1 HMS Lab Introduction to Early Childhood Education Fall 2011 Instructors: Louann Williams Phone: (936) Toddler I classroom: 106 Office: 106A Office Hours: TWRF 1:00-2:00 Course Description: Introduction to the profession of early childhood focusing on developmentally appropriate practices, interaction with young children, and developmentally appropriate activities. Course Objectives: 1. NCATE COURSE OBJECTIVES: Standard 1- Promoting Child Development and Learning 1 a. The candidate knows and understands young children s characteristics and needs. 1 b. The candidate knows and understands the multiple influences on development and training. 1 c. The candidate uses developmental knowledge to create healthy, Specific Course Objectives: respectful, supportive, and challenging learning environments. Upon completion of the course, the successful student will: 1. Understand developmentally appropriate practices. 2. Be able to identify developmentally appropriate activities which promote learning. 3. Be able to define short and long term objectives and goals for child guidance. 4. Be able to identify stages and characteristics of early childhood physical development. 5. Knows appropriate interaction strategies and techniques which demonstrates positive communication with others.

2 Course Requirements: HMS 241 lab lecture class meets 1-50 minute period each week for approximately 15 weeks. In addition to that, each student/teacher candidate will complete 15.5 hours of classroom observation for 12 weeks to make a total of 30.5 hours for both lab lecture and observation combined. Professionalism: Attend all class meetings in accordance with the university policies. Read course outline-syllabus and follow directions for assignments. Arrive before class begins (late arrivals will be documented and penalized.) Turn off cell phones before entering lecture or lab classrooms. Complete assignments and participate intelligently in class discussions. Dress professionally and be professional in demeanor and attitude. Remain confidential at all times. Professionalism Work Policies The decision whether to accept make-up work is at the discretion of the instructor. Documentation must be provided to the instructor in order to turn in missed/late work. In general, make-up work will be accepted one week from the original due date. No make-up work will be accepted after dead week. All assignments must be typed in Century Gothic. Multiple pages must be stapled before coming to class. Loose or clipped paperwork will not be accepted. Name tags While in the ECRC building, name tags must be worn at ALL times. This includes both observation and lecture. Students/teacher candidates not wearing the appropriate name badges will be asked to leave the building. You will be issued a name tag by your 241 lab teacher in which you will place your student identification. Name tags must be returned at the end of the semester. If the tag is lost, there will be a 2.00 charge. Interaction/Observations: 100 pts. Students/teacher candidates will interact on a weekly basis with the children in the classroom in which they are assigned. Fifteen and a half (15. 5) hours of observation will be clocked throughout the semester. Students/teacher candidates are expected to observe and interact with the children in a meaningful and appropriate manner. All fifteen and half (15.5) hours of observation must be completed by dead week. A withheld may be given in certain circumstance.

3 In the event a student/teacher candidate is unable to observe during his/her scheduled time, the lab instructor must be notified before the observation time. Candidates may contact the lab instructor via . Observation cards will be checked weekly and points will be deducted if observations are not done on a weekly basis unless pervious arrangements have been made with the instructor. Handwriting Students/teacher candidates will practice their printing skills by utilizing a handwriting website and candidates will be responsible for printing by hand the titles on all five (5) song cards. A handwriting assignment will be given in class. Assignment #1: Students/teacher candidates will observe and record five (5) developmental characteristics of toddlers regarding their social/emotional skills and five (5) language skills. Assignment #2: 25 Pts. Students/teacher candidates will observe and record five (5) developmental characteristics of toddlers regarding their physical skills and five (5) cognitive skills. Song Card Files: 50 pts. Students/teacher candidates will construct five (5) song cards to begin their song card file. One of the songs cards will be used along with the outdoor LCA (learning center activity). Picture card File: 20 pts. Student/teacher candidates will construct two (2) picture cards to be used in their outdoor LCA (learning center activity). Outdoor play set-up (learning Center activity): 100 pts. Students/teacher candidates will work in groups of three (3) to set up one outdoor learning center activity (LCA). Students/teacher candidates assigned to Toddler I will set up on that playground. Students/teacher candidates assigned to Toddler II will set up on the Toddler II playground. Activities will follow the guidelines and criteria outlines by the lab course instructor. Candidates will sign up for this activity.

4 Outdoor LCA plans (learning center activity): Students/teacher candidates will submit an outdoor learning center activity plan to the instructor prior to the set-up in the classroom. Outdoor LCA reflection (learning center activity): Students/teacher candidates will submit a refection after the outdoor learning center activity is completed. The reflection will be due the following week after completing the outdoor learning center activity. Case Study: 120 pts. Students/teacher candidates will be responsible for working on and completing a case study on one (1) child that will be assigned to them. This will be done during the seventeen and a half (17.5) hours of observation. The lab instructor will assign each student/teacher candidate a child from their assigned classroom. Final: 100 pts. There will be a comprehensive final given at the end of the semester (normally given during dead week). Grading: Grades will be assigned according to the total number of points earned. Candidates will not receive a final course grade until all assignments are completed and submitted to the instructor. This also includes completing observation hours. Grades are determined by dividing the total earned by the total number of possible points.
