GM&T ISSUE 3 WELCOME INSIDE 4/5 Pipeline The latest news from GM&T and beyond How do you continue to power your business while complying with laws on carbon emissions? Welcome to the new-look GM&T magazine. We ve relaunched the magazine to bring you more features, more opinion and a greater insight into how we work with our customers and counterparties to meet your energy needs. In many ways, whether it s gas to cook meals in a restaurant or electricity to light a factory floor, the needs of energy consumers are the same as they were a century ago, but the way we source and consume energy is constantly evolving. Take the UK. The nation can no longer rely on the North Sea for its gas, so it s broadening its horizons to secure supply for the years ahead, strengthening links with gas markets in Continental Europe and shipping LNG from countries around the world (page 10). And then there s the ever-changing environmental landscape. How do you continue to power your business while complying with laws on carbon emissions especially when these laws are subject to change? There s no single solution, but as this issue demonstrates, carbon transactions (page 6), smart metering (page 9) and clean technology (page 18) can all help us consume energy in an environmentally friendly way. Whatever your energy interests and needs, I hope you enjoy reading our new-look magazine. 3 JON FEINGOLD, MANAGING DIRECTOR, GM&T RETAIL FIRST WORD GM&T Retail is in a unique position within the Gazprom Group. As the Group s global front-facing division, selling to end users in the liberalised SME, commercial and industrial markets, GM&T Retail is the only company selling in the sole name of Gazprom to end users. This gives us a great opportunity to create and develop the Gazprom brand and it s an opportunity we ve seized. Our customers include some of the UK s largest hospitals, universities, cinemas and football clubs. If you watch a movie in an Odeon cinema or watch Manchester United play at Old Trafford, you ll be entertained by a business that s powered by GM&T Retail. And we ve extended our offering beyond Britain, with our dedicated team of 80 people serving not only our UK customers but end users in Ireland and France as well. We keep expanding the range of products and services we offer to our clients, too. We sell a suite of products including gas, power and carbon and also offer smart meters and energy management services to all end users. Our offering has seen us enjoy steady growth since we were established in 2006 and we intend to continue that growth. We plan to expand into Europe, concentrating on Benelux an ambition well supported by both the strong Gazprom brand and opportunities offered by Europe s deregulated markets. We also intend to further develop our energy services to become our customers partner in energy management. We ve recently installed the first smart meters in France, marking the beginning of our AMR presence in Europe. Moreover, we re discussing the possibility of developing our products and services with companies in Russia, Europe and Asia, paving the way for us to enter the global arena. Last but not least, GM&T Retail is the final link in a full gas chain for the Gazprom Group, stretching from production fields in Russia to end users in Europe. So, we re well positioned to achieve our goal of creating a brand that global end users will see as their supplier of choice. We intend to further develop our energy services to become our customers partner in energy management

INDUSTRY NEWS FROM GM&T Pipeline Power player Steve Armitage has joined GM&T as our new Head of Retail Power. Steve will talk about the challenges facing the power sector in the next issue. For more information on Power go to Eyeing the future What s going to happen to the carbon market after 2012? That was the question on everyone s lips at Carbon Expo 2010, which took place in Cologne in Germany during May. There was a lot of talk about the future of CDM (Clean Development Mechanism) and JI (Joint Implementation) post-2012 and whether they will continue, said Julia Elmgren, Project Manager, Carbon for GM&T. Everyone agreed that CDM will continue but didn t know for which countries. For instance, will the US accept CDM projects? GM&T s Regional Manager and Carbon Originator, Tatiana Fayzullina, gave a presentation on CDM and JI at the Expo. GM&T also exhibited at the event, attended by 3,000 people from 110 countries. Julia said: It gave us a great opportunity to chat to counterparties about market trends. Natural progression It has been a momentous year for Gazprom Global LNG (GGLNG). The business was accepted as an Associate Member of SIGTTO (Society of International Gas Tanker and Terminal Operators), which promotes best practice in gas tankers and terminals worldwide. GGLNG also signed a worldwide multi-service agreement with Gulf Agency Company (GAC). The deal will see GGLNG benefit from GAC s suite of services for the oil and gas industry. GGLNG Shipping, meanwhile, has received approval from Lloyd s Register Quality Assurance that its Quality Management System complies with the ISO 9001:2008 requirement. And earlier this year, GGLNG achieved a major milestone when the LNG carrier Grand Aniva made the 100th LNG cargo delivery from the Sakhalin-2 Project in Russia. It s a date Don t miss the European Gas Conference The event, in its fourth year, will take place in Vienna on January. 