1 Advising Information for Teacher Certification Welcome to UW-Stevens Point! If you are interested in pursuing teacher certification, please read this information carefully. It provides valuable information about your advising and class selection processes for today. Early Childhood, Elementary, Physical, and Special Education majors: Students who have already declared one of these three majors, or would like to declare one of these majors today, should attend the advising session offered by the School of Education today. Students who wish to declare one of these four majors after today, should call the School of Education Advising, Recruitment & Retention Office, , and make an appointment to see an adviser. This meeting should take place as soon as possible. You will need to bring a newly printed Degree Progress Report to this meeting. A Degree Progress Report can be printed from your MyPoint account. All other teacher certification majors: Step 1: Students interested in any other teacher certification program should attend the advising session offered by the department of their major. For instance, if you want to teach high school English, you should be advised by the Department of English today. The courses in this guide are specifically required for teacher certification and will impact some of the General Education Program requirements you choose for your first semester. Step 2: Declare your teaching intent in the School of Education. This group meeting typically runs 50 minutes. You will receive a wealth of information regarding teacher certification, including: an academic planning sheet for teacher certification, a School of Education Undergraduate Advising Guide, Professional Education Program application requirements, and Professional Education Program completion requirements. To schedule your Secondary/K-12 teaching intent appointment, call the School of Education Advising, Recruitment & Retention Office, , or visit the office in person, 469 College of Professional Studies. Some teaching majors and some minors have enrollment caps and additional requirements to apply to the Professional Education Program. Departments of these majors and minors are responsible for distributing their policies and making sure students are aware of the competitive nature of their programs. 2 Professional Education Program Teaching Certification Programs The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point offers certification in many majors ( ), secondary education minors ( ), elementary education minors ( ) and add-on areas. Make sure that you are following the requirements for the teaching major or minor in the UWSP catalog. While examining the list of available majors, minors and add-on certifications, keep your academic strengths and interests in mind. Grade levels were realigned by the Department of Public Instruction to age levels for licensure after August Job assignments will ultimately be determined by school districts. License categories: Early Childhood Education Major Minor - Requires an Early Childhood Special Education minor at UWSP Licensed to teach - Early Childhood Level, ages 0-8, regular education and Early Childhood Special Education (~grades PK-3). Elementary Education Major Minor - Requires a 22 credit minor. The minors from the elementary minor column teacher certifiable minors and are highly recommended, especially for those interested in middle school. A list of ALL approved minors is available on the Elementary Education Planning Sheet. Licensed to teach - Middle Childhood through Early Adolescence Level, ages 6-13, (~grades 1-8). Special Education Major Requires a minor in one or two specialties: Cognitive Disabilities (CD), Emotional/Behavioral Disabilities (EBD), and/or Learning Disabilities (LD) Licensed to teach Middle Childhood through Early Adolescence Level, ages 6-13 (~grades 1-8), Cross Categorical and two specialties, OR Early Adolescence through Adolescence Level, ages (~grades 5-12), Cross Categorical Special Education and one specialty, OR Middle Childhood through Adolescence Level, ages 6-21 (~grades 1-12) in Cross Categorical Special Education and one specialty. Secondary/K-12 teaching majors Major - Requires a teaching major in the content subject of licensure and additional courses for teacher certification Licensed to teach - Either Early Adolescence through Adolescence Level, ages 10-21, (~grades 6-12), OR Early Childhood through Adolescence, ages 0-21 (~grades PK-12), depending on availability of grade level.

Natural Sciences Students registered at UWSP during the academic year and who completed 30 credits or more by June 1, 1991, and those receiving a 4 year baccalaureate degree prior to July 1, 1992, are exempt from these requirements. Choose one from each area: _ Physical Science: Any non-biological course that is approved as a Natural Science, or Physics 100 (Physics 100 does not meet GEP Nat. 5 Competencies All students must have the equivalent of a UWSP teaching major GPA is required in the overall, major, minor, concentration, and education course work to student teach. 40 credits of 300 and 400 level credits You must receive a grade of C- or better in all Early Childhood Education AND all Education coursework. Early Childhood Education and Education courses taken more than 10 years prior to student teaching may not be applied to the program requirements. Students may appeal the currency of courses. The ADSOE will convene a review panel of appropriate faculty/advising staff to make a decision about that appeal. A portfolio and content tests are required for certification. Enrollment Caps Some Secondary and K-12 majors and some minors have enrollment caps and additional requirements to apply to the Professional Education Program. Departments of these majors and minors are responsible for distributing their policies and making sure students are aware of the competitive nature of their programs. Certification Secondary Education students will be certified in the Early Adolescence through Adolescence Level ages (approximately grades 6-12).
