Melikşah University is currently conducting many research projects with the collaboration of local and national companies and institutions. Although it was established just six years ago, its highly motivated faculty members and strong collaboration with the industry have already helped Melikşah University to earn a rightful place among the top universities in Turkey. According to the ratings published by TUBITAK and the Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology, Melikşah University is ranked 37th of around 180 universities in Turkey in terms of its contribution to innovation, research and entrepreneurship. This booklet gives brief information about the research potential of our faculty members from various faculties including the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, the Faculty of Science and Letter, the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences and the Faculty Law. The booklet provides information on their educational background, research interests, recent works and ongoing research projects. Melikşah University is currently establishing an advanced research center that will further help the University to achieve its goals in advancing research and enhancing industry collaboration. The new research center will have many up-to-date laboratories, equipment and platforms to conduct multidisciplinary research. The problems caused by dynamic factors are of problems that are more confronted in everyday life. Though dynamics problems are more frequent, their solutions are more cumbersome than those of statics problems. This is due to the fact that inertia forces induced by the movement of mass are present in the equations of motion. Additionally, that the excitation forces acting upon the system are not known exactly or these loads vary erratically with respect to time makes the solution of dynamic problems harder. In the solution of problems of structural dynamics and earthquake engineering, two methods are employed; modal analysis and time history analysis. In both analyses, the governing differential equation is solved numerically. In this proposal, a novel direct integration method is developed for the highlighted problem. Proposed method will be based on variation of acceleration in a single time interval. It is assumed that acceleration is second-order polynomial function which is differentiable and continuous. With the usage of this function, fourth-order displacement function and a numerical method whose numerical errors less than conventional ones are to be obtained. Also, properties of this proposed method will be examined in terms of numerical damping, period elongation, and amplitude decay. Stability analyses of method and conditions to stability are to be supplied. The proposed method is expected to be single step, implicit, and unconditionally stable depending on a parameter. 6 7

Taşdelen, A different heat treatment method for longer shaft life, Patent, (Pending) Summary Boron-added high manganese steel samples with free boron in ppm level will be produced. Then, manufactured samples will be heat treated at different temperatures and for different time duration. Thus, optimal tempering temperature and tempering time duration parameters will be investigated and identified for better mechanical properties. Boron-added samples will be characterized with SEM, TEM, Electron Probe Micro-Analyzer (EPMA), Small Angle Neutron Scattering and X-ray diffraction before and after heat treatments. To determine the mechanical properties of the manufactured boron-added samples, tension, bending, toughness, impact and wearing tests will be carried out. In the final step, hammers for construction machines made up of high manganese steel with optimized amount of boron will be produced and tested at the field as an application example. An Investigation on Lifetime and Wear Behavior of Engine Piston Designed and Produced from C/C Composite Materials Granted by; TUBITAK (Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey) Industrial Partner; MINISAN AS Project Duration: / 36 Months Project Budget: 200,000 $ Summary C/C composite made engine pistons will be designed, manufactured, and tested. Pull, push, and torsion mechanical tests will be conducted on the C/C composite made engine pistons. In addition, piston lifetime and mechanical wear properties will also be studied and determined wıth mechanical tests. Initially, C/C composite materials will be manufactured at small scale to optimize the composite manufacturing parameters, and mechanical tests (such as pull, push, torsion, stiffness, indentation based impact, and wear tests) will be conducted on these small samples. In parallel, a piston design will be made by using the Finite Elements Method according to the specifications that will be provided by HBO Motors Company and a prototype C/C composite made piston will be manufactured and tested in an actual HBO engine. Results will be compared and verified with the simulations results. 8 9

The high operating temperatures ( oC) of SOFC enhance the electrochemical reactions therefore improve the conversion efficiency. SOFC can be operated with many fuels such as hydrogen, methanol, ethanol, diesel, LPG, natural gas directly or with a little reforming. The high exhaust temperature of SOFC can allow co-generation which substantially improve efficiency of the system. A SOFC based combined heat and power system will have many subsystems including membrane electrode assembly where the heart of the system and converts chemical energy or the fuel into electricity and heat, stack, reformer, heat management system, power management system desulphurizer, electronic control hardware and software and a cogeneration system. The project aims development of several subsystems with Industrial partner. Measurement and Predicition of Methanol Concentration in a Direct Methanol Fuel Cell Funded by Tubitak Summary Determination of methanol concentration in a direct methanol fuel cell is crucial for design improvement and performance enhancement. Methanol and water concentrations in a direct methanol fuel cell are experimentally and numerically investigated. In the experimental program, a single cell direct methanol fuel cell is developed and an experimental setup is devised to measure methanol and water concentrations and performance of the cell depending on operating conditions. In theoretical program a mathematical model which includes fluid flow, species distribution, electric field and electrochemistry is adapted and numerically solved. The results showed that the performance of a Direct Methanol Fuel Cell (DMFC) is mainly influenced by operating temperature. A large drop in methanol concentration methanol is measured at the inlet section of cell. The mathematical model is found to satisfactorily capture main physics involved in a DMFC