5 TruRead (now Gazprom Global Energy Solutions) grew its Automated Meter Reading (AMR) installations from 100 to 1,000 a month between March 2008 and May The global carbon market grew to 94 billion in 2009 despite financial and economic turmoil, according to the World Bank. The Confederation of British Industry (CBI) has forecast the UK economy will have expanded by 1.3 per cent in GAZOMETER Eastern promise GM&T has increased its presence in the Asia Pacific region with the launch of its Singapore subsidiary. The aim is to extend GM&T s existing offering in this region, which is one of the major global hubs in commodities trading. Initially, the business will focus on global LNG shipping and trading, portfolio development and carbon-credit origination projects. Arthur Tait, Managing Director of GM&T Singapore, said: Our existing expertise in LNG and carbon trading has given us a strong foundation with which to build our operations in Asia Pacific. GM&T has already completed a number of spot-trading deals for LNG delivery into Japan, Korea, China and Taiwan. The ups and downs of the energy sector The UK s natural gas production was nine per cent lower in the first quarter of 2010 compared to the previous year, according to the Department of Energy and Climate Change. Two new gas power plants due to be built by E.ON and Scottish and Southern Energy in Britain have been put on hold because industrial power demand has not returned after the recession. Formula One has unveiled plans to reduce carbon emissions by 15 per cent across the motorsport over the next three years. GM&T ISSUE 3 5

CUSTOMER PROFILE ARDAGH GLASS You may not have heard of Ardagh Glass, but chances are you have drunk out of one of its bottles. The company is one of Europe s largest glass packaging manufacturers, producing more than 13 billion glass containers a year for world-famous food and drink brands such as Nestle, Heineken and Coca-Cola. The company operates 20 glass production sites with 40 furnaces in eight countries across Europe including England and Scotland, and employs more than 6,500 staff. Like most organisations, Ardagh is under pressure to reduce its environment impact but this is not an easy task. In order to satisfy huge demand from its customers, it has to operate its plants round the clock, so continuous energy supply is essential to business continuity. Our production process is energy intensive by definition so it s a challenge to balance commercial necessity with our important obligation of reducing our footprint, says Steffen Seehausen, Physical Risk Manager for Ardagh, who s based in Germany. Required melting temperatures for our furnaces require high-energy density of fuel, therefore potential for full substitution to regenerative fuels is limited. However, we are investigating the feasibility of regenerative fuels and more eco-friendly solutions as part of our ongoing programme to examine ways of reducing our impact. Energy exchange The programme has already seen Ardagh reduce its environmental impact through carbon-reduction projects. A recent success was the construction of an energy exchange at the company s Limmared site in Sweden. The site s Factory Maintenance Manager, Kenneth Johansson, says: It harnesses waste heat from our furnaces to provide hot water for a local community and can supply up to 100 per cent of their heating requirements at a substantially reduced cost. This huge project involved the laying of nearly 50km of piping and now supplies over 5,000 people. The energy exchange was made possible thanks to help from GM&T. Carbon transaction Following the success of the GM&T Retail s retail gas team in securing a gas supply contract to a number of Ardagh s UK sites, Simon Watson, Retail Carbon Negotiator, held a meeting back in July 2009 with members of the senior management team at Ardagh to discuss and highlight the opportunities available from the European Union Emission Glass act Thanks to carbon trading, Ardagh Glass has reduced its environmental impact while increasing revenues It s a challenge to balance commercial necessity with our important obligation of reducing our footprint Steffen Seehausen, Physical Risk Manager, Ardagh Glass 6 GM&T ISSUE 3

