FACING THE CHEATING PROBLEM Samford s Journey from Diagnosis to Treatment Presented by: Azalea Hulbert Samford University
SAMFORD AT A GLANCE Chartered in 1841 as Howard College by Alabama Baptists. Eight schools: Arts, business, divinity, education, humanities & sciences, law, nursing, and pharmacy. 4,758 students (62% undergraduate).
SAMFORD AT A GLANCE: FOUNDATIONAL STATEMENTS Mission: to nurture persons in their development of intellect, creativity, faith and personhood. As a Christian university, the community fosters academic, career and ethical competency while encouraging social and civic responsibility, and service to others.
SAMFORD AT A GLANCE: FOUNDATIONAL STATEMENTS Core Values: learning and responsible freedom of inquiry, personal empowerment, accountability and responsibility, vocational success and civic engagement, integrity, honesty and justice
SAMFORD AT A GLANCE: CULTURE Challenges Many assume cheating is not a significant problem at Samford because of its mission. Many faculty see the procedures for handling academic dishonesty as cumbersome, leading to nonreporting and allowing serial offenders to continue cheating. The institution s image-conscious culture makes it difficult to be open or transparent about sensitive issues, including academic dishonesty.
SAMFORD AT A GLANCE: CULTURE Opportunities Samford s mission provides a clear starting point for conversations about academic integrity. Students and faculty generally support efforts to promote academic integrity because the culture expects ethical conduct. A new academic adjudication process may promote more consistent reporting. Samford s Mann Center is dedicated to advancing students moral development.
THE MANN CENTER Frances Marlin Mann Center for Ethics and Leadership: founded in 2008 as a university-wide entity in the provost s office. Mission: Promote the moral development of Samford students serve as a center of teaching excellence foster a university culture that values productive, moral discourse Programs, development and resources support Samford faculty, staff and students.
STRATEGIES FOR ADDRESSING ACADEMIC DISHONESTY Use ICAI research method to define the terrain and establish a baseline for future assessment. Gain the active support and involvement of the eight academic deans. Work closely with faculty in all schools as communications and educational programming is developed. Enlist student leaders as advocates of academic integrity on campus. Set the tone by conducting interventions with students as they enter the university and its professional programs.
SAMFORD SURVEY ON ACADEMIC INTEGRITY: BACKGROUND The Samford Survey on Academic Integrity was conducted online from February to April, Student response rates were 17% for undergraduates and 11% for graduate students. The faculty response rate was 28%. Students were able to enter a drawing for one of ten $25 itunes gift cards.
SAMFORD SURVEY ON ACADEMIC INTEGRITY: KEY FINDINGS There is no single source of information on academic integrity recognized by students and faculty at Samford. Faculty are generally more likely than students to take cheating seriously, and to think cheating is a serious problem at Samford. There is a significant discrepancy between the number of student respondents who think they would report cheating and those who actually have. Samford s findings are not significantly different from those of other institutions who have participated in this survey.
SAMFORD S ACADEMIC INTEGRITY CAMPAIGN Meetings with faculty in all schools to share research findings and discuss remedies. Development of an online resource center for students and faculty. An intervention strategy for new freshmen, including student-led programs and resources for instructors of freshman classes. Production of videos related to academic integrity, through our Better World Theatre initiative.
SAMFORD S ACADEMIC INTEGRITY CAMPAIGN Ongoing dialogues with students across campus, including Courageous Conversations. Implementation of a marketing campaign to promote integrity in a positive way, involving campus partners such as the University Library. Development of recommendations for a Samford honor code. Appointment of student Academic Integrity Advocates to identify, plan and execute student-focused programming.
ACADEMIC INTEGRITY ADVOCATES Current AIA initiatives: Designing an ad campaign for academic integrity. Developing and assisting with campus awareness events. Speaking in freshman classes. Assisting with the inaugural Southeast Regional Academic Integrity Conference at Samford. Developing video vignettes on academic integrity.
CONVERSATIONS WITH STUDENTS Courageous Conversation: Cheating at Samford (October 2011) Courageous Conversations An ongoing series sponsored by the Mann Center that encourages moral discourse on difficult issues such as cheating, immigration, sexuality, disabilities, and diversity Forums are primarily student-led, and promote audience participation through a system of colored cards Courageous Conversations: Cheating at Samford Purpose: share findings from the Samford Survey on Academic Integrity Audience: primarily freshman who had NOT participated in the survey Format: asked students about several different behaviors from the survey, and whether they were, in fact, cheating; shared findings from the survey
CONVERSATIONS WITH STUDENTS Courageous Conversation: When Winning is Losing How Not to Get Ahead at Samford (September 2012) Purpose: promote a positive culture of integrity Audience: new students only only, during a required freshman convocation program Format: led entirely by upperclassmen, who discussed the value of a Samford degree, the importance of doing honest work, definitions of cheating, identification of pressures that may cause students to cheat, the importance for asking for help when faced with these pressures, and how to respond when a friend is cheating The entirely student-led format and emphasis on a positive culture of academic integrity made this conversation much more successful than the previous year s.
NEXT STEPS Continue working with the Faculty and Student Senates on new approaches to adjudicating academic integrity cases, including the possibility of an honor code. While continuing to devote attention to entering freshmen, focus new efforts on graduate and international students.
