5 Professional Experience My scientific career has exposed me to many different observatories and observing techniques, different research cultures and many scientists. Through my collaborations I have been able to participate in some of the most exciting developments in observational cosmology. The discovery of cosmic acceleration through supernovae and the follow-up projects have kept me busy for the past decade. This work has been recognised in several prizes to the team leaders and the High-z Supernova Search Team (the latter specifically by the Breakthrough of the Year 1998 and the Gruber Prize in Cosmology). I have been given many opportunities to present my work at conferences, workshops, colloquia, graduate schools and in public talks (in English and German; for a fairly complete list of presentation since 2002 see bleibund/talks.html). I have written articles for newspapers and magazines, given interviews for radio, television and public magazines. The experience in large teams was beneficial for my collaborations in European initiatives, like the European Supernova Collaboration organised through the EU Research Training Network, the TransRegio collaboration between Munich, Bonn and Heidelberg, and the Munich Excellence Cluster. It also has helped me in my work for ESO in connection with public surveys and the observing programmes committee. Throughout my career I have worked with students. First as a mentor while a postdoc at Harvard and Berkeley and since a few years as informal and formal PhD supervisor. This expertise was instrumental for my work with the students and postdocs in the ESO Office for Science. I have continuously extended the programme (e.g. through the introduction of ALMA Fellows or the ESO Fellow Symposia) over the past years. I have also actively shaped the mentoring of young staff at ESO and helped several young astronomers along in their careers. I regularly am asked to referee publications, grant proposals and provide evaluations for tenure decisions and award nominations. Recently I have also been asked to serve on several visiting committees (e.g. Isaac Newton Group, Astronomisches Institut Potsdam). I was a member of the ESA European Dark Energy Concept Advisory Team and have been asked to serve on the Science Study Team for this mission. In addition, I have co-organised many workshops and conferences as member of Scientific as well as Local Organising Committees. At ESO, I first worked on operational concepts for the VLT while a member of the Science Division. This included work on the science operations planning of the VLT and the definition of the data flow model. I have been instrumental in the implementation of the VLT science operations in Garching working with the VLT Programme Scientist in the Office of the Director General. Then I formed and led the Data Flow Operations group within the Data Management Division, which was tasked with the post-observational processing of the VLT data. This included also the running of the science archive. Currently, I am heading the Office for Science, which encompasses the Fellowship- and Studentship Programmes and the organisation of all research activities at ESO in Garching and in Chile. In this function, I regularly evaluate the research work of ESO Faculty astronomers, now also formally as part of the annual performance assessment. Since February 2008 I am interim Director for Science of the organisation. As a member of ESO s upper management and the ESO Council Science Strategy Working Group I take an active role in the development of ESO.
