5 WHAT S STOPPING YOU? My wife and I moved to Hamilton with our 5 children so I could study Arboriculture. We knew it would be tough but when you know you re doing the right thing, you just knuckle down and do it. It s only for a season, and it s worth it for the options that are available to me and my family now. 6 WHAT S STOPPING YOU? Literacy Waikato Literacy Waikato helps people improve their reading, writing, spelling and basic numeracy skills. Some learners come to Literacy Waikato to help them prepare for Wintec courses. Others want to gain further skills so they can do better at work, or manage better at home. The teaching is FREE and offered either one-onone, or in small groups - whatever suits you best. Or maybe you don t meet the entry criteria of the programme you want to study. Either way, there is a solution. Our foundation programmes are specifically designed to provide the skills and confidence you need to move into diploma or degree level study. I finally took the first step in my mid-forties taking the Introduction to Study course at Wintec. The course was so stimulating and I learnt so many new study techniques. I went on to study and successfully graduated from the Bachelor of Midwifery. I am now building up my caseload as a Registered Midwife and it is such a privilege and blessing to walk beside women, families and whänau in their birth journey. 8 WHAT S STOPPING YOU? I m NOT GOOD ON A COMPUTER Our free programmes teach you introductory skills that will increase your computer confidence for work, personal use or further study. They cover Microsoft programmes, internet and . Our Centre for Languages offers ESOL programmes from introductory through to upper-intermediate level and some programmes are FREE. To find out more visit In 2011 I didn t know how to speak English. I would not go into restaurants to order food because I couldn t ask, or say the right things. I was too embarrassed. So I studied English at Wintec. It was good because the teachers were patient and very kind; they told me don t panic, relax. I quit school when I was 14; I even lived under a bridge for a while. When I had my 2 kids I realised I wanted something more. Now I m studying to be a graphic designer. I work my butt off, but I m never going to quit. I know that when you re striving for a better future, nothing is impossible. 11 YOUR FUTURE GETTING A JOB WHEN I GraduatE Wintec programmes are developed in partnership with Waikato employer groups, so you are learning the skills that employers are looking for. Studying here is not all about theory, it s practical and hands-on, and most of our programmes have on-the-job experience so you will graduate ready for work. When you start looking for work, Wintec s Careers Services (Student Life Office) can offer you advice, job seeking skills, CV writing, interview skills and face-to-face support. I HAVE ALREADY LEARNT A LOT THROUGH MY WORK Headstart recognises the skills and knowledge gained through work and life experience, and these can be credited towards a qualification. This means you don t have to re-learn what you already know, and it won t take as long to complete a qualification. 12 INTRODUCTORY PROGRAMMES Certificate in Introduction to Study (Level 2) Duration: Study: Location: Starts end of February and end of July for one semester Full-time or part-time equivalent Hamilton City Campus OVERVIEW The Certificate in Introduction to Study (Level 2) provides a broad base for students who have left school with little or no qualifications to staircase into higher levels of study. You will develop an understanding of what is expected at tertiary level, along with the skills, knowledge and confidence you need to continue further study at tertiary level. ADDITIONAL INFORMatiON Our Vocational Pathway experience is an opportunity for students to find out more about, and get a feel for, possible future employment options. It consists of a series of taster sessions that focus on a particular vocation/field, e.g.primary Industries (animal care, horticulture, arboriculture, floristry), Service Industries (tourism, customer skills, business administration), and more. WHat YOU LL STUDY Writing Skills - including essay writing, assignment preparation, report writing, referencing in-text and compiling bibliographies. Communication Skills - including written and oral presentation skills, locating and organising information. Tertiary Study Skills - including learning styles, principles of learning, reflective journal writing, using technology to support study and assignment preparation Personal Development - including self management, study skills, stress management, time management and vocational pathway experience. 13 Certificate in introduction to study (level 4) Duration: Study: Location: Starts end of February and end of July for one semester Full-time or part time equivalent Hamilton City Campus OVERVIEW This full-time 18 week programme is designed to prepare students for further study at diploma or degree level. You will develop an understanding of what is expected of you to study at tertiary level, and be provided opportunities to develop the necessary skills, knowledge and confidence needed to succeed in tertiary education. There are two streams in this programme: The Level 4 generic stream is for you if you wish to move on to diploma or degree level study. The Level 4 health stream is for you if you wish to go on to further study in nursing, midwifery, sports science or health-related programmes. WHat YOU LL STUDY Writing Skills (Generic and Health) including essay writing, assignment preparation, report writing, reflective journal writing, referencing in-text and compiling bibliographies. Technology for Tertiary Study (Generic) including basic word processing, internet, online learning, PowerPoint, Publisher, and using technology to support study and assignment preparation. 14 INTRODUCTORY PROGRAMMES Certificate OF university preparation (LEVEL 4) Duration: Study: Location: Starts March and July for one semester Full-time University of Waikato Hillcrest Campus OVERVIEW If you have studied to year 13 at school but don t meet the entry requirements to study a degree, or if you need additional academic preparation for tertiary study, then this certificate programme can help you make the transition into degree-level study. There are two compulsory papers in study skills and critical thinking, as well as two papers with subject-specific material. After successfully completing the certificate, you will be eligible to apply to study a degree from the following semester. This programme is offered jointly by Wintec and the University of Waikato, but is taught on the University of Waikato s Hamilton campus in Hillcrest. WHat YOU LL STUDY This is a qualification in computing and information technology and offers students the opportunity to study computer hardware, data management, networks, multimedia development, computer programming and software applications. HOW YOU LL STUDY This programme is taught both online and face-to-face. The student online learning tool, Moodle, supports your studies through forums, chat-rooms and online lessons. This programme is recommended for those who have some word processing skills and wish to build on their skills and knowledge, as well as those wanting to enter other careers where administrative skills are essential. It is also possible to include the National Certificate in Business Administration and Computing (Level 3) within this programme. PowerPoint Computerised Accounting And complete a week of Business Practice Career Opportunities The Certificate in Business Administration and Computing (Level 3) will lead to a variety of office-related jobs such as Receptionist, Office Junior, Administrator, Records Officer or Data Processor. Wintec offers certificate programmes which are generally 6 months to a year in length and will help you develop entry level skills for employment, or further study. You might be ready to enter straight into a diploma or degree - ask us about your best starting point. qualification staircase Certificate Normally Levels 1-4 Certificates are awarded in a variety of subjects at a range of levels and may be of differing lengths. exit to employment DiPLOMa Normally Levels 5-6 Diplomas awarded are usually at a higher level than Certificates and are one to two years in length. exit to employment degree Level 7 A Degree is awarded for advanced study that concentrates on general principles and essential knowledge. They are usually three to four years in length. Graduate / Postgraduate / Honours Levels 7-8 Honours, Graduate and Postgraduate programmes are for study after the completion of an initial degree and are ideal if you are wanting to broaden your existing knowledge or retrain in areas of demand.
