MY FASHION DESIGN PHILOSOPHY My Magazine MY FASHION DESIGN PHILOSOPHY DIALOGUE exhibition MY FASHION DESIGN PHILOSOPHY DIALOGUE exhibition TILAexhibition BUDAPEST DESIGN WEEK MONO ART AND DESIGN, Kossuth Lajos u Budapest, Hungary The textile design students of Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences will participate in Budapest Design Week with Dialogue exhibition arranged together with Moholy-Nagy University of Art and design. The show exhibits their jacquardpatterned knitwear products under the theme My Fashion Design Philosophy. My magazine presents all the textile design philosophy ideas of the students and what they have created for the knitting course in spring Professor Kriszta Remete was also a visiting professor in April at Metropolia University. Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design Budapest (MOME) and Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences have arranged a joint exhibition called Dialogue in Budapest. The exhibition is held from 26 September to 4 October 2015 in MONO art & design- gallery. The exhibition presents knitwear designs of textile design students from the two universities as well as works as a place for joint student discussion. Dialogue is part of TILA exhibition which presents Finnish and Hungarian design for a month in Budapest. The textile design students of Metropolia University will participate in the exhibition with their jacquard-patterned knitwear products under the theme My Fashion Design Philosophy. The photography students Maria Hästbacka, Sanni Siira and Ninni Vidgren of Lahti Institute of Design have photographed the knitwear products. Maria Hästbacka has also made personal photography and multimedia presentation to be displayed in the exhibition. The aim of the knitwear department of the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design is fashion. The department is integrating the students to the professional fashion industry. The main skill of the students is the ability to connect textile and fashion design. They can simultaneously design in both areas. The departments of textile design in Moholy- Nagy University of Art and Design and Metropolia University of Applied Sciences started their student and teacher exchange in Since then, the universities have exhibited student work several times, Dialogue being the seventh joint exhibition. This year the purpose of the co-operation has been the pedagogical development of educational practices through networking and teacher exchange. The MA and BA textile design students of MOME participating in Dialogue exhibition are Agota Grabits, Boglarka Toth-Kasa, Vanessa Vago, Szecsenyi Agnes, Judit Nagy. The BA textile design students of Metropolia University showing their knitting designs are Aino Falck-Immonen, Elina Heilanen, Maija Luoma, Niina Paloranta, Eveliina Pyykönen, Noora Rytkönen. The Dialogue exhibition has been curated by MOME Professor Kriszta Remete and Metropolia Lecturer Tuija Nieminen. 4 5

Linnea Bobacka Geometrica LINNEA BOBACKA LINNEABOBACKA.WIX.COM/LINNEABOBACKA Black n white with a colorful twist. My signature way of using colors is to combine a bright color palette with black, white or gray. Geometrical shapes and graphic patterns reflect my design aesthetics right now. I am inspired by easygoing styles and always aim to create something modern and playful, yet simple and stylish. Everything I do is somehow based on the minimalistic Scandinavian style. PHOTO: SANNI SIIRA & MARIA HÄSTBACKA 6 7

Aino Falck Zoya AINO FALCK-IMMONEN My name is Aino Falck and I m a Textile Design student graduating next year. I found this project very interesting, because we got to design a print pattern for an industrially knitted fabric. We also had the opportunity to decide what we want to make of the fabric. The skirt is a wrap skirt aimed to fit many different body types and sizes. Because it s made of wool, it rarely needs washing and the fabric doesn t stain very easily in general. This makes it an excellent companion for everyday use. The inspiration for my skirt came originally from a type of western culture meets ethnic culture imagery, but the skirt turned out to be more like etno meets folkwear with strong influences from my own fenno-ugrian background. As a Scandinavian designer from Finland, I feel that my Nordic roots are always present in my designs in some way, therefore I feel that they don t need to be highlighted separately. I like to design textiles that pull inspiration from different cultures around the world. If I also manage to add elements from the nature, I feel it forms a perfect combination of things I d like to express in my designs. PHOTO: NINNI VIGREN & MARIA HÄSTBACKA 8 9

Elina Heilanen From the Reef ELINA HEILANEN Designing, for me, is about problem solving for the purposes and needs of a customer rather than my personal story as an individual. I hope to create pieces that can exist independent from any foreknowledge of me as a designer, but also that they reflect what I currently find aesthetically intriguing, and what techniques, materials and colors I wish to explore and combine, and that they create an appealing continuum of my visual mindscape. PHOTO: SANNI SIIRA & MARIA HÄSTBACKA 10 11

