COST SAVINGS Savings can be seen before the LIGHTS are even turned on!

COST SAVINGS Introduction: There is a persistent myth in the lighting industry that downlights are significantly more expensive than other less energy efficient lighting technologies like and to purchase, install and maintain. LITON Downlights cost about 10% more than fixtures and 20% less than fixtures. However, that doesn t tell the whole story. You have to look beyond a simple comparison of energy savings and individual downlight costs. When you consider all of the factors, you will find that LITON Downlights are actually more economical in many ways including some that occur before the housings are even installed. On the following pages, we highlight several important but frequently overlooked factors that show significant upfront cost savings. 1. FIXTURE COSTS Fact: Fewer LITON fixtures are required to light a space than or : The light emitting surface area is much smaller than that of and lamps. This allows precise control of the beamspread and the amount of light projected upon the targeted surface. On the other hand, fixtures produce difficult to control, ambient lumen output and poor beam control to the task area. By concentrating the full power of the across the entire area of the beamspread, more light actually reaches the task area. concentrates its output in the center of the beam but then the light swiftly diminishes out to the edge of the beam. also loses control at the outer edge the beam, although to a lesser degree than. Since essentially fills the beam space edge-to-edge, you can plot fewer fixtures to provide the required footcandles to a given task area. Chart 1 illustrates this point: 45 Beam Pattern 45 Beam Pattern 45 Beam Pattern Chart 1: Total Number of Lighting Fixtures Required to deliver correct footcandles in a 50 X 50 space 15 ceiling: (Assuming 3000 lumens per fixture minimum) 16 1 x40w 24 1 x 70W ED17 Constant Color 25 2 x 42W 2. INSTALLATION COSTS Fact: Installing fewer lighting fixtures reduces installation costs: Since electrical contractors typically charge between $40 and $80 per downlight to install. Fewer fixtures mean lower installation costs. Chart 2 below illustrates this point Chart 2: Installation Labor Cost ($40 - $80 per fixture) $640 - $1280 $960 - $1920 $ $2000 3
COST SAVINGS 3. LAMP COSTS Fact: Lamp costs can add to the initial cost of and fixtures: All LITON downlights ship with the s preinstalled. The total cost of the downlight includes the. This is not always true with and fixtures. PAR and ED17 lamps can add up to $70 to the cost of each fixture while fixtures that require 2 lamps to operate can add unexpected costs as well. Breaking a lamp can cause hazardous waste disposal costs and additional labor. Building Maintenance may be required to keep a stock of and Lamps on-hand for quick replacement. Since lamps must be purchased for and housings cost can climb significantly. Chart 3 below illustrates this point. Chart 3: Initial # of lamps required based on 70W and 42W : 0 Lamp Included 24 1 x 70W ED17 Constant Color 50 2 x 42W Initial Lamp cost based on $50 and $12: $0 1 x40w $1200* 1 x 70W ED17 Constant Color $600* 2 x 42W * Lamps costs based on average internet pricing 4. Minimum Additional Materials and Labor Cost prior to Power-up (fixtures not included) Chart 4 illustrates the combined additional costs. Chart 4: Total minimum labor and lamp expenses prior to powering fixtures on: $640 $2160 $1600 You save up to $1500 before you even turn on the power by choosing LITON. 4
COST SAVINGS 5. MAINTENANCE COSTS - 1st Year Maintenance and hidden costs add up fast: LITON lamp life is typically rated for 50,000 hours minimum. High quality lamps usually reach half-life at 12,000 hours maximum. This equates to more lamp purchases and more labor to maintain them. Comparable PAR and ED17 lamps are rated between 12,000 to 16,000 hours and can be fragile adding unpredictable cost factors. Again, lamps can be expensive to replace. Many commercial, hospitality and modern architectural structures have high ceilings. For those that can be reached by ladder there is an obvious liability. For ceilings requiring a scissor lift there are incalculable maintenance expenses in addition to the liabilities. Scissor lifts are expensive to own and operate so very often the operator and equipment must be rented. Depending on what lamp technology is employed, this maintenance must be scheduled 2 to 3 times per year. It may require shutting down an area for the maintenance period or working overtime to accommodate business, personnel or customer flow. Due to the short lifespan of and lamps relative to lamps, they must be frequently replaced. This adds to the cost of ownership significantly. Chart 5 below shows an estimate of expenses after the 1st year of 24/7 operation. Chart 5: Estimated lamp replacement cost after 1st year of 24/7 use: $0 (L70 = 50,000 hrs.) $1200 (12,000 hrs.) $300 (12,000 hrs.) Re-lamp labor cost based on $15 per lamp after 1st year of 24/7 use: $0 $360 $ Total Minimum Additional Materials and Labor costs after 1st year of 24/7 use: Since LITON has an L70 projection of 50,000 hrs, there are no lamp or re-lamp material or labor costs. The only costs are for initial installation and the energy consumed. See Chart 6. Chart 6: Total minimum material and labor costs after 1st year of 24/7 use: $640 $3720 $2650 5
COST SAVINGS 7. ENERGY COSTS Energy Costs continue to SKYROCKET with no end in sight. This is the most obvious, unpredictable cost of inefficient lighting. LITON simply consumes less energy than any other comparable light source. Chart 7 below compares electricity costs between, and : Chart 7: Average input Watts per fixture including ballast and driver: 44W 1 x 40W 80W 1 x 70W ED17 Constant Color 94W 2 x 42W Average annual kