Outcome of call FP7-Infrastructures Short description of projects currently in the negotiation process Integrating Activities Social Sciences and Humanities INFRA Integrating Digital Archives and resources for research on Medieval and Modern European History CENDARI CENDARI will provide and facilitate access to existing archives and resources in Europe for the study of medieval and modern European history, through the development of an enquiry environment. The enquiry environment is at the heart of this IA, which will create new ways to ways to allow researchers to engage with large data sets across ERA in two domains: Medieval culture and the First World War. Work in this IA will leverage the power of the ESFRI European Infrastructure for Digital Humanities (DARIAH). Life Sciences INFRA Facilities and resources for protein structure determination at synchrotron radiation sources BioStruct-X BioStruct will establish a state-of-the-art coordinated and multi-site infrastructure for the elucidation of structures of a broad range of biological macromolecules and cellular and subcellular ultra structures. The project will in particular provide via a central mechanism, integrated guidance and transnational access to 43 installations in four key areas: protein production, high throughput crystallisation, macromolecular X-ray crystallography, small angle X-ray scattering and X-ray imaging. INFRA Facilities and resources for multinational clinical trials ECRIN-IA ECRIN is an ESFRI distributed infrastructure designed to support investigator-driven multinational clinical research, making Europe a single area for clinical studies and taking advantage of its population size to access patients. The project will in particular promote pan-european expansion to 9 new countries. It will support the services for multi-national clinical trials on rare diseases, medical device and nutrition. It will also develop tools for riskadapted monitoring and will upgrade data management tools. European Commission May
INFRA Facilities and resources for plant phenotyping EPPN While significant progress has been made in molecular and genetic tools for plant breeding in recent years, the quantitative analysis of structure and function of plants, i.e. plant phenotyping, has become a major bottleneck. The aim of this project is to bring together the leading plant phenotyping facilities in Europe. The project will provide high throughput whole plant phenotyping access to user communities in plant sciences. It will also adapt and develop novel sensors and methods/assays for application in plant phenotyping. Environmental Sciences and Earth Sciences INFRA Integrated non-co2 greenhouse gas Observing Systems InGOS InGOS will support and integrate the observing capacity of non-co2 greenhouse gases (NCGHG: CH4, N2O, SF6, H2 and halocarbons) in Europe. The emissions of these gases are very uncertain. InGOS aims to improve the existing European observation system and provide the knowledge of the concentration levels of European and extra-european emissions of the NCGHGs. The data from the network will enable a better understanding of the emissions of NCGHGs within the EU and show whether emission reduction policies are effective. INFRA Multidisciplinary Marine Data Centres SeaDataNet II The project brings together National Oceanographic Data Centres (NODCs), and marine information services of research institutes, from 35 states bordering the European seas. It will upgrade the present SeaDataNet infrastructure by providing high quality access to ocean and marine metadata, data and data products, by setting, adopting and promoting common data management standards and by realising technical and semantic interoperability with other relevant data management systems and initiatives. INFRA Research infrastructures for forestry research TREES4FUTURE TREES4FUTURE will contribute in helping the European forestry sector respond, in a sustainable manner, to increasing demands for wood products and services (among which preservation of forest biodiversity) in a context of changing climatic conditions. To do so TREES4FUTURE will integrate major, yet rarely interacting forestry communities (and their resources) from geneticists to environmentalists and from communities working at the tree/population scale to those working at forestry landscape/wood basin levels as well as industry concerns. The long-term objective of TREES4FUTURE is to provide the whole European forestry community, with an easy and comprehensive access to complementary sources of information and expertise to optimise the short and long-term exploitation of the forest resources by both the research community and the socio-economic players. European Commission May
Energy INFRA Research Infrastructures for thermo-chemical biomass conversion BRISK BRISK will integrate the key research infrastructures in Europe in the field of thermochemical biomass conversion (combustion, gasification, pyroloysis, torrefaction, modelling). Partners are research institutions, together with a research-oriented company, an industrial enterprise and a large industry-oriented research foundation in the field. The project gives transnational access to the installations of 23 of the 25 partners, develops new methodologies and testing methods and works on benchmarking and the establishment of databases. BRISK will be complementary to SET-Plan Implementation activities and will have relations to industry. INFRA Research Infrastructures for Hydrogen & Fuel Cells facilities H2FC H2FC will integrate the key research infrastructures in Europe for Hydrogen and Fuel Cells research. The project gives transnational access to the installations of 15 of the 19 partners, improves the facilities through four JRA's and develops a long-term vision for RIs in the field. The activities are in synergy to and cooperation with the HFC Joint Undertaking and support the implementation of Community energy policy goals. Analytical Facilities and Material Sciences INFRA Laser sources LASERLAB-EUROPE LASERLAB-EUROPE III is the European Consortium of major Laser Research Infrastructures (RIs). It covers geographically most of EU MSs and scientifically most areas of laser science. Applications range from coherent x-ray generation, laser particle acceleration, laboratory astrophysics, attosecond physics to fusion research, materials research and biomedicine. The main objectives are 1) To maintain a competitive, inter-disciplinary network of European national laser labs, 2) To strengthen Europe's leadership in laser research 3) To engage in transnational access 4) To assist in the development of laser RIs at national and EU level, inlcluding the pan-european RIs ELI and HiPER. INFRA Infrastructures for Neutron Scattering and Muon Spectroscopy NMI3-II The NMI3-II coordination effort will render public investment more efficient by harmonizing and reinforcing the services provided to the Neutron and Muon Spectroscopy user community. NMI3 is a comprehensive consortium of 18 partners from 11 different countries that includes all major providers of neutrons and muons in Europe. Transnational Open Access will build further capacity for European users. It will foster mobility and improve the overall creation of scientific knowledge by providing the best researchers with the opportunity to use the most adapted infrastructures. Joint Research activities will create synergies in innovative instrument development that will feed directly into improved and European Commission May
