Moss Vale Family Practice Practice Teaching Plan 1. Scope of Clinical Practice a) A descriptive profile of patients attending the Practice. Medicare data shows that Moss Vale Family Practice sees patients in all age groups in the same proportion as the average over our region b) The special interests and skills of individual supervisors and others involved in teaching. Dr Murray Ludington; - Practice Principal - Principal Supervisor - VMO Southern Highlands Private Hospital - All other General Practitioners are keen teachers and interested to support Dr Ludington in Registrar training. Dr Gloria Marchioni; - Interest in musculoskeletal medicine Dr Stephen Helme; - VMO Southern Highlands Private Hospital - Interest in office based minor surgery - Works A+E Department Bowral and District Hospital Dr Fiona Mackintosh - Interests in Paediatrics, ante natal care and women s health c) Services provided outside of the Practice - Home visits and Nursing Home visits occur regularly - Dr Ludington and Dr Helme provide inpatient care at Southern Highlands Private Hospital. - Dr Helme works shifts in A&E at Bowral & District Hospital
d) Other teaching opportunities accessible from the Practice; - An Audiologist, Podiatrist and Psychologist all work from the Practice. - Dr Ludington regularly attends the Friday morning X-ray meeting at Bowral & District Hospital which is an institution as a teaching and learning meeting in the district - Registrars are invited to any local educational events put on by the Medicare Local pharmaceutical companies, Southern Highlands Private Hospital etc. - Registrars at Moss Vale Family Practice have the opportunity to attend fortnightly Southern Highlands Regional Educational Collaborative (SHREC) teaching sessions at Southern Highlands Private Hospital - Moss Vale Family Practice has regular educational sessions for the whole practice, recent examples include sessions provided by Medical Software provider and Medico Legal Insurer - Moss Vale Family Practice has strong links with many local providers including Radiology, Physiotherapy, Pharmacy, Palliative Care, Community Nursing and all provide opportunities for Registrars to work collaboratively. 2. How Routine Teaching is Organised a) Who teaches and when; Dr Ludington and the Registrar have teaching time booked in the appointment book each week. Usually this will be at the same time each week at a mutually convenient time. It will always be when enough other Doctors are working to ensure that their teaching won t be disturbed. b) Modes of teaching available & preferred; - The preferred teaching mode is face to face allocated teaching time and this provides the basis of teaching - Early in the term the Learning Plan and RACGP Standard T.17 are reviewed to help guide teaching in the direction of the Registrar s self identified needs. - There will be sessions dedicated to Registrar observing the Supervisor consulting, Supervisor observing the Registrar consulting and where Registrar and Supervisor see alternate patients. - Sessions will be dedicated to reviewing notes and correspondence and reflecting on difficult or interesting consultations or consultations that went well or not so well. - The registrar will be able to ask the Supervisor or another G.P a question at any time they are consulting and will at times be asked if they would like to see an interesting patient with another Doctor. - Case based teaching is regularly used to drive learning and teaching - Exam preparation is offered where appropriate for the Registrar s stage and need
c) The role of direct observation/videotaping in the Practice; - Direct observation is the main form of teaching at Moss Vale Family Practice. Videotaping is available when either the Registrar or Supervisor consider that it may enhance teaching 3. How Supervision is Organised and Scheduled Dr Ludington is the Registrar Supervisor and is the first point of call for advice. However, all Doctors in the Practice are keen teachers and are willing to deputise for Dr Ludington when he is not available as well as providing teaching in their own areas of interest and expertise. Formal teaching time is sacrosanct, allocated in the appointment book and not to be disturbed. 4. How Assessment is Organised and Undertaken - Assessment of Registrars (and the Supervisor!) is done formally and informally - Dr Ludington completes formative assessments on the GPrime website - Registrars are assessed by other Doctors through the ECT visits - Supervisors and Registrars will review each others consultation notes and correspondence and review cases - Patient and staff feedback on Registrars will be passed onto the Registrar via Dr Ludington - The Learning Plan will be regularly reviewed to assess how teaching and learning is tracking against identified needs - Informal assessment will be a regular part of case review 5. Resources available in the Practice - Moss Vale Family Practice is a computer based Practice using Genie clinical and management software. All computers have internet access and there will always be a computer available to the Registrar. - The Practice library is stocked with all the texts suggested by CCCGPT - The Practice subscribes to a number of online resources 6. Other CPD & Education Opportunities in the Area These are well outlined in other teaching opportunities in Part 1. The learning opportunities at Moss Vale Family Practice are limited only by the Registrars imagination and available time. It is doubtful any Registrar could avail themselves of every possible opportunity.
7. Participation in Wider Clinical and Community Leadership Roles - Dr Ludington is a former Director of the Southern Highlands Division of General Practice. - Moss Vale Family Practice uses its waiting room as a gallery to exhibit the work of local artists, with each exhibition having an opening night where money is raised towards a local charity - Various teaching and examining commitments as outlines in Section 1. - Involvement in University of Wollongong Department of General Practice Research projects
Part C Record of periodic goals set by the Practice with respect to teaching and supervision: Our next Registrar will be our first. The first ambition of the Moss Vale Family Practice is to have the honour bestowed upon it by CCCGPT to be fit to host Registrars. Then we will be subject to the real test of whether or not we are a suitable practice to make a contribution to the development and education of junior colleagues. This will be adjudged not only by ongoing accreditation from CCCGPT and Registrars who have passed through the Practice obtaining FRACGP, but by whether or not we become popular with Registrars and whether or not the Practice considers that it is passing on what it considers to be the ethos of General Practice and whether or not we are contributing to the survival, maintenance and betterment of General Practice. Firstly we need to be passed fit to have a Registrar. Then initially we will be learning and developing our techniques just as we did when we were Registrars. Time will tell, but we are keen to have a crack.