Trading System (EU ETS) carbon allocation. This was followed up with a meeting at Ardagh s Dublin HQ later in the year, in which we identified the potential for Ardagh to extract value from carbon transactions which would allow them to further invest in energy-saving projects. Following the success of these meetings, Ardagh and GM&T Retail agreed a contract, as well as agreeing to explore the most efficient method to transact carbon credits to the benefit of all parties. Due to the complexity and risks associated with the potential transactions, GM&T Retail invited GM&T to become involved and this internal teamwork proved successful. We created a unique, structured forward transaction for carbon which offered Ardagh maximum value and minimum risk, says Simon. We have concluded a number of significant transactions with Ardagh which have brought additional benefits, and which we are now building on as we continue to strengthen our partnership. We will continue working together to help Ardagh become carbon neutral, creating a competitive advantage for them in the highly competitive glass market. This is a positive relationship for both parties. Although Ardagh has been implementing energy efficiency programmes for more than 60 years, carbon trading was new territory for the manufacturer. Karen Butler,Group Financial Controller for Ardagh, says: It was a relatively new concept for our business, but we realised that carbon trading would be essential for us going forward. Our initial deal, with the help of GM&T, simplified the whole process. What s more, the deal not only made the exchange possible but generated around 6.5 million in revenue for Ardagh. A flexible approach helped make the transaction a reality, with GM&T allowing the deal to take place over a number of individual transactions. Close communication between both parties was also key, with GM&T s Global Carbon team regularly updating Ardagh on progress and visiting the customer s Dublin HQ to discuss the deal face to face. It s clear the partnership is already helping Ardagh to shrink its carbon footprint without compromising manufacturing output something well worth raising a glass to. GM&T offers a wide range of carbon products. For more information call Maciek Stefanski, Regional Manager, Global Carbon on or Simon Watson on , or go to We realised that carbon trading would be essential for us going forward After Kyoto Uncertainty in the carbon market means companies like Ardagh Glass need help to purchase the right products Whereas the glass-packaging sector is a relatively sturdy market in which huge swings in demand are rare, the carbon market is less settled. The market is currently stagnating, due to uncertainty about what s going to happen post What comes after Kyoto? Will there be new climatechange legislation and what impact will it have? For companies like Ardagh Glass, this uncertainty makes purchasing carbon products a tricky business and means that GM&T has to provide innovative products and deals to their customers. In some ways carbon compliance is straightforward as it s a single, quoted market across the whole of Europe and its price is transparent, which means that all of Ardagh s installations are in a similar position, says GM&T s Maciek Stefanski. The uncertainty within the carbon world about what will happen post-2012, however, is the biggest challenge, so it s important that GM&T provides our customers with the right carbon strategy and products, helping them to respond to any developments. As part of this, GM&T Global Carbon is closely monitoring the progress of the Copenhagen Accord as it evolves into a legally binding treaty. GM&T is involved in originating and developing emission reduction projects across multiple sectors, guiding customers and counterparties through various schemes. 8 GM&T ISSUE 3

Page GM&T header RETAIL Perspectives Alan Jones looks at how the UK Government s new legislation on smart metering will affect energy consumers Smart move The UK stands on the brink of one of the biggest changes to affect the energy market since British Gas converted all the nation s homes to natural gas in the 1970s. It is a change that will affect every energy consumer. The plan is for all UK homes to have smart meters by 2020 and with the new Government this date could end up being earlier. Smart meters are intended to help the Government meet its greenhouse gas reduction targets of at least 34 per cent by 2020 by providing key price signals, while at the same time enabling consumers to sell locally generated energy back to the grid. A key part of the justification for smart metering is the link to smart grid technology and demand-side management. These benefits will become particularly strong if the trend in energy prices increase fourfold over the next 10 years, as some analysts now predict. Unlike electricity, gas cannot be generated from wind and solar by the consumer but it can be stored. As a consequence, many of the benefits declared for domestic electricity smart meters and smart grid technology do not apply to gas. Much of the debate has focused on the domestic benefits of Smart technology. When looking at gas in particular in relation to larger consumers