Partnering to Serve: Opportunities for All Welcome to the Emerald Coast! ACHE South is happy to be in western Florida for this year s regional conference. The planning committee and the local arrangements team have been working diligently to develop a conference program that highlights the strengths and virtues of our organization. As ACHE South members, we are a part of an educational community committed to collegiality, service, and professional development. This year s conference theme, Partnering to Serve: Opportunities for All, is at the heart of what we do as continuing educators. We are often at the center of change within our institutions and within our communities. This position in the epicenter often means fostering collaboration to create access to opportunities in higher education for diverse populations. These partnerships may include connecting an academic unit to a business with a training need, working with information technology units to optimize learning in an online program, or creating a professional development course to help improve community wellness. We also partner with others in our universities to insure compliance with best practices and accreditation standards, achieve our institutional missions and strategic objectives, and advocate for the students we serve. The keynote speakers and the concurrent sessions for this conference have been carefully selected to help members strengthen existing partnerships and inspire new collaboration. In addition to participating in the formal elements of the conference, I hope you ll spend some time getting to know one another in an attempt to strengthen relationships and create partnerships among our institutions. In my view, one of the strongest features of ACHE is our commitment to helping each other learn and grow. Over the last several years, whenever I ve faced a challenge or an opportunity, my colleagues in ACHE South have served as both crisis management team and creative think tank. Because of ACHE South, I am better able to serve my students, my community, and my institution. If you are a new member or a visitor to ACHE South I hope you will find a professional home here as well and I challenge you to become involved with the work of the organization. If you are a long standing member of our community, I hope you ll take time to reach out to someone you may not know and renew your commitment to ACHE. Enjoy the conference, enjoy the coast, and enjoy the collegiality this conference has to offer. Best, Amy D. Johnson Chair, ACHE South

In February 2011, CE s Facebook page was launched and soon after LinkedIn was added to the CE Social

Media tools of outreach. Entering into the Social Media arena allows your institution an added tool with a personal touch and opens the door to endless possibilities! This presentation will review several Social Media resources which can assist in marketing your program or courses, and show the impact of such methods. EXL Scholars: A Model QEP Program of Experiential / Service Learning Dianna Z. Rust, Carol Swayze, Middle Tennessee State University Presided by Laura Ricke, Western Kentucky University Participants will learn how a recent Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) at Middle Tennessee State University was used to combine service learning and academic programs into a national model that is both sustainable and replicable. This presentation will explore the process for incorporating experiential and service learning into academic courses, methods for evaluating the student learning objectives, and the process for students to earn the honor of the EXL Scholars Designation upon graduation. Continuing the Conversation with Dr. Belle Wheelan, SACS Jasmine 11:30 am - 1:15 pm Awards Luncheon, Vendor Spotlight and Door Prize Drawing II April 22 Monday 1:30 pm - 2:15 pm Concurrents II Faculty Favorite Lectures: Connecting the Community With the Life of the Mind David Grebel, Texas Christian University Presided by: Lisa Graves, LSU Continuing Education In the current environment the pressure on non-credit programmers is to create revenue generating professional development and certificate programs. When we succumb to that pressure we may miss the opportunity to explore new offerings that connect the community to the teaching and scholarly activity that is at the heart of a university. This session will present one way a member institution created a program to engage the community with the intellectual life of the university. The session will also include a discussion of underlying principles and an opportunity to discuss broader applications. University of Wisconsin Flexible Degree Initiative Jasmine Gregory P. Trudeau, University of Wisconsin Presided by: Dianna Rust, Middle Tennessee State University The higher education landscape in Wisconsin and across the U.S. is changing very quickly and public higher education is under increasing pressure to adjust to new competitors, new technologies, and new needs while reducing costs. These internal challenges and external pressures require a new approach to addressing important, unmet needs in the state and beyond. (CEOEL Draft White Paper, 2012) In response to this situation the Governor s office made the following announcement in June, The University of Wisconsin System (UW) will develop a new, flexible college option, using

online instruction and other innovative methods, to deliver the competencies students need at an affordable UW price. Led by UW-Extension, the program will feature coursework and assessments overseen by UW faculty and academic staff. This will ensure the quality Wisconsinites have come to expect from the UW, tailored to the needs of today s student. (Office of Governor Scott Walker, State of Wisconsin, June, 2012) Dinner / Evening On Your Own April 23 Tuesday Cyber Security Collaboration Pays Jerelyn Hughes-Glenn, San Jacinto College Presided by: Darla Dye, East Tennessee State University As Cyber security has become the major security concern for both the government and industry, it has also become a major training challenge for community colleges and continuing education. To produce college-trained, industry-ready applicants, it is necessary for the government, the community college, continuing education and industry to brainstorm a new competency based certificate and accelerated degree program. A model exists and is in the testing phase that uses all of these entities to create a robust program. 8:30 am - 11:00 am Registration Open Azalea Foyer 8:30 am - 9:30 am Plated Breakfast, Business Meeting and Giveaways II 9:30 am - 11:00 am Exhibit Area Open Azalea Foyer 10:00 am - 10:45 am Concurrents III Educating Nurse Educators: Build a Better Program through Interdisciplinary Distance Learning Camellia I Kim Luzius, Stephen Tomlinson, Marsha Adams, The University of Alabama Presided by: Marilyn Read, Delta State University The University of Alabama offers a unique doctoral program designed to enhance the skills of current instructors and prepare practicing nurses for faculty positions. This interdisciplinary program combines online coursework with weekend meetings scheduled on campus one