A flexible manufacturing system (FMS) is a form of flexible automation in which several machine tools are linked together by a material-handling system, and all aspects of the system are controlled by a central computer. An FMS is distinguished from an automated production line by its ability to process more than one product style simultaneously. At any moment, each machine in the system may be processing a different part type. An FMS can also cope with changes in product mix and production schedule as demand patterns for the different products made on the system change over time. FMS exhibits a high degree of resource sharing. Deadlocks are a rather undesirable situation in highly automated flexible manufacturing systems due to shared resources. Their occurrences often deteriorate the utilization of resources and may lead to catastrophic results in safety-critical systems. From a conceptual standpoint, there are four strategies to handle deadlocks in automated manufacturing systems: deadlock-ignoring, deadlock prevention, deadlock avoidance, and deadlock detection and recovery. Deadlock-ignoring is employed in a resource allocation system if the probability of deadlocks is tiny and the enforcement of other deadlock control strategies is technically or financially difficult. Deadlock prevention is considered to be a well-defined problem in resource allocation studies. It is usually achieved by using an off-line computational mechanism to control the request for resources to ensure that deadlocks never occur. In a deadlock avoidance strategy, a resource is granted to a process only if the resulting state is safe. In deadlock detection and recovery, however, resources are granted to a process without any check. The status of resource allocation and requests are examined periodically to determine whether a set of processes is deadlocked. From quantitative literature analysis, it is found that deadlock prevention for FMS is investigated extensively and marvellously, leading to a vast stock of results. On one hand, the previous work on deadlock control has built a solid foundation for deadlock prevention research. On the other hand, a highly automated system cannot tolerate the occurrence of deadlocks that may result in severe economic loss or sometimes catastrophic results. Graph theory, automata, and Petri nets are three important mathematical tools to handle deadlock problems in resource allocation systems. Particularly, Petri nets are considered as a popular formalism due to its inherent characteristics. They have received much attention over the past two decades to deal with deadlock problems in automated manufacturing systems, leading to a variety of deadlock control policies. Petri nets are increasingly becoming an important, popular, and fully-fledged mathematical model to investigate the modelling and control of FMS. In general, the following problems are considered in Petri nets based deadlock prevention of FMS: behavioural permissiveness, computational complexity, and structural complexity. Behavioural permissiveness problem is referred to as the fact that permissive behaviour is overly restricted by the deadlock prevention policy, i.e., the supervisor excludes some safe (admissible) states. Computational complexity refers to the time necessary to compute a supervisor. Structural complexity is referred to as the number of monitors (control places) in a liveness-enforcing supervisor. Deadlock prevention under dynamic control specifications, structural complexity, computational complexity, computation of the best permissive deadlock prevention supervisors and the treatment of uncontrollable/unobservable transitions are five major open problems of the Petri nets based deadlock prevention literature, tackled within this research project. The outcome of this research project will be new and novel approaches to solve the Petri nets based deadlock prevention problems in FMS regarding the above mentioned subjects

An Update on the New Computer Engineering Program at UW-Stout, ASEE North Midwest Section Meeting, Duluth, MN October 13-15, 2011 Turkmen A, Pantiskas C, Management of ECG Cables and Leadwires in Biomedical Instrumentation and Technology Journal, Vol.45, No.2, March/April 2011: Summary This research project focuses primarily on data analysis of diastolic arterial pressure (DAP) and muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA). Briefly, for each pair of interpolated DAP and MSNA series, bivariate AR process will be identified through the least square method. Mathematical details of the AR process are detailed by Cooke et al. (2009). The AR parameters are used to estimate transfer functions, and non-causal and causal coherence functions. The estimation method is based on modified parametric cross-spectral analysis. The transfer function contains gain and phase information between the two signals. The gain is ratio of amplitudes of the signals at each frequency. The phase is kind of timing relationship between the input and output signals for each frequency. The coherence is a real valued-function of frequency and ranges from 0 to 1. The coherence function estimates the strength of linear coupling between the two series by revealing if a common signal is present in the two investigated signals. However, the coherence function itself cannot distinguish whether the coupling between the two signals comes from a feedback or from a feeddforward relationship. The causal coherence quantifies the coupling strength separately on the two pathways of the closed loop. The spectral parameters are calculated after switching off the interactions occurring in the causal directions opposite to that under investigation to calculate causal coherence function. Causal coherence function provides a clear idea about which signal is the causing signal and how strongly it affects the other signal. Our primary interest at present is to examine lower body negative pressure data collected in our laboratory, but we do not want to limit to any particular study. We will develop image analysis techniques that will compare electron microscope images of a VLSI circuit with the original layout design and detect possible modifications. I will be working on developing distributed image processing methods on Hadoop distributed file system using MapReduce programming. We will also be working to develop parallel programming methods for image processing using Matlab Parallel Programming Toolkit. We expect the chip images to be in tens of gigabytes in size. Therefore, it is important to develop parallel programming methods for image processing

