8 8 FEBRUARY 2014 / 2 ABOUT NANOTECHNOLOGY Nanotechnology is a subject with an increasing popularity both in science world and industrial environments in Turkey and all over the world. Likewise, it is also on the media and mentioned in the news frequently. In fact, every word with the preix nano becomes important. But what is this Nanotechnology? I can imagine that most people know the nano preix is a unit of measure and equal to one in a billion of meter. For more concrete explanation, we can say that the strand which is the thinnest structure that can be visible to human is approximately nm and the dimension of a water molecule is approximately 1nm. Can we allege that is every small-sized product a nanotechnological product in parallel to the increasing demand for smaller technological products and popularity of nanotechnology? The answer is No, of course. When the size of material is in nanometer dimension, known classic behaviors give their way to quantum behaviors. Physical features present a discrete change; chemical and physical features exhibit extraordinary behaviors as depending on the shape, dimension, atomic structure of nanometric structure and foreign atoms bonding to the structure. One of the most interesting examples is carbon nanotubes. If carbon atoms are arrayed in crystal structure and in different ways, they can be diamond or coal. Carbon nanotubes are the structures that can be formed with the different array of carbon atoms. They have superiorities in terms of many attributes like conductivity, resistance and hardness. Although diamond crystal is a good insulator, carbon nanotubes composed of the one-dimension carbon atom chains can be better conductive than gold metal. Additionally, carbon nanotubes are the most solid materials known. Carbon nanotubes can carry a load 300 million times heavier than their own weight and today they can be used in order to reinforce the steel in construction of very high buildings. Talking about a deinition; it is the science trying to understand nanoscience and new and superior features in nanometric dimensions. Nanotechnology is the technology designing and producing high quality nanostructures, and aiming to produce new functional NEWS FROM THE UNIVERSITY products with those structures. In comparison to other known technologies, it requires basic sciences and theoretical researches more. But it should not be forgotten that nanotechnology has a multi-disciplinary structure and a chemist and an electronics engineer may need to work together for a nanotechnological product. I would like to give some examples from my own studies; I mostly work with aurum (Au) and argent (Ag) nanoparticles. As you know; Au metal in the mass is yellow, Ag metal is in bright metallic color. Au and Ag nanoparticles formed by grouping of the atoms of those metals in the size of 10 nm are in completely different colors in the solution and in sharp, bright and durable color that can never be seen in any paint. While Au nanoparticles are in the color of red wine in their aqueous solution, Ag nanoparticles are yellow. This means that Au nanoparticles have surface plasmon resonance bands (SPR) in 520 nm on the visible area and Ag nanoparticles have those bands in 400 nm. This feature enables the use of Au and Ag nanoparticles in various optic applications. Lithography, biotechnology and medicine are the common areas of use. For example, Au nanoparticles are frequently used for methods of treatment and diagnosis like imaging of cancer cells and burning and killing them with phototherapy. Another area of use with ongoing researches is nanobiosensors, on which I also continue my studies. In the recent history, our project titled Development of Optic Nanosensor Containing Metal Nanoparticles for Cancer Antigen 125 (CA 125) Assay of which I am the coordinator has been approved by TÜBİTAK for support. CA 125 being the subject of the project is the tumor biomarkers of ovarian cancer that is frequently seen in women. The level of this protein increases in blood with the development of cancer. Detection of CA 125 level in blood is of vital importance for early diagnosis and follow-up of the disease. Measurement limits of the clinical tests for detection of CA 125 level in blood are not sensitive enough, and require prior processing of sample, qualiied workforce and complicated devices. In this regard, biosensors introducing such diagnostic tools as high precision, speciicity and reliability step in. It is possible to selectively catch tumor biomarkers with nanoscaled biosensors. These sensors are covered with cancer-speciic antibodies and thereby an electrical or
9 NEWS FROM THE UNIVERSITY 9 FEBRUARY 2014 / 2 optic signal is produced when the antigen spreading from cancerous cell is caught. Au nanoparticles are mostly used due to their biocompatibility. With this project, our purpose is to carry out CA 125 antibody-antigen conjugation on Au and Ag nanoparticles which we made into a homogeneous ilm by storing on glass surfaces, to raise SPR band to high wavelengths accordingly, and to make color change visible which will be caused by CA 125 antigen at the level of nanograms. This means that one day, the diagnosis and follow-up of cancer will be able to be conducted just like pregnancy tests. We aim at completing our project, of which we obtained positive results in preliminary studies, on May We also use Au and Ag nanoparticles in order to increase the eficiency of photocatalysts. What are those photocatalysts? A well-known photocatalyst is titania (TiO2). If titania is exposed to a light with the same energy as band gap, charge separation occurs on it. Those separated charges break down organic pollution stuck on titania and change them into carbon-dioxide and water. So their dirt is removed. Self-cleaning paints and carpets on commercials are the application of this feature. The materials containing titania on their euphotic surfaces can self-clean. However, this feature is limited to a certain extent; as it happens under UV light and only 5% of daylight is UV light. If the band gap energy of titania is equal to broad daylight, we can use this feature more eficiently. We are trying to make titania more active in broad daylight. In our studies, when we combine titania nanoparticles with Ag nanoparticles in certain amounts, we have proved that band gap energy of titania can be shifted to visible area approximately for 100 nm. So we made this function more eficient and this study was approved as an article for international journal. We continue our studies regarding this subject. As you know, we are a university specialized in aeronautics and astronautics and we all have the sympathy and interest for aeronautics and astronautics. Let me talk about the effects of nanotechnology on this subject. The effects of nanotechnology increase in this ield as in every ield. This technology offers functional