weekend a month. The session will focus on the program s unique curriculum and format which make it a viable option for current and aspiring nurse educators located in the Southeast and beyond. MOOCs: Disruptive innovation or hype? Mary S. Bonhomme, Florida Institute of Technology Presided by: Dewayne Neeley, Western Kentucky University MOOCs (massive open online courses) have received much attention. Reports of tens of thousands of individuals registering for just one of these courses routinely are reported in the media. Companies are springing up daily whose business is to help universities deliver MOOCs. The number of universities offering MOOCs is rapidly increasing. But are the MOOCs a disruptive innovation, one that will change higher education now and in the future. Or are they simply the latest in technological hype? This session will review the companies and institutions involved and present the latest thinking on the impact of MOOCs on higher education. Participants will be invited to weigh in on the debate. Strategically Fitting In Vicki Berling, Debbie Poweleit, Kathy Yelton, Betsy John-Jennings, Kristen Lovett, Northern Kentucky University Presided by: Janeen Winters, Murray State The division of Educational Outreach at Northern Kentucky University encouraged employees to develop their own personal strategic plans. The process included 1) establishing groups of 5-6 employees at mixed levels (student worker to director); 2) plan three small group meetings during May through August 2012 to establish goal setting (each person s professional and personal goals); 3) a final meeting culminating with each employee presenting their strategic plan (5-7 minute presentation); 4) individual feedback to each presenter/colleague in departmental setting; and 5) effective team building. 11:00 pm - 1:00 pm Lunch on your own 1:15 pm - 2:15 pm Keynote II Dr. Vance Burgess and Ms. Cathi Churchwell University of West Florida Camellia 1 and II 2:30 pm - 3:00 pm Conversations with Vendors, Coffee Break and Door Prize Drawing Azalea Foyer

April 23 Tuesday (continued) 3:15 pm - 4:00 pm Concurrents IV How Big is Your Box and How Much Thinking Does it Take? Camellia I Darla Dye, East Tennessee State University Presided by: Michelle McMillan, University of West Florida A prevalent statement is to Think outside the box. As our boxes get larger, and we are encouraged to think past our regions, even globally, an examination of just how far out of the box to think is needed. The presentation will be divided into three areas: 1. Tried and True; 2. In Our Own Backyard; 3. New Horizons. The author Malcolm Gladwell s theory is that it takes 10,000 hours of working on a skill, or talent, to become truly good at it. Thinking past convention and commonplace could be an obtainable skill, serving our students and regions well. Serving High School Students with Multiple Models of Academic Opportunities Dewayne Neeley, Brittney Jones, western Kentucky University Presided by: Rodney Robbins, Middle Tennessee State University The Dual Credit Program at Western Kentucky University (a unit within Academic Affairs and the Division of Extended Learning and Outreach) provides general education courses to qualified high school students, allowing them to start their postsecondary education earlier and at a significantly discounted tuition. Through the various models of face-to-face classes in high schools, classes at a regional campus, and online, the Dual Credit Program at WKU is able to reach a large and growing constituency. Continuing the Conversation with Dr. Vance Burgess and Ms. Cathi Churchwell II 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm Reception honoring Past Chairs Drink Ticket & Cash Bar II 6:00 pm - 10:00 pm Dinner & Dancing! and II

April 24 Wednesday 8:00 am - 9:00 am Plated Breakfast and Remarks from Sponsors 9:00 am - 9:45 am Keynote III Dr. Carol Berry, DANTES 10:00 am - 10:45 am Concurrents V Effective Employee Management: Embracing the Diversity Within the Organization Camellia I Sallie C. Dunphy, The University of Alabama Presided by: Julie Shankle, Florida Institute of Technology Every employee brings a unique set of life experiences that contribute to their knowledge, skill, abilities and talent. It is the employees similarities and differences that make up the group. Diversity is woven into every aspect of the organization. Effective management of employees means learning as much as possible about the employee s communication skills, learning style, career goals, and how they like to be managed. The less you know about your employees, the greater the risk of the organization not being successful. Learn how to develop and utilize an employee survey that can be a valuable tool for an effective relationship with an employee. Partnerships and Possibilities - TTU s Fast Track B.S. in Interdisciplinary Studies Steven B. Frye, Janie Robbins, Deborah Thurman, Tennessee Tech University Presided by: Sarah Banner, University of West Florida In this session we will discuss Tennessee Tech University s Fast Track B.S. degree program in Interdisciplinary Studies. This unique program is a partnership between the university and two regional community colleges to create a continuous 4-year, on-site degree program using 5-week accelerated courses. Presenters will include the program coordinator, regional associate directors from extended programs, and a professor who teaches in the program.
