1 Sheila E. Crowe, M.D, FRCPC, FACP, FACG, AGAF Professor of Medicine. Director of Research Division of Gastroenterology Department of Medicine University of California. San Diego Dr. Crowe is a Professor in the Division of Gastroenterology in the Department of Medicine at the University of California in San Diego. She received her medical degree from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, and completed postgraduate training in internal medicine and gastroenterology at McMaster University. After additional research training in the Intestinal Diseases Research Unit at McMaster University and the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, she joined the faculty at McMaster University before moving to the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston in She was faculty at the University of Virginia from where she served as the Director of the Celiac Disease Center, Director of Endoscopy at the Outpatient Surgical Center, and Director of Faculty Development for the Division. As a clinician-scientist, Dr. Crowe has been active in research, clinical care, teaching, and mentoring. She is named in Best Doctors in America (1996-present), and recognized as one 2011 s America s Top Gastroenterologists and by Becker s ASC 2011 as one of America s Top
2 75 Gastroenterologists. She has served as a medical advisor for disease support groups including the Crohn s and Colitis Foundation of America and various celiac disease support groups. Her clinical interests span from acid-peptic diseases, infectious GI diseases, celiac disease and GI food allergies to IBD and colorectal cancer screening. Dr. Crowe was the GI Fellowship Training Director at UTMB and served as the Director of the UVA GI T32 training grant Since coming to UCSD in 2011 she is Director of the UCSD T32 Gastroenterology Training grant and Director of Research in the Division of Gastroenterology. Dr. Crowe has been active in the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA), previously serving as a member of the AGA Research Committee, the AGA Education & Training Committee, the AGA Women s Committee and an elected member of the AGA Nominating Committee. She served 9 years on the AGA Council including the AGA Council Chair Elect in 2005 and AGA Council Chair from 2006 to 2009 during which time she was a member of the AGA Leadership Cabinet, a member of the DDW Council and a liaison to the AGA Education & Training Committee. Currently she serves a 3-year term as the Councillor-at-Large on the Governing Board of the AGA and in this role she chairs the AGA Publication Committee, is the Editor of AGA Perspectives and serves as a liaison to the AGA Council. She has recently been appointed to the American Board of Internal Medicine Gastroenterology Board. Dr. Crowe is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada, the American College of Physicians, the American College of Gastroenterology, and the AGA.
3 Dr. Crowe served a 4-year term as a member of the Clinical and Integrative Gastrointestinal Pathobiology (CIGP) National Institutes of Health Study Section and terms on the editorial boards of the American Journal of Physiology: Gastrointestinal and Liver, and Alimentary Pharmacology and Therapeutics and the Nature series journal Mucosal Immunology. She is Chair of the NIH Digestive Diseases and Nutrition Fellowship Special Emphasis Panel. Her bench research centers on understanding immune-epithelial interactions involved in inflammatory, infectious, and allergic gastrointestinal diseases. She has received various research grants and career awards including ongoing funding from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases to examine the role of oxidative stress in the gastric mucosa as a mediator of gastric epithelial injury during Helicobacter pylori infection. She was awarded the AGA 2008 Funderburg Award for her research relevant to gastric cancer and named as a 2008 Outstanding AGA Woman in Science. Dr. Crowe is the author of various articles and book chapters, and she is invited often to lecture nationally and internationally in the areas of her expertise including celiac disease, GI food allergies and intolerances, and H. pylori infection. She served as the Director of the AGA 2010 Spring Postgraduate Course. Dr. Crowe is an author of Celiac Disease for Dummies published in 2010 and Consultant for the New York Times Health online section on the topic of celiac disease
4 Dr. Marcia Cruz-Correa completed her B.S. in Biology at the University of Puerto Rico (UPR), and her medical degree at the UPR Medical School. Dr. Cruz-Correa continued her training in Internal Medicine at the UPR, and a fellowship in Gastroenterology & Hepatology at Johns Hopkins University (JHU) in Maryland. Dr. Cruz-Correa completed a doctorate degree (PhD) in Clinical Investigation and Genetic Epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Dr. Cruz-Correa is an Associate Professor of Medicine & Biochemistry at the UPR, Visiting Associate Professor of Medicine at JHU and Adjunct Associate Professor of Surgical Oncology at the MD Anderson Cancer Center. She serves as the Scientific Director of the UPR Comprehensive Cancer Center. Marcia R. Cruz-Correa M.D.,PhD,AGAF Director, Gastrointestinal Oncology Program. University of Puerto Rico Cancer Center Dr. Cruz-Correa s research interests are in the area of gastrointestinal oncology, including the study of epigenetics and genetics in gastrointestinal cancer, hereditary GI cancers, and chemoprevention of gastrointestinal neoplasia. Dr. Cruz-Correa and her team develop the first population-based familial colorectal cancer registry in PR ( Dr. Cruz-Correa founded in 2007 the PR Colorectal Cancer Coalition, a group of community, industry, academia and governmental coalition whose main purpose is to educate the community and the health care providers about colorectal cancer prevention. Through this organization, Dr. Cruz-Correa has organized several community outreach programs and exhibits that have educated thousands of people on cancer prevention. Dr. Cruz-Correa is recognized as a national thought leader in the areas of gastrointestinal cancer clinical genetics, chemoprevention and cancer health disparities. She is member of the governing board of the American Association for Cancer Research, the National Cancer Advisory Board and is immediate past-president of the PR Gastroenterology Association.
