3 Laughing Dragon Prehistory Lives on in Eura All the information on the life of the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age people are based on archaeological excavations. Archaeologists have been interested in the many Stone Age habitats of Eura, magnificent mounds of the Bronze Age and unusual burials methods of the Iron Age for over 150 years and there is quite a lot of research data available. From the viewpoint of Finnish prehistory studies, Eura is one of the most interesting locations in Finland. Especially the Iron Age of Eura is fascinating: Already in the 6th and 7th centuries AD, burials were only common in the Eura and Köyliö area in Finland. The life and daily routines in the late Iron Age have been studied by using the results of the archaeological excavations. The deceased were buried in their best clothing, wearing beautiful jewellery... The afterlife was prepared by placing tools in the grave. Men had arms and scythes, women a knife and a sickle. Food was stored in clay dishes to serve as provisions for the journey. In this guide, we present some of the sights in Eura, for more information, please visit Prehistoric Guidance Centre Laughing Dragon The exhibitions at the Laughing Dragon (Naurava Lohikäärme) lead visitors to Viking Eura. On display are original grave findings from more than a millennium ago. In addition, there are replicas of objects such as swords, dishes and toys, made according to ancient models. On display is also the first reconstruction of the ancient costume of Eura. Eurantie 18, Eura, FINLAND Tel.: , /naurava Luistari The most famous finding from Luistari is the grave of the Lady of Eura, on the basis of whose treasures the ancient dress of Eura could be reconstructed. The largest burial ground in Finland contains Bronze Age burial mounds, a few replicas of Iron Age graves and information on the region s archaeology. In the summer the site includes an exhibition space displaying the archaeological digs and findings of the area. Linnavuori Linnavuori in Kauttua Eura, is a steep hill rising up from a field. Linnavuori was used to guard the routes of passages during the Iron Age. From Linnavuori, the view expanded to almost all burial grounds dating back to the end of Iron Age. It could be assumed that there were several villages nearby. A signal fire was lit to warn of the danger and the people used to climb up the hill to escape hostilities. Kuninkaanhauta Kiukainen is believed to be named after Bronze Age grave memorials or barrows (hiidenkiuas in Finnish). The King s Tomb (Kuninkaanhauta), a 30-metre-wide and nearly four metres high barrow in Panelia, is the largest of its kind in the Nordic countries. The secrets of the ancient family grave have not yet been completely revealed, since the massive rock mound has not been studied by excavation. Käräjämäki Käräjämäki is one of the extensive Iron Age burial grounds in the area. Judgement stones are still visible here; they were originally a part of Iron Age cremation ceremonies, but legend has it that judgements were passed here in the Middle Ages. The village elders and other venerable personages would handle the villagers disputes, making verdicts and giving sentences. Härkänummi Village Brings History to Life The Härkänummi Village is a village built by the lake Pyhäjärvi surrounded by a pole fence as in the Iron Age.
