6 6 Starting a Business Starting a business is an exciting proposition, but it s also incredibly challenging undertaking. The resources in this guide will help you learn about what it takes to start your business. A business plan is an essential roadmap for business success. Writing a business plan helps other evaluate your business. When seeking investors or lenders; they will want to read your plan before offering funding. This plan will encourage loans, promote growth, and provide a map for you to follow. All businesses require some form of financing. There are many challenges here, but numerous resources are available to help you. Some considerations are start up cost, plan for the initial expense your business will have, know when your business breaks even and when you expect profit, and how you plan to finance your business. You must know your personal finances and credit before starting out on your own. The business structure you choose will have legal and tax implications. Learn about the different types and find the one that best suits your business needs. Choosing and registering your business name is a key step to legally operating your business and potentially obtaining financial aid from the government. To run your business legally, there are federal, state, and sometimes local licenses and permits you will need to obtain. Find out if your business needs to obtain a tax identification number and in addition to the benefits and requirements.