the issues and benefits are very different. Ahead of the mass domestic rollout, large consumers are already using Smart technology (more generally called AMR or automated meter reading). When linked to the internet, such technology provides a powerful solution to accessing accurate data on daily flow and load profile consumption. This high-resolution data enables a business to better understand consumption and manage energy costs. And better data is crucial in a volatile and dynamic energy market. At the same time, businesses are subject to increasing legislative requirements and environmental pressures. Carbon reduction One such piece of legislation is the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme (formerly known as the Carbon Reduction Commitment), a new Government-backed carbon emissions trading scheme which came into effect on 1 April. The CRC is a mandatory climate change and energy-saving scheme in the UK. Organisations that use a certain amount of electricity will be obliged to participate in the scheme and monitor their emissions. They will have to buy allowances from the Government for each tonne of CO2 they emit, which will create a significant incentive for organisations to reduce their emissions and in turn save money by not wasting energy. At the moment only larger businesses are affected by the CRC. However, as energy becomes more expensive and the drive to reduce emissions intensifies, the net will spread wider with more smaller businesses affected. Only with AMR can a business be in control of the true facts about its energy consumption. Therefore acting sooner will provide valuable experience and information for when all businesses are affected by the legislation. 11 When extremely cold weather threatened to disrupt gas supply to the UK earlier this year, it provoked hysteria in some parts of the British media. While reports predicting that supplies might run out were wide of the mark, the panic highlighted uncertainty over the future of UK gas supply. The UK needs to recognise it s no longer an island when it comes to energy supply, says Alex Barnes, GM&T s Head of Regulatory Affairs. Not so long ago it was self-sufficient in gas from the North Sea, but as UK Continental Shelf (UKCS) reserves decline that s no longer the case. The UK is increasingly dependent on gas imports. The key to securing supply is diversification. It s about making sure you don t put all your eggs in one basket. The UK is still able to access gas from number of sources. These sources include gas from Norway and continental Europe (and ultimately Russia) via pipelines. Another growing source is LNG. Prior to 2005 the UK had no way of importing LNG, says Alex. Now it can access LNG via ships from all over the world. Greater exposure to wider markets, however, complicates matters. Alex explains: Now gas markets are interconnected through pipelines and LNG, the UK can no longer rely on future supplies coming its way. Also, the price it pays for gas will increasingly depend on what s happening globally. Just as global oil prices were affected by the explosion of demand in China, LNG and gas prices in the UK are impacted by what is happening elsewhere in the world. LNG will flow to the most attractive market. The best ways to guarantee affordable gas supply is to ensure markets work efficiently. After all, the definition of a market is where supply and demand match. There are signs that a European gas market is becoming a reality which is good news for the UK, reckons Alex. Creating an EU-wide market, where gas can move freely between countries to wherever it s needed most, will spread risk across EU countries. Effective regulation Governments have a big part to play in creating effective markets. In Europe, the EU is implementing the Third Energy Package aimed at making markets work better, and is developing security of supply legislation. Meanwhile the UK government has announced plans for an energy bill which will reform markets to ensure security of supply and fair competition. Alex welcomes the news with cautious optimism: The UK s new Coalition Government has stated it will instruct Ofgem to establish a security guarantee for energy suppliers, but the devil is in the detail. 