congrés International, ouvert á tous les spécialistes du froid. Les derniers Congrés se sont tenus á Londres (1951), París (1955), Copenhague (1959), Munich (1963), Madrid (1967). Le XIII«Congrés se tiendra á Washington (U.S.A.) en 1971.

7 SERVICES Publications The BULLETIN of the I.I.R. is published bi-monthly, each issue in English and French. Each issue (about 300 pages) publishes original studies and summarizes most of the articles concerned with refrigeration which have appeared in the scientific and technical reviews published in all countries. In addition, the BULLETIN keeps readers informed of current research in refrigeration all over the world. It also reviews books published and gives information on Congresses and meetings of relevant interest. The BULLETIN provides an indispensable service for all those interested in the many aspects of refrigeration, research workers, teachers, technicians, industrials. It gives information on government departments, research centres, schools, national and trade associations concerned with refrigeration. The BULLETIN is, in efí'ect, a compact and well-collated technical reference guide. The Proceedings of the meetings of Commissions and Congresses with the text of the papers presented and discussed, constitute a unique documentation concerning all modern problems in the field of refrigeration. Numerous publications give information on diff'erent subjects. Recent examples are: catalogue of films on refrigeration; International Dictionary of Refrigeration, in 6 languages; Bibliographic Guides to Refrigeration (more than references). Between 1956 and 1967, the International Institute of Refrigeration has published nearly 50,000 pages of printed documents. International recommendations The 1.1. R. publishes international recommendations resulting from the work of its Commissions and its Scientific Council for the use of other international Organizations, of Governments or of Professional Associations. Recent examples are: conditions for the cold storage of perishable produce; conditions for the refrigerated transport of perishable foodstuffs; processing and handling of frozen foods; testing code for refrigerating machinery; testing of refrigerated vehicles. Documentation at the Central Office of the Institute Thousands of books, reports, proceedings of Congresses and the collection of reviews form a specialized documentation which is unique in the world; it is constantly being expanded and brought up to date. The Central Office of the Institute provides photocopies and microfilms, diagrammes and graphs and undertakes bibliographic search.

8 LES SERVICES RENDUS Des publications Le BULLETIN de IT.I.F. parait tous les deux mois, en frangais et en anglais. Chaqué numero (environ 300 pages) publie des etudes originales, analyse les articles interessant le froid parus dans la littérature scientifique et technique de tous les pays. En outre il informe sur les recherches poursuivies dans le domaine du froid, par les laboratoires du monde entier. II sígnale les livres parus. II renseigne sur les congrés et joumées d'etudes qui se tiennent dans le monde. Pour tous ceux qui s'intéressent au froid chercheurs, professeurs, techniciens, industriéis le BULLETIN de l'i.i.f. constitue un moyen de travail indispensable. II donne d'utiles renseignements sur les services officiels, les centres de recherche, les écoles, les associations nationales et les groupements professionnels qui s'intéressent au froid dans chaqué pays. Les Comptes rendus des reunions de Commissions et des Congrés, avec le texte des rapports presentes et des discussions, contituent une documentation unique sur tous les problémes d'actualité dans le domaine du froid. Des publications diverses apportent des informations tres variées. Quelques exemples récents : un catalogue des films dans le domaine du froid; le Dictionnaire International du Froid, en 6 langues; les Guides Bibliographiques du Froid (plus de references). Entre 1956 et 1967, l'institut International du Froid a publié prés de pages imprimées de documents. Des recommandations internationales L'I.I.F. publie des recommandations internationales, résultat des travaux de ses Commissions et de son Conseil Scientifique, utilisables pard'autres Organisations internationales, par des Gouvernements ou par des Associations professionnelles. Quelques exemples récents : conditions d'entreposage frigorifique des produits périssables; conditions de transport frigorifique des denrées périssables; preparation et distribution des aliments congeles; essais de materiel frigorifique; essais de véhicules frigorifiques. Une documentation au siege de Tlnstitut Des milliers de livres, rapports, comptes rendus de Congrés, collections de revues, constituent au siege de l'i.i.f. une documentation specialisée unique au monde et qui s'enrichit sans cesse. La direction de l'institut fournit photocopies et microfilms, ainsi que diagrammes et abaques et efíectue des recherches bibliographiques.

You have to keep abreast of current research in refrigeration in various countries and the latest technical books published: you will find everything in the Bulletin of the I.I.R. You need also to know the latest in refrigeration news, the opinions of the best international experts on your problems: all this you will find in the reports of the meetings of the Commissions and the various I.I.R. publications. 13 FOREWORD Two Bibliographic Guides to Refrigeration have so far been published by the Internationa] Institute of Refrigeration: one covering the period and the second was for We are now presenting a third Guide consisting of bibliographic references to all the documents abstracted in the International Institute of Refrigeration Bulletin during che period All these references (totalling nearly 7,000 reports, articles and communications) are classified according to subjects, similar in lay-out to the first two editions. These references are followed by a Usting of books received at our library during the same period, The index of contents has been especially developed to facilitate the use of the Guide. We hope that we may once again be able to assist all those engaged in bibliographic research researchers or engineers, manufacturers or operators who are in either constant or occasional contact with the refrigeration domain. This third guide will be the last of its series. With effect from 1969, the Institute will be presenting an indexing of each abstract in its Bulletin by keywords formed out of a "thesaurus" or "glossary of key-words". Index-contents will be pubushed every year, replacing both the Bibliographic Guide and the annual table of contents of the Bulletin. 14 AVANT-PROPOS L'Institut International du Froid a publié jusqu'ici deux Guides Bibliographiques du Froid, le premier couvrant les années 1953 á 1960, le second la période Nous présentons maintenant notre troisiéme Guide constitué par les references bibliographiques de tous les documents analyses dans le Bulletin de I'lnstitut International du Froid pendant la période L'ensemble des references (prés de rapports, articles et communications) est classé par sujets, suivant un plan dont les principales divisions sont semblables á celles des deux premiers tomes. Ces references sont complétées par Celles qui se rapportent aux ouvrages de librairie entres de 1965 á 1968 dans la bibliothéque del'i.i.f. L'index des matiéres a été largement développé pour faciliter au maximum Tutilisation du Guide. Nous espérons ainsi, une fois encore, aider dans leurs recherches bibuographiques tous ceux chercheurs ou Ingenieurs, constructeurs ou exploitants qui travaillent constamment ou accessoirement dans le domaine du froid. Ce troisiéme guide bibliographique sera le dernier de la serie. Ä partir de 1969, en eñet, I'lnstitut a decide d'indexer chaqué resume presenté dans son Bulletin par des mots-clés sur la base d'un «thesaurus» ou «lexique mots-clés» : Chaqué année, des index-matiéres seront pubhés, ils remplaceront á la fois le Guide Bibliographique et les tables des matiéres annuelles du Bulletin.
