2 2 FRIENDS: The Newsletter of the SEAHEC Fales Health Sciences Library 2 A Word From Donna... MEET YOUR Friend s Board Member This newsletter s theme is the value of the medical library. The cover story explains a landmark study of the opinions of 16,122 health professionals, who clearly state that the work of medical libraries saves lives, reduces length of stay, reduces Hospital Acquired Conditions, and saves money for the institutions they serve. Our Friends program has a very supportive Board. This newsletter will feature on three of our Board Members Dr. William Hope and Dr. Betsy von Biberstein and Dr. Jim Hundley on this page. Other Friends Board Members, to be featured in future newsletters, include John Herion and Dr. Praful Patel. This is a time of great challenges and opportunities in our health care system. SEAHEC is reaching out to the uninsured in southeastern North Carolina to help them sign up for health insurance. The SEAHEC librarians are eagerly lending their time and expertise to this endeavor. SEAHEC signed an international library partnership agreement with the Scientific Medical Library at the State University of Medicine and Pharmacy of the Republic of Moldova in Eastern Europe. This appears on page 6. Finally, I warmly thank the loyal Friends of the SEAHEC Library who have supported, strengthened, and expanded our medical library s collection with their generous membership fees. James D. Hundley, MD James Hundley is President of SEAHEC s Friends of the Library Program, Co-Founder and VP of Medical Research at GO2, LLC. Dr. Hundley is also a retired Orthopaedic Surgeon, retired President at Wilmington Orthopaedic Group, PA. His affection and dedication to the library is a result of a life-long friendship with Dr. Robert M. Fales, for whom the library is named. William Hope, MD William Hope joined the faculty at SEAHEC in He is a Fellow of the American Board of Surgery and is fellowship-trained in laparoscopic surgery. He has published extensively. His interests include anti-reflux, stomach, gallbladder, spleen, and intestine/colon, adrenal surgery. His hobbies are travel, sports, and music. He is married and has two sons, Davis (8) and Miles (4). Betsy von Biberstein, MD Betsy von Biberstein is a physician at the Wilmington Ear, Nose, and Throat. She is Board Certified in Otolaryngology. She is a member of the American Academy of Otolaryngology and the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. She resides in Wilmington with her husband, Frank Hobart, who is a cardiologist with Coastal Cardiology Associates and her two sons, ages 12 and 14.

3 3 Sharon presenting her paper on NLM authorities, November, 1983 Sharon in front of the National Library of Medicine (NLM) 1984 A HISTORY OF LIBRARY SCIENCE Sharon Welsh s Odyssey In Her Own Words I have been in the Library profession since 1977, first as a paraprofessional and then as a Librarian. Many significant medical events have occurred over the years since then. In 1982, I maintained the internal subject authority file for the cataloging department in the medical library at the University of Texas Health Science Center (now Southwestern Medical School) in Dallas. I established new subject headings that were used in our card catalog. These subject headings were created by the Library staff at the National Library of Medicine in Bethesda, Maryland, for indexing the literature of medicine. In July, 1982, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, used the term Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) to describe a new disease that they had first reported on in I remember hearing about this new disease and creating a card for it in my subject authority file, anticipating that we would be receiving books on that disease in the future. In 1984, I was working in the hospital and nursing school library at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte, North Carolina. A young woman approached me at the Reference desk one evening and asked if I had any information on AIDS. When I took her to the few books we had, she whispered to me that her brother had AIDS. I later found out that he was the first AIDS patient to be admitted at Presbyterian Hospital. I feel fortunate to have been working in a medical library during this historic time in medical history. MOLDOVA UPDATE! As of December 3, 2013, we have sent a total of 100,000 current medical books and journals to our sister Library in Moldova!

6 6 FRIENDS: The Newsletter of the SEAHEC Fales Health Sciences Library 6 LIBRARY HAPPENINGS SEAHEC Solidifies International Library Partnership SEAHEC is proud to announce it has signed an international library partnership with the Scientific Medical Library of the State University of Medicine and Pharmacy of the Republic of Moldova. Silvia Ciubrei, Deputy Director of the Scientific Medical Library in Moldova in Eastern Europe, Dr. Joseph Pino, SEAHEC CEO, and Donna Flake, SEAHEC Library Director signed the partnership during Ciubrei s visit to Wilmington in May of this year. Our Library has partnered with Scientific Medical Library of Moldova since The library partnership is part of a larger international partnership began by the then NC Governor and the President of Moldova in Since then, many projects arose including exchanges of physicians, and dentists, and medical texts. The library partnership with Moldova has included all the NC AHEC Libraries, as well as the medical libraries at Duke, UNC-Chapel Hill, Wake Forest, and East Carolina University. The country of Moldova has only one medical library, which until our partnership, had limited and outdated Russian medical texts. Over the years SEAHEC and its North Carolina partners have sent 100,000 current print medical books, nursing books, and journals in addition to electronic transmission of journal articles from the NC Donna Receives EBSCO Publishing Customer Success Award for Technology Innovation Donna Flake received the EBSCO Publishing Customer Success Award for Technology Innovation. The award was in recognition of Flake s work with New Hanover Regional Medical Center to incorporate the AHEC Digital Library inside of NHRMC s Electronic Medical Record. EBSCO Publishing offers full-text databases, subject indexes, point-of-care medical reference, historical archives, e-books, and the clinical reference tool, DynaMed. DynaMed is a point-of-care database with clinically-organized summaries for more than 3,200 medical topics. Access within the hospital s electronic medical record lets physicians pull up his or her patient s diagnosis and link directly to the evidence-based medicine description of that diagnosis in DynaMed within the AHEC Digital Library. (L to R) Dr. Joe Pino, SEAHEC CEO; Donna Flake, SEAHEC Medical Library Director; Silvia Ciubrei, Director of the Scientific Medical Library of Moldova medical libraries to Moldova. In May, with Ciubrei in attendance, the SEAHEC Library held a reception celebrating the partnership. She presented Donna Flake with the prestigious Medal of the State University of Medicine and Pharmacy of the Republic of Moldova in recognition of her outstanding leadership with the Moldovan-NC Medical Library Partnership. The Republic of Moldova was established in 1991 following the collapse of the Soviet Union. It is located between Romania to the west and Ukraine to the north, east, and south. The nation is governed by a 101 seat parliament that elects the nation s president. Like many former Soviet Union states, Moldova is working to transition to a modern healthcare system. We are delighted to participate in this partnership which has vastly improved access to medical information in Moldova, and thus improved healthcare for the Moldovan citizens, said Flake.