12 Policy makers must recognise the need to create a framework which allows long-term investments, long-term gas supply contracts and the ability to book and use pipeline capacity. Long-term contracts can guarantee the stable cashflow needed to develop capital-intensive upstream projects. People investing in these projects don t want to see the rules changing halfway through. Effective liquid markets also help give suppliers the confidence to invest. Regulatory complexity and uncertainty are the enemies of investment. Russian imports One thing that s proving stable is the flow of gas from Russia to Western Europe. Today, Russian gas accounts for around 40 per cent of supplies imported to Europe. Gazprom, which owns the world s richest gas reserves, has exported gas to Europe for over 40 years and Alex emphasises: Western Regulatory complexity and uncertainty are the enemies of investment Europe s gas market wouldn t exist without Gazprom. As Gazprom s marketing and trading arm, GM&T is well placed to supply Europe s liberalizing markets. And because we re trading on the market we can access gas from a variety of sources. To help guarantee supply, Gazprom is investing in two major new pipeline projects. One is the Nord Stream pipeline, which will have a capacity of 55bcm a year and will run under the Baltic Sea, linking Russia s and Northern Europe s gas transmission networks. The other is the South Stream pipeline, which will have a capacity of 63bcm a year. South Stream, expected to be completed in 2015, is being designed primarily to meet demand from South East and Central Europe. Gazprom is also investing in extra LNG capacity as part of the Shtokman development in the Arctic and already exports LNG as part of the Sakhalin II project in the Far East. As well as pipelines, Gazprom is investing in underground gas storage facilities; European storage projects include the Bergermeer Gas Storage project in the Netherlands, which will create Europe s largest gas-storage facility. The UK will also benefit from such investments via its pipeline connections to the continental European market. So with some help from the market, governments and GM&T, the UK can look forward to its supply future with confidence. A regular guy Alex Barnes (pictured) is Head of GM&T s Regulatory Affairs department, which ensures the company understands and meets its regulatory obligations. The department also helps GM&T manage risks derived from regulation and contributes to external regulatory processes in support of markets. If you have any queries about regulations and how they might affect your business, contact your customer account manager. Let s talk about specs In its efforts to secure gas supply, the UK faces a unique problem its gas specification is narrower than the rest of Europe s. Alex explains: Each European country has its own specification and gas that can flow almost anywhere in Europe cannot necessarily enter the UK. In January during the cold weather, when flows via the Bacton-Zeebrugge Interconnector were helping meet UK gas demand, the Interconnector was almost shut down because of gas quality issue differences. As the European market is much larger than the UK market, gas suppliers can choose to supply European markets rather than the UK if gas cannot enter Britain. This will continue until the price difference between the markets is sufficient to justify investment in facilities to treat the gas, so it can meet UK specifications. In the meantime there is the risk of price spikes if gas cannot enter the UK because of gas quality differences. You might ask, why can t the UK simply change its gas spec? The reason is that gas quality impacts on appliances used in the UK so if the gas is too rich or too lean, it can prove dangerous. The Government has clearly stated that it does not intend to change gas specs for the foreseeable future. Gas quality is a big priority for GM&T. Alex says: We re working with Ofgem and the Department of Energy & Climate Change to help solve the problem. The best solution would be for National Grid to be given responsibility for providing treatment facilities as part of its Regulated Asset Base. 12 GM&T ISSUE 3

PAUL HILL,PoweR Efficiency Page header PROFILE Paul Hill is a broker at Power Efficiency, a consultancy which offers procurement strategies and carbon-management services to blue-chip organisations in the corporate commercial sector Working as a broker is fast-paced as the business is different every day. We ve moved most of our clients over to buying in the wholesale market, so we have the excitement of operating in a fast-moving and volatile market. More and more clients will use third parties as market complexity and volatility increases. Satisfaction comes from doing the right deals for our clients. Many clients want an energy contract that satisfies their particular needs. It s challenging, as these requirements can differ greatly between, say, an investment bank and a propertymanaging agent. Experience makes a broker a good broker. You need to build relationships with your supplier, understand the risks they face and enable them to quote for the business. You ve also got to know the market and be confident enough to tell clients when to place their business. I ve got a grey hair for each of the last bull and bear markets and a grey streak for the credit crunch! I d like to think there will be more automation across the market in future at present, 99 per cent of our communication with suppliers is by phone or . We even know one supplier that has to manually type in details before they can register any site. And there aren t enough suppliers, so we are very pleased whenever a substantial company decides to enter the UK market or offer both electricity and gas. GM&T is always keen to understand our clients specific needs and has the required experience, expertise and innovative spark to come up with suitable solutions. 