material to aviation and aerospace industry. Due to the fact that nanoparticles, resistance, tensile strength and corrosion strength of metals being the most important material of aviation industry are very good, it is used in building airframe. Nanoibers, carbon nanotubes, graphenes are utilized as illing material for polymers used in building airframe. Nanocomposites are one of the ideal materials of aircraft industry thanks to their resistance against vibration with their excellent rate of resistance/weight. Boric oxide, silicone and cobalt phosphorus nanocrystals are the crucial elements of coating technology due to their superior corrosion resistance. A current example of the studies in the ield of aerospace: an interesting research which has been considered as a dream until recently but now on the agenda of NASA: Space Elevator One edge will be on the ground and the other one will be beyond the geosynchronous point of the world. Space Elevator is a carrier system thought to be equipped with cables of km length and additional systems. And carbon nanotubes play the biggest role Building such a system was only a dream as manufacturing such a cable in ininite length was impossible. In the future, space researches will be conducted more easily and with lower costs thanks to this elevator that can be built with carbon nanotubes. Important developments take place in our country. For instance, a material highly resistant to space environment was recently developed in a national project conducted in cooperation with ASELSAN. Materials and particularly electronic circuits quickly break down in space environment because of the excessive radiation. Thick aluminum layers used for protection increase the satellite costs too much. Lighter satellites will be able to be produced with lower cost thanks to the covering made with this material. It is a proud for our country to use this technology for the irst time. I hope that such great examples will increase in favor of our country and one day we will be among the countries producing and marketing their own technology. The studies are positive and promising for now. Now we can say that We re in thanks to our scientiic publications, national projects and domestic products. You-as young people- are under great responsibility regarding this matter. I believe you will carry the torch in the best way, and wish you success
10 10 FEBRUARY 2014 / 2 INTERVIEW IF YOU ASK MY TEAMMATES, THEY LL TELL YOU I AM REALLY ANGRY AND OBSESSIVELY CLEAN! COULD YOU PLEASE TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF? I was born in 1975 in the Mengen district of Bolu. I completed my primary, secondary and high school education in Samsun. During my 23-year career as a chef, I worked in 5 different cities and 9 different places. I worked as an Executive Chef in two ive-star hotels. In the last hotel I worked for, I was promoted to the F/B Manager position. HOW DID YOU DECIDE TO BE A CHEF? My grandfather and father were also chefs. Even when I was 10, I used to go right to the kitchen and start kneading dough and cook bureks with cheese and minced meat. I used to like making differences in the cake recipes, trying to create different lavors and feel happy to make people taste them. During the weekends, I used to go to my dad s workplace and try to reproduce the different dishes I saw there. At 25 years old, I became a Sous Chef (Assistant to Chef) and then an Executive Chef at 27. I think I had no choice but become a Chef. IF YOU CRITICIZE YOURSELF, WHAT COULD YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR WAY OF COOKING? Like every other chefs, I am not open to criticism, since I believe I am doing my best. However, if you ask my friends, they will tell you I am really angry and obsessively clean. I always give demonstrations of all dishes in both theory and practice. I deinitely do not permit any action against the rules. WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE STATUS OF TURKISH CUISINE AMONG THE OTHER WORLD CUISINES? Turkish cuisine is the second best cuisine in the world after the French cuisine. It includes options for the tastes of all kinds of people. In the competitions we have so far participated, Turkish cuisine always took an important place. WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE COOKERY AND CULINARY SYSTEM IN TURKEY? Cookery now gained status in Turkey. In the past, it means just cooking a meal. But now, the chef position is the second most important one after the managers in ive-star hotels. The culinary is now a rapidly progressing sector that includes conscious chefs with high cultural and educational background. Many culinary arts academies were established to this date. Associations of chefs are now available. We even participate in cooking competitions together with our Cooks and Chefs Federation both at home and abroad. The cooks committed to their job, especially the young ones, will take this job a step further. WHEN DID YOU START WORKING IN THE UNIVERSITY OF TURKISH AERONAUTICAL ASSOCIATION? I have been working in the UTAA for 8 months. I would like to point out that our rector Prof. Dr. Ünsal BAN provided our university with a brand new kitchen, meeting the hygiene requirements and equipped with high technologies. Therefore, I would like to express my thanks to our rector. HOW DO YOU SPEND A DAY IN THE UTAA? HOW DO YOU DECIDE ON THE TODAY S MENU? I can say that we spend quite a hectic day in the kitchen. Our job has a particular dificulty: We have lots of students coming from different regions of Turkey. Some like their food with sour lavor, while others like it sweet or hot. Some enjoy eating their food with virgin olive oil and some with pure olive oil. Some of them ind faults with the food offered. We normally have a large spectrum of dishes, however in a dining hall where 1300 people eat lunch, it is important both to make it done until noon without losing its essence as well as making it delicious. Therefore, serving foods of large quantity without spoiling their tastes is of utmost importance for us.

Analyzing the grammar and use of words mathematically, this technique can predict with 84 percent accuracy whether or not the book will be a commercial success. By downloading classic books from the Project Gutenberg archive, the scientist were able to ind that a range of factors determine whether or not a book will enjoy success, including interestingness, novelty, style of writing, and how engaging the storyline is, but admit that external factors such as luck can also play a role. They indicated that successful books include heavy use of conjunctions such as and and but as well as large numbers of nouns and adjectives. Less successful books were found to be tended to include more verbs and adverbs. More successful books favored verbs that describe thought processes while less successful ones include too much emotiveness.