more efficient provision of services to the users. Networking activities will reinforce integration by harmonizing procedures, setting standards and disseminating knowledge. Physics and Astronomy INFRA Research Infrastructures for advanced radio astronomy RadioNet RadioNet coordinates all of Europe s leading radioastronomy facilities in a focused, coherent, integrated and sustainable cooperation to achieve transformational improvement in the quality and quantity of the scientific research of European astronomers. Its general goals are: to provide and facilitate access to the complete range of Europe s outstanding radio-astronomical facilities, including the ALMA telescope; to secure a long term perspective on scientific and technical developments in radio astronomy, pooling the skills, resources and expertise that exist within the RadioNet partnership; to stimulate new R&D activities for the already existing radio infrastructures in synergy with ALMA and with the SKA; to contribute to the implementation of the vision developed in the ASTRONET Strategic Plan for European Astronomy by building a sustainable radio astronomical research community with world leading qualifications. INFRA Research Infrastructures for hadron physics: Studying the properties of nuclear matter at extreme conditions Hadronphysics HadronPhysics3 is continuing the success of the previous HadronPhysics project in FP6 and the current HadronPhysics2 in FP7, and originates from the initiative of more than European scientists working in the field of hadron physics. The main objective of this Integrating Activity is to optimize the use and development of the Research Infrastructures existing in Europe working in the field of hadron physics. The Project aims as well at structuring, on European scale, the way Research Infrastructures operate, and at fostering their joint development in terms of capacity and performance. The approach used is the bottom up approach, to respond to the needs of the scientific community in all fields of science and technology. Design Studies INFRA ARISE ARISE proposes to design a new infrastructure that integrates different station networks in order to provide a new 3D image of the atmosphere from the ground to the mesosphere with unprecedented spatio-temporal resolution. The infrastructure extends across Europe and outlying regions, including polar and equatorial regions. The expected benefits of ARISE are two-fold. First, the measurements will allow a better description of the atmosphere state, leading to an improved accuracy in short and medium range weather forecasts. Second, the measurements will be used to improve the simulation of middle atmosphere European Commission May
climate and its tropospheric impact. The benefits also include civil applications related to monitoring of natural hazards as volcanoes. HiLumi LHC The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the largest scientific instrument ever built. To extend its discovery potential, the LHC will need a major upgrade around 2020 to increase its luminosity (rate of collisions) by a factor of 10 beyond its design value. As a highly complex and optimized machine, such an upgrade of the LHC must be carefully studied and requires about 10 years to implement. This Design Study will Include European as well as leading US and Japanese laboratories. GROOM The project aims at the design of a new European research infrastructure to maintain and operate a European fleet of remotely controlled underwater gliders, in coordination with other European and international initiatives. Complementary to other ocean observing systems, this new infrastructure will be beneficial for both academic oceanographic research and operational oceanography systems. LAGUNA-LBNO Underground observatories are key tools in Astroparticle Physics research to study terrestrial and astrophysical neutrinos and search for rare events. The previous LAGUNA FP7 design study has conducted a detailed geo-technical assessment of the giant underground cavern needed and evaluated seven pre-selected locations. Building on this, the new study will adress two challenges vital to making a final detector and site choice: (i) to determine the full cost of construction underground, commissioning and long-term operation of the infrastructure, and (ii) to determine the full impact of including long baseline neutrino physics with beams from CERN. Implementation Phase projects INFRA Implementation of common solutions for a cluster of ESFRI infrastructures in the field of "Social Sciences and Humanities" DASISH DASISH provides solutions to a number of common issues for the five projects in social sciences and humanities: CESSDA, CLARIN, DARIAH, ESS and SHARE. These five SSH infrastructures will work together along four major areas of common concern: data quality, data archiving, data access and legal and ethical issues. The outcome of this work will form the basis for educational activities and for outreach to the communities of researchers that will benefit from these infrastructures. European Commission May