Hanna Ikonen Dalmatian HANNA IKONEN Ibelieve design should evoke an emotional response. It must be innovative, beautiful and timeless; These are the main things I try to keep in mind when I start my design process. I also try to incorporate my emotions, memories, experiences and values in it. Designing should be done right and for the right reasons. I believe great design just happens and it cannot be planned. PHOTO: SANNI SIIRA & MARIA HÄSTBACKA 12 13

Tiina Kokkonen TIINA KOKKONEN My inspiration to these knitted trousers came from my interest in mixing different techniques together. I made a pattern where I combined watercolor painting and geometric shapes to give a new and inspiring look to this very traditional product. My idea was to bring something refreshing to the design by focusing on the small details and at the same time give it a hint of Long Johns kind of look. PHOTO: NINNI VIGREN & MARIA HÄSTBACKA 14 15

Matleena Kehus Lunar effect MATLEENA KEHUS Iwould describe my designing as an urban mystical style with a Scandinavian touch. This dress reflects womens empowering journey. The back print of the dress symbolizes metamorphosis between the moth and the full moon which is called Lunar Effect. During full moon all the heroines of the weekday put on their dresses on and let the self-examination begin. PHOTO: MARIA HÄSTBACKA 16 17

Maija Luoma Marble dress MAIJA LUOMA At this moment in my life I get to use the best hours of the day creating, learning and thinking about things that excite me. What could be better? The ideas and visuals for my work usually come from a range of places. It might be a nice color combination I saw months ago in someone s hair, a discussion I had with a close friend, amazing decor in a scifi movie or any other random thing I probably won t even register. The method that I use to make decision about my work is always the same though: The right assignment, moment or inspiration makes these things surface from the inside and they leave a mark in my work in some subtle way. For my piece Marble Dress I wanted to create a surface design that would look knitted as little as possible. I experimented with nail polish and marbling and this is how the patterns of the dress saw daylight. I designed the patterns to hug the bodyshape on its own without any difficult cutting on the material. PHOTO: MARIA HÄSTBACKA 18 19

Niina Paloranta New hair-scarf NIINA PALORANTA Ihope that people enjoy my everyday stories in their everyday life. I have a lot of stories that I want to tell, through my work. I want to create beautiful, modern and interesting design for the everyday life. Inspiration for my works comes from everyday life, moments and nature. I want to use high quality materials and use them in a new and different way. I think that it is important to look forward and create fresh, beautiful and surprising design. For the dialogue exhibition I have designed a scarf named I have new hair. The scarf is designed for a strong and confident person. Inspiration for my scarf came from natural hair that we all have. The hair tells something about the person and their style, they have a story as well. The hair is our crown. The soft material brings contrast to the dark and strong style. I want to do something new and surprising. PHOTO: MARIA HÄSTBACKA 20 21

Eveliina Pyykönen Vihma EVELIINA PYYKÖNEN In life and as a designer, I aim to different similarity. Time has and will change me, but I will always stay the same. Different but similar. So in my designs, I want to follow my own style, but always add something new and different. I breathe in Nordic air and nature. These give me inner peace and feed my soul. It inspires me the most to just wander around and to see, touch, hear and smell. PHOTO: MARIA HÄSTBACKA 22 23

Noora Rytkönen Convallaria NOORA RYTKÖNEN Ilove the traditional Japanese motifs and modern Scandinavian graphic style. In my own designs I prefer light and bright colours in contrast to most Finnish people who only wear black and decorate their homes with white and beige. I want to convey feelings through my work by using the symbolic language of colours which is also why I prefer vibrant colours. I want my work to make people happy, warm and relaxed. PHOTO: SANNI SIIRA 24 25

Hanna Salo HANNA SALO HANNA As a future designer I pay attention to freshness, color and function. There is also room for zany ideas. The world of color is never ending, and you are allowed to play with it; that is my most powerful tool. Combining dissimilar materials in the right ways creates interesting surfaces, textures and feels. I have always been especially interested in decorating and creating atmospheres for different spaces. Everyday innovational solutions and wacky creativity spices up life. When creating this maxi-knit I had in mind the cold and clear autumn. My goal was to make a warm knit for outdoor life. The wool gives cover and feels luxurious against skin. My designing process started with the collar because it is the most important piece in the knit; it creates the modern look for the product. PHOTO: MARIA HÄSTBACKA 26 27

Mira-Liina Skyttäjä Face to face My design bases on a strong and graphic pattern design, simplicity and rhytm. Combination of the sharp geometric pattern design and soft knitted wool surface creates a great contrast. MIRA-LIINA SKYTTÄLÄ MIRA-LIINA.SKYTTALA@METROPOLIA.FI PHOTO: MARIA HÄSTBACKA 28 29
