CTTFS Horizon Project: TENIRM Trans-Emission Problems: Emissions grew faster in than in each of previous three decades -- IPCC Assessment Report 2013 Video 21

Emission Reduction Technology Low-SO2 Fuel: Clean fuel supply, green refineries Ship Emission Reduction Design and Redesign: EEDI and EVDI Low-Carbon Shipping and Green Logistics o Fuel switching: Sulfur Emission Control Areas (SECA) o Alternative maritime power (AMP): Shore-supplied electricity at berth (e.g., The use of AMP technology at Port of L.A. has shown an average reduction of 95% in NOx, SOx, and PM emissions per vessel call) Emission monitoring and regulation technologies 22

Clean Transport Fuel Regulation Supply of clean transport fuels: Refinery emission control o Pollution reduction and waste management at refinery Ship Fuel (Bunker) and Marine Diesel; versus Low SO2 Fuel o International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) caps the global sulfur content of marine fuel at 3.5%; But has not been implemented effectively Airplane Fuel: Most consumed and most expensive o LTO (landing and taking off) emission regulation by ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) Land transport emissions: The key to urban air pollution o US started with the first Act on Automobile Emission Regulation in 1955, and PM2.5 regulation in In 2015, mandatory low-so2 fuel switching while in HK port 6/11/

Sulfur Emissions Need to monitor emissions by individual vehicles 6/11/

Technology Innovation on: Ship Emissions Reduction Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI): adopted in July 2011 by the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of International Maritime Organization (IMO), for the reduction of CO 2 emission performance for new ships Existing Vessel Design Index (EVDI ) by RightShip (2011) to calculate an existing ship s CO 2 emissions High efficiency ship engine: Innovation at U Southern California, sponsored by Kenneth Koo of TCC Group (since 2011) Field studies (e.g., DOAS experiments at airports) show: o Actual in-port emissions by marine vessels with same emission profile can vary drastically o airplanes of the same model and year generate significantly different LTO emissions at the same airports 25

Example: EEDI Emission Inventory Calculation The EEDI is calculated using characteristics of the ship at build, incorporating parameters that include ship capacity, engine power and fuel consumption The calculated EEDI is a theoretical measure of the mass of CO2 emitted per unit of transport work (grams CO2 per tonne nautical mile) for a particular ship design. 38 Background 簡 介 Since 2008 financial crisis, assessment of asset volatility under systemic risk has become a methodological foundation for the ongoing global financial reform. IMF now requires SIFIs (systematically important financial institutions) to carry out systemic volatility analysis and assessment. The method of volatility analysis adopted thus far are based on DCC- GARCH models (2012) as developed by Volatility Lab at NYU, led by Robert Engle (2003 Nobel Economics Prize Laureate for his seminal work on ARCH). With Banga donation of HK$2 million, CTTFS Center at CityU of Hong Kong has launched a Laboratory of Real Volatility and Vector Derivatives (RVVD Lab), devoted to computational risk assessment and data-facilitated optimization of industrial assets, especially of shipping and trade industries. By middle August of 2013, RVVD Lab completed development of self copyrighted DCC-GARCH computer software and program packages, and successfully tested and verified with extensive existing cases and databases. Then, by the end of November of 2013, the Lab scientists concluded a case study on Comparative Volatility Analysis of Shipbuilding and Shipping Industries of China, Japan and South Korea, and are expanding the study to other industries.

Circular Economy Hong Kong Going from waste to resource

Circular Economy? The circular economy is a generic term for an economy that is regenerative by design: It solves the waste problem Reduces scarcity of resources Creates social, environmental and economic value In the circular economy waste is a resource All products are re-used or recycled after initial use Waste = Valuable Resource = Wealth And companies move from offering a product to offering services for which consumers use those products Source: WRAP Rethink your business: Do your customers want to own a lamp of have lighting in their house?

Circular Economy! Waste has a negative value in our economy. Smart people would change that into a positive value. In the world of these people, those who manage their waste in a smart way, earn most. The circular economy stands for this opportunity. In order to generate a waste free economy, the following major challenges are ahead of us; 1. How to design and produce products so regain the value of materials? 2. How can waste be seen as valuable by industry and consumers? What technical solutions will help us to regain the valuable stuff out of waste stuff? 3. What new business models can provide the ownership over the parties that will be most effective in recycling materials?

Around the globe a lot is happening Examples from abroad: World Economic Forum: Business leaders in Davos keen to mainstream circular economy 27, January The Guardian Circular economy organisations in several countries connect major businesses, Academia, NGOs, governments and entrepreneurs The first frontrunner multinationals incorporate it into their corebusiness and are starting to demonstrate serious business results The potential is estimated to be huge: The key supporters of the circular held out a prospect of a potential of $1tn in annual savings by 2025 and creating 100,000 new jobs within five years (source: EllenMacArthur foundation & MC Kinsey at the World Economic Forum)

Our Project: Circular Economy of Hong Kong What Investigate the potential of the urban circular economy, and engage How Hong Kong young professionals and companies to capture business relevant opportunities. Educate: build professional expertise Investigate: Research, identify and share opportunities Taking lessons learned from local and international examples into consideration Incubate: develop new business (models) Reaching out to different stakeholders in Hong Kong, Mainland China and abroad Why Stimulating the realisation of the circular economy in Hong Kong: Solving problems for society, Adding value for existing businesses, Incubating innovative start-ups, Helping the Hong Kong government reach its objectives Educating students to contribute to building the futureproof economy of Hong Kong

Project Activity Solution Key challenge Strategic Project Model How to design and produce products so regain the value of materials? How to change perspective on waste from no-value to high value?