INFRA Implementation of common solutions for a cluster of ESFRI infrastructures in the field of "Life sciences" BioMedBridges The BioMedBridges consortium brings together the six under implementation ESFRI infrastructures (ELIXIR, BBMRI, EATRIS, ECRIN, InfraFrontier and INSTRUCT). The project will identify and implement standard interoperable services to allow the linking, exchange and deposition of large volumes of data from one infrastructure to another, across the biological and biomedical domain. Public data will be freely accessible through these standard interoperable services. Also, standards for secure and restricted access will be identified and implemented where projects need to share sensitive data (medical information or data with intellectual property issues). INFRA Implementation of common solutions for a cluster of ESFRI infrastructures in the field of "Environmental Sciences" ENVRI The ENVRI project gathers seven ESFRI Environment projects (the others are represented in the advisory board) to develop, with the support from ICT experts, common data and software components and services for their facilities. The results will speed up the construction of these infrastructures and will allow interoperability among them. Common challenges faced by the ENVRI infrastructures include data capture from distributed sensors, metadata standardisation, management of high volume data, workflow execution and data visualisation. The common standards, deployable services and tools developed by ENVRI will be adopted by each infrastructure as it progresses through its construction phase. The project will be based on a common reference model created by capturing the semantic resources of the ESFRI infrastructures. INFRA Implementation of common solutions for a cluster of ESFRI infrastructures in the field of "Physics, Astronomy and Analytical Facilities" CRISP The objective of the eleven participating ESFRI Research Infrastructures projects is to build up collaborations and to create long-term synergies to facilitate their implementation and enhance their efficiency and attractiveness. The CRISP proposal focuses on four R&D tasks that are of utmost importance for these RIs: (i) Accelerators, (ii) Instruments & Experiments, (iii) Detectors & Data Acquisition, and (iv) Information Technology (IT) & Data Management. Support to policy development and programme implementation INFRA : ERA-NET supporting cooperation for research infrastructures in all S&T fields SIM4RDM SIM4RDM is intended to enable researchers to effectively utilise the emerging data infrastructures by ensuring that they have the knowledge, skills and support infrastructures necessary to adopt good research data management methodologies. It aims to support ESFRI in labour intensive activities e.g. the organisation of European and international workshops to enhance international cooperation of ESFRI projects, lobbying activities versus the European Parliament, and the analyse of socio-economic aspects of RIs. CoPoRI is co-ordinating the outreach activities of the ESFRI projects and it will also provide a co-ordinated representation to the outside world including political decision makers, the general public, national governance, non-european countries etc. CReATIVE-B This project will support interaction between the LifeWatch ESFRI Research Infrastructure with RI on biodiversity and ecosystems research in other parts of the world. The first objective is to define a road map for interoperability on technological level, on governance level and on interrelation with the scientific communities using the RIs. The project will be a catalyst for worldwide collaboration in this field by supporting and initiating coordination activities of these RIs. The greater objective of this collaboration is to serve the goals of GEOSS. GO-SKA Building on the work of the Preparatory phase for the Square Kilometre Array, GO-SKA will: -broaden and strengthen the involvement of funding agencies and governments around the globe; -establish world-wide partnerships between industry and SKA; -prepare the establishment of global governance for the SKA organisation; -developstrategies to further define the conditions by which non-scientific benefits from large scale research; infrastructures can best be integrated into investment decision-making. ICAN The project ICAN, aims to network the laser and fibre communities by one side and the high energy physics community on the other one, all of them being ready to collaborate to the definition, conception, design and then realisation of on a new concept of a fibre laser based solution for wakefield applications to high energy physics. In order to attempt this ambitious goal the ICAN project will organizing 3 conferences and 10 workshops allowing every participants to present their results, progresses, ideas and requirements related to the ICAN concept. International cooperation and approaching of Funding Agencies are also considered in the work plan of ICAN. European Commission May
InfraCoMP InfraCoMP aims at establishing efficient coordination mechanisms between the ESFRI project Infrafrontier and the International Mouse Phenotyping Consortium (IMPC) via the organisation of a series of joint workshops. The IMPC, an ongoing global effort to carry out systemic phenotyping of mouse lines to create an encyclopaedia of the mammalian genome, will use, in particular, the infrastructure resources provided by Infrafrontier. SIDERI The objective of the project is to strengthen the links and integration of the Euro-Argo European research infrastructure into the Argo International strategy of global ocean observations, and to seek participation by, and to develop cooperation with, potential participants in the European neighbouring areas which have a maritime interest. INNET INNET aims at reinforcing and extending the existing worldwide archiving grid for endangered language and at promoting the use of these archives not only by researchers but also by schools and the public. It will also revitalize the existing expert network. The project will foster a worldwide extension and increased impact of CLARIN and it will create a larger user base for the data stored in the CLARIN center network. The expert network will be used to disseminate the CLARIN achievements. INFRA : Study for the development of a possible future EU action on scientific instrumentation EIRIISS This study is intended to: a) quantify the current size and potential for growth of the instrumentation market; b) identify the current bottlenecks in the industrial implementation process; c) determine the activities in the process of RI instrumentation development and subsequent industrial exploitation that would benefit most from an EU supported activity. The view from industry of the perceived risks and benefits associated with industrial engagement with the RIs will be recorded so that it can also be taken into account in programme development planning. The evidence for the need and the recommendations on the financial, technological and geographical scope for EU support will be presented to support the development of a new EU action.
