1 San Antonio Health Story Food Fairs Improve Community Health STORY: United Way and partners have built two community gardens, and two education-themed playscapes have been created. These small but profound improvements to San Antonio s Eastside Promise Neighborhood translate into healthier, more affordable food for neighborhood families and safe places for hundreds of youth to play. FAST FACT: In partnership with the San Antonio Food Bank weekly food fairs distributed 72,277 pounds of fresh produce and healthy recipes to 1,006 families. San Antonio Income Story VITA Volunteer Make Tax Time Savings E-Z STORY: United Way, City of San Antonio, Catholic Charities and the IRS lead a multi-sector coalition in support of VITA. The VITA San Antonio coalition has the largest number of volunteer tax preparers in the country just over 500 were trained this tax season and 391 became IRS Certified. This year Pandora Radio Mobile was added as a marketing strategy and proved to be a very cost effective medium. The radio ad was heard almost to 800,000 times and over 10,000 listeners clicked on the VITA ad leading them to the home page. According to Pandora, the VITA ad performed better than most typical mobile audio ads. FAST FACT: 2014 VITA efforts resulted in 33,018 returns prepared at 20 VITA sites and 3 mobile units bringing back $58 million to the local San Antonio community. Cumulative results over the last 12 tax seasons total just over $600 million. click HERE to hear audio
2 San Antonio Education Story #1 STORY: Increasing parent engagement produces families who are well supported and connected, increases shared accountability for educational outcomes, and ultimately supports a well-educated workforce prepared for 21st century employment. United Way s Family School Community Partnership (FSCP) focuses on parent-led and parent driven parental engagement strategies. Now in 28 schools in three low-income independent school districts, parent-to-parent home visits are proving to be the root of this model s success. click HERE to see video (NOTE: To view video, you MUST enter the password: sanantonio) FAST FACT: Early evaluation results indicate the efficacy of the FSCP. The Partnership Schools had an annual average 96.56% average daily attendance. A thirty-three percent reduction in suspensions for students typically suspended during their middle school years, and a 50% reduction in suspensions for students who begin to be suspended in first grade and onward. In the academic year , parents conducted 4,005 home visits and more than 104,000 parent-volunteer hours were logged. San Antonio Education Story #2 Four-year-old Tells Secretary Duncan About His Promise Neighborhood STORY: Among the many Eastside Promise Neighborhood metrics being tracked, early childhood and kindergarten readiness are critically important. In addition to working with the school district to expand pre-k slots and improve quality at center-based and family, friends and neighbor childcare, Promise is also tracking parent involvement and how often parents read to their very young children. During a recent visit by the US Department of Education, this pre-k youngster read his remarks to Secretary Arne Duncan and stole the show. click HERE to see video FAST FACT: For early childhood education, the impact of formal early childhood settings (Pre-K, Head Start, and subsidized childcare) has shown significant gains in the developmental readiness of kindergarten students; for the three EPN elementary schools, the students increases in kinder readiness in four or more domains moved from 9% to 19% for one campus 8% to 26% for the second campus 31% to 52% for the third campus U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, center, talks with Elizabeth Pagan, a mother and college student with EPN s Dual Generation Program, after they participated in a panel discussion about President Obama s Promise Zone initiative at Tynan Early Childhood Education Center in San Antonio on Thursday, June 19, Parent Engagement Facilitator Amanda Garcia, left, also participated in the discussion.
3 San Antonio Education Story #3 The San Antonio Spurs are Champions On and Off the Court STORY: Each year during the NBA Finals, the league partners with the Western and Eastern Conference Teams, along with State Farm and Samsung, to create an NBA CARES Learn & Play Center in each city. For the second year in a row, the Spurs have selected an Eastside Promise Neighborhood School, Bowden Elementary school, home school to the Spurs Sports and Entertainment Rodeo Read Trip. FAST FACT: Much needed library renovations and the installation of state-of-the-art computer lab and Spurs themed play spaces complete with new books, bolstered the pride and spirit of the youngsters and the neighborhood. San Antonio Women s Leadership Story #1 STORY: Very early in our community impact work, the Women s Leadership Council (WLC) identified a critical area of need and directed WLC funding to remove barriers for food insecurity. In meetings with parents and principals, WLC members discovered that during the twoweek holiday break, children did not have access to free or reduced breakfast and/or lunch simply because it was not available. From principal reports they learned that children begin hoarding food in early December. WLC in partnership with the San Antonio Food Bank and parent rooms devised food gifts initially a 14-item bag of food --to go home with each child for the break. WLC soon learned from thank you notes from the children that they were sharing the food with their families. FAST FACT: Last year, with help from local grocer H-E-B, more than 16,222 food gift bags, weighing 20 pounds each, were distributed.
4 San Antonio Women s Leadership Story #2 Childcare Scholarships Help Children & Parents Succeed STORY: Women s Leadership Council (WLC) has identified its signature issue to be childcare scholarships to parenting students who do not qualify for other assistance and are seeking a degree or vocational training. FAST FACT: 23 scholarships were awarded to 18 student parents for childcare assistance. To date more than 250 scholarships have been awarded, with a 100% graduation rate! From: Scholarship recipient To: United Way of San Antonio & Bexar County Subject: Scholarship thank you Good Day, First and foremost THANK YOU!! I wanted to send you and United Way a few Pictures of our Accomplishment. The reason I say ours and Not MINE is because YOU and UNITED WAY made this Achievement a Success. I am so grateful I was given the opportunity to achieve my goal and not only stopping there but United way has given me the opportunity to still further my education. When I first applied for the Women s Leadership Council Childcare Scholarship I was so scared because everything I had been through in my life was so difficult and thought I cannot catch a break, but because of your nonprofit and dedication upon helping others better themselves through education several people have accomplished their dreams. There was a point I did want to give up, because I was pregnant and my daughter was very ill and thought I m not going to be able to finish school but Ms. Cordova told me about this scholarship and encouraged me to apply she was a great person to have come across paths with. I had hope again that I could finish school; once I opened my acceptance letter I was relieved, excited and happy Without the assistance from this United Way-funded scholarship I don t think I could have accomplished what I have within these few years, however this was not only for me but for my children and to inspire others by giving them hope. It had been 8 years since I had to drop out of school and decided to go back completing my GED and High School Diploma through another program called Restore Education but because of programs like yours and other nonprofits I have receive two Associates and a Bachelor s degree. I am also happy to announce I will be pursuing my Masters in Education. You honestly do not know the gratitude I have, and I honestly don t even know if I could express into words how grateful I am. Having had to drop out of school was my biggest regret and I always wanted to finish and Now I DID IT!! I hope one day I could be on the other side reading those scholarship letters and making a difference in someone s life like you have in mine. Again Thank you!!