14 Ten ways Automated Meter Reading (AMR) can help you save energy and money More accurate billing Customers will know what they owe and be able to budget better. They need to understand their energy consumption in order to make intelligent decisions about it but that s not possible when the bill arrives months after the event. And when the bills are estimated, it s no surprise customers don t feel empowered to manage their energy use. AMR offers timely, accurate and detailed information to help customers take control of their energy use. No hidden costs Changing supplier or moving premises? No problem. With AMR, on-demand readings mean you only pay for the energy you have used. No debit or credit just one accurate bill. Pinpoint waste Consumption alerts provided by AMR warn you when your energy use is set to peak, allowing you to monitor your usage and alter your consumption accordingly. Analyse this AMR provides access to half-hourly, hourly, daily, weekly or monthly data, allowing customers to analyse and understand their gas usage throughout any period. In addition, the system can be configured to read multiple meters at the same point in time, allowing cross-consumption analysis over several sites.

Benefits for suppliers AMR allows suppliers to get closer to their customers, giving suppliers a better understanding of their customers so they can service their needs. This will lead to a reduction in the cost of serving customers, while suppliers will have fewer bill queries, complaints and site visits. Reduce emissions Meter-reading costs will come down dramatically as meters are read remotely. And that, in turn, will lead to lower carbon emissions as fewer meter readers will be on the road. Flexible solutions Gazprom Global Energy Solutions knows that all customers are different. That s why we offer flexible solutions that improve energy efficiency and help reduce energy costs. When you sign up to AMR, our innovative tariffs are tailored to meet the needs of specific customers needs. Lean and green AMR can help customers meet environmental targets and manage green programmes. Whether it s the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme or Climate Change Levy, the energy data you gain from AMR will help you manage your energy requirements. Facing the future AMR can help you future-proof in the face of upcoming legislation such as the European Union s Energy Performance of Buildings Directive. Net gain Remove the risk of running a debit or credit with suppliers. By installing AMR, customers have secure access to historical data and invoices. Copy or urgent invoices can be accessed whenever needed, just by logging on to the web page. GM&T Retail offers an AMR service. For more information call , or go to

ENERGY PURCHASING Structured products can help you manage risk while ensuring you get the energy pack The ever-changing price of gas means consultants and customers are always on the lookout for different purchasing options. And thanks to the evolution of European gas markets over last 10 years, which has seen the emergence of regional markets and the deregulation of national markets, energy consumers have more choices than ever before. But with this greater choice comes greater risk. With this in mind, GM&T Retail s Structured Products team has developed a number of flexible products designed to help consultants and customers minimise costs and manage risk when it comes to energy consumption. Structured products, which include anything that s not a fixed price, represent GM&T Retail s core business, which is selling flexible gas products to some of the UK and Ireland s largest customers. We offer a wide range of structured products, from our zero-balancing risk product which can provide budget security through to a fullbalancing risk product for customers that can actively manage their demand. All our products allow a variety of purchasing options including sell-back, with the minimum transaction volume being one of the lowest in the industry. And by adopting a bespoke approach, GM&T Retail has brought flexible products to smaller customers by implementing basket products with some of the UK s top consultancy firms. Our customers range from small takeaways to large corporations. Our supply of gas ranges from 600,000 therms to 50 million therms, depending on the size of the customer and their needs. Structured products can include energy products besides gas, and GM&T Retail develops products around customer requirements. A classic example is carbon credits which GM&T, with its own Carbon business, is in an ideal position to provide. Our carbon negotiators work with members of the European Union Emission Trading System (EU ETS) to buy, sell and swap European Union Allowances (EUAs) and Certified Emission Reductions (CERs). So if a customer is looking to purchase gas and offset their energy consumption by purchasing carbon credits, GM&T can act as a one-stop-shop. Demand for such a service is certainly growing with UK and global energy-efficiency schemes requiring businesses to flex appeal: what All of Gazprom Retail s flexible products include l Automated Meter Reading (AMR) for all sites l Direct access to in-house traders l Online billing l Carbon management options l Free daily market report 16 GM&T ISSUE 3