5 Amar R. Deshpande, MD Asst Professor of Medicine, Division of Gastroenterology -Department of Medicine. University of Miami Miller School of Medicine Amar R. Deshpande completed a medical degree at the University of Miami School of Medicine. He then stayed at the University of Miami and Jackson Memorial Hospital for his internal medicine residency and gastroenterology fellowship. Dr. Deshpande s principal interest in gastroenterology is the study and care of patients with inflammatory bowel disease. He is also jointly a member of the Department of Medical Education, participating in and helping to coordinate the education of both medical students and housestaff at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and Jackson Memorial Hospital. Dr. Deshpande has authored articles, book chapters, and reviews in journals such as Gastroenterology and the American Journal of Gastroenterology and has had multiple presentations at national meetings.
6 Anthony Kalloo, MD - The Moses and Helen Golden Paulson Professor of Gastroenterology. Director, Division of Gastroenterology & Hepatology. The Johns Hopkins Hospital. Baltimore Dr. Anthony Kalloo is a Professor of Medicine at Johns Hopkins University. He is the Director of The Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Johns Hopkins Hospital. He has special interests in Natural Orifice Surgery, therapeutic endoscopy, biliary and pancreatic diseases and sphincter of Oddi dysfunction. After receiving his medical degree from the University of West Indies Medical School, Dr. Kalloo interned and completed his residency in Internal medicine at Howard University Hospital in Washington, D.C. He completed his fellowship training program at the combined Georgetown University, VA Medical Center and NIH program. He was an Instructor in Medicine at Georgetown University prior to joining the faculty at Johns Hopkins in He was an Associate Editor of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. He is the founder and immediate past medical director of The Hopkins Gastroenterology and Hepatology Resource Center ( a 3000 page multilingual web resource for patients and physicians. He has authored over 150 scientific papers, review articles and book chapters. He has pioneered and has multiple patents including the use of Botulinum Toxin in the gastrointestinal tract, endoscopic cryotherapy and the winged biliary/pancreatic stent. He is the pioneer of Natural Orifice Translumenal Endoscopic Surgery (NOTES), a technique that will enable abdominal surgery without the use of incisions. Dr. Kalloo is a past Panel Chair for Gastroenterology and Urology Devices with the United States Food and Drug Administration. He is the recipient of the 2009 Distinguished Educator of the Year of the Award from the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.
7 John A. Martin, MD, is Associate Professor of Medicine and Surgery and Director of Endoscopy, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Chicago, Illinois, USA. His clinical, research, and medical education efforts and interests are focused in ERCP, advanced interventional endoscopy, surgical endoscopy, hepato-biliary disorders, pancreatico-biliary diseases, transplantation surgery, NOTES, the development of novel endoscopic devices, and interdisciplinary investigation of advanced molecular imaging technologies. He is also involved in interdisciplinary study of new simulation models and devices for endoscopic training and education. With Drs. Nathaniel Soper and Eric Hungness in the Department of Surgery, he is co-founder of the Northwestern NOTES Investigation Group. He initiated the third-tier fellowship program in Advanced Therapeutic Endoscopy at Northwestern, and chairs the Institute for Training & Technology Committee of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE). John Martin, MD, FASGE Director of Endoscopy, Division of Gastroenterology Northwestern Memorial Hospital Dr. Martin graduated from the University of Virginia and the University of Virginia School of Medicine, then served his residency at University Hospitals of Cleveland, Case Western Reserve University. He received his fellowship training in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the University of Pittsburgh, where, under Dr. Adam Slivka, he concentrated in pancreatico-biliary disorders and therapeutic endoscopy. He undertook third-tier fellowship training in advanced interventional endoscopy under Drs. Gregory Haber, Norman Marcon, and Paul Kortan at The Wellesley Hospital-St Michael s, University of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Dr. Martin was appointed to the faculty of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in July, 1997, and joined the faculty of the Division of Gastroenterology at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in 2003.
8 Dr. Surawicz is Professor of Medicine in the Department of Medicine, University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle, and Adjunct Professor of Medical Education and Biomedical Informatics. She is also section chief of gastroenterology at Harborview Medical Center, one of the university s teaching hospitals. Since 2002 she has served as Assistant Dean for Faculty Developed for the medical school. She graduated with honors from the University of Kentucky, College of Medicine in She completed Internal Medicine residency and a Gastroenterology fellowship at the University of Washington following which she joined the faculty in the Gastroenterology Division in Christina Surawicz, MD GI Section Chief, Harborview Medical Center. Assistant Dean for Faculty Development, University of Washington, School of Medicine. Past President of the American College of Gastroenterology. Professor of Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology, University of Washington. Her research has included the role of colorectal biopsy in differential diagnosis of colitis, clinical research on Clostridium difficile infection and the role of probiotics in treatment of recurrent Clostridium difficile, and studies of anal dysplasia in relation to human papilloma virus. She served as President of the ACG in , having served as Governor, Trustee, Treasurer, Secretary, and President elect, among other activities. Subsequently she has chaired the Awards committee and serves on other committees. She was the inaugural recipient of the ACG s William D Carey award in Since 2002, she has been listed in Best Doctors in America and America s Top Doctors numerous times. In 2003, she received a Local Living Legends award, a Congressional award which is part of the National Library of Medicine Local Legends online project.