Then, chemical composition of the surface decorated platinum with a nobler metal (platinum to nobler metal atomic ratio) will be studied. Electrochemical and physical characterization of the synthesized electrocatalyst supports and electrocatalysts will be studied with cyclic voltammetry, linear sweep voltammetry, BET surface area analysis, X-ray Powder Diffraction, twoprobe electrical conductivity measurement, and Scanning Electron Microscopy. In addition, fuel cell performances of these electrocatalyst supports and electrocatalysts will be determined in the single cell fuel cell configuration (via i-v polarization curves). Electrochemical and mechanical characterizations of the mechanically reinforced membranes will be studied with hydrogen gas crossover measurement, accelerated open circuit voltage test, mechanical analysis tests, humidity cycling test, and single cell fuel cell tests (via i-v polarization tests). Electrochemical characterization of the fuel cell stack will be done at different humidity, loads, and temperatures. Investigation of flow properties in natural streams using the entropy concept This paper examines the discharge and velocity distributions in natural open channel flows using the entropy theory. Flow measurements were carried out at four different cross-sections in central Turkey. The mean and maximum velocities at these stations exhibited a linear distribution and the entropy parameter was calculated to be M=1.31. The entropy-based approach presents an attractive alternative to the traditional flow-measurement techniques for the determination of flow properties because of its simplicity and quick application. 2. Determination of Mean Velocity and Discharge in Natural Streams Using Neuro-Fuzzy and Neural Network Approaches The applicability of artificial neural networks (ANNs) and the adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) for determination of mean velocity and discharge of natural streams is investigated. The 2,184 field data obtained from four different sites on the Sarimsakli and Sosun streams in central Turkey were used in the study. ANNs and ANFIS models use the inputs, water surface velocity and water surface slope, to estimate the mean velocity and discharges of natural streams. The study reveals that the ANFIS technique can be successfully used for estimating the mean velocity and discharge of natural streams by using only the inputs of water surface velocity and water surface slope. 3. Calculatıon of mean velocity and discharge using water surface velocity in small streams This paper presents to determine the mean velocity and discharge in small streams using based water surface velocity. For this purpose, flow measurements were carried out at four different cross-sections at eighteen field measurements in central Turkey. Mean velocity (Um) and water surface velocities (uws) at these stations exhibited a linear distribution as Um = 0.552uws which has R2 = 0.99 determination coefficient. The results presented that this method can be utilized to determine the mean velocity and discharge in small streams successfully

Boehnen, An Iris Segmentation Algorithm based on Edge Orientation for Offangle Iris Recognition, Image Processing: Machine Vision Applications VI, SPIE, vol , no. 5, Feb Summary Iris recognition is known as one of the most accurate, distinctive, universal, and reliable biometrics to determine the identity of an individual. However, the accuracy of iris recognition depends on the quality of data capture and it is negatively affected by several factors such as angle, occlusion, and dilation. Off-angle iris recognition is a new research focus in biometrics that tries to address several issues including corneal refraction of light, complex 3D iris texture, and blur. In this project, we propose to improve performance of the off-angle iris recognition by developing a biologically inspired algorithm within a standard iris recognition framework that unwrap non-ideal iris images using a non-linear approach. The proposed method reconstructs the frontal version of off-angle iris images by using an anatomically accurate eye model and ray-tracing techniques to compute a transformation function. We will also investigate additional significant challenges that degrade the performance of the off-angle iris recognition systems. For example, the limbus is the semitransparent region at the border of the cornea occludes a side portion of the iris plane. Without considering the role of the corneal refraction, 3D iris texture, and limbus occlusion together, it is difficult to design an accurate off-angle iris recognition system. This proposal will extend traditional frontal iris recognition methods to produce a new enterprise-appropriate unwrapping algorithm for off-angle iris images based on a biometric eye model by considering the corneal refraction and limbus occlusion on the iris texture

In the information age to become a member of information society, students required to be occupied with informatics knowledge. Based on The Ministry of National s decision taken in 2012, the Information Technologies and Software course is now gradually taught in secondary schools. One of the knowledge, skills and values targeted within the scope of this course is specified as Problem Solving, Programming, and Original Product Development.If students are taught the skills of computer programming and design tools, they will gain learning habits and culture by using the computer with abstraction skills. This project, rather than being a translation of programming concepts pedagogical researches will be used to understand the programming concepts, aims to teach basic programming structures visually with a game format. Students can solve daily life problems that will be appropriate to their age in a game environment with defined structures in the programming language (conditional, loop, function, procedure, etc.). For example; movement problems, pool problems, computational problems in science and technology and social studies. For these reasons, it is aimed to develop an easily understood programming environment in Turkish language with rich visual content support for student education. The project aims to achieve an integrated optical waveguide isolator using the transverse magneto-optic Kerr effect in conjunction with novel resonant-layer effect. The magneto-optic affect is provided by ferromagnetic metals, and ferromagnetic metal-semiconductor composite films will be deposited by sputtering or evaporation techniques.