To learn more about flexible products call our Structured Products team on or the team at The price is right Fixed-price contracts offer energy consumers security against price rises A political event, an economic downturn, a new piece of legislation however much analysts try to predict what s going to happen to gas prices, you never know if something s going to happen that will make even the most considered market forecast look silly. So how do you guard against potential changes in gas prices? For customers, one way is to buy energy supplies through a fixed-price contract. This is when a customer agrees to buy at a fixed price for a set period, providing them with price protection for that period. GM&T Retail is currently offering fixed prices on gas to as far out as 30 April On power, we re offering a fixed price to 30 September We provide fixed-price contracts through more than 150 third-party brokers and consultants that we deal with. This is done by our UK and Ireland Fixed Contract sales team, made up of contract negotiators and data collectors, which offer fixed-price contracts not only on gas but on our other energy products, too. The team has built strong relationships with energy brokers and consultants and is committed to providing an effective after-sales process. GM&T Retail could soon be providing fixed-price contracts direct to customers the Fixed Contract sales team s main target for the coming months is to expand services into the direct arena for both gas and power, so watch this space! 18 GM&T CARBON Perspectives As organisations worldwide attempt to reduce emissions, clean technology is taking off and becoming big business, explains Simon Crook Clean living At the European Cleantech Forum in Paris earlier this year I was particularly struck by one thing: revenues. The clean-technology businesses represented at the conference, which tends to focus on earlier stage businesses, are now not only generating revenues but generating them in millions and even tens of millions of pounds. Now if on reading this you are thinking, How can the existence of revenues be a highlight at a business conference? then you probably work in an established business. I ve not even mentioned profits, but let s not get ahead of ourselves. Your established business is exactly what the clean sector (also known as the green or low-carbon sector) needs. One of the reasons I joined GM&T is because I believe that corporates have a key role to play in the scale-up of the low-carbon sector. Reducing emissions Unfortunately, however, this brings me to a concern that came to me on returning from the conference. Without becoming too academic, the point of businesses operating within the low-carbon sector is to help society reduce its greenhouse gas emissions and therefore avert dangerous climate change. Emissions are only reduced if products, projects and services are bought and used. Revenues of only US$10 million, or even US$100million, are simply not enough to make a significant dent in global emissions. Of course more established low-carbon businesses, such as wind-turbine companies and solarcell manufacturers, are already making revenues in billions of dollars. However, to achieve the emissions cuts necessary, we also need more innovative businesses developing, for example, biomass digesters, building technologies and smart grid technologies to make significant sales too. So what can we do? The answer is: plenty. Firstly, established businesses can act as early-adopter buyers for new, low-carbon technologies. Secondly, we can use our market access and brands to encourage customers to adopt new, low-carbon solutions. And third, we can positively influence government and industry bodies to create a more benign market place for the adoption of low-carbon products and services. Scaling up So what are we doing about scaling up clean technologies? I m writing this article while flying to southeast Asia to look at a number of low-carbon Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects. For companies with international operations and assets this mechanism offers a means of subsidising the implementation of carbon-reducing technologies. Another example is our acquisition of TruRead, a relatively small business that has come up with a great smart meter for measuring and managing gas consumption in commercial facilities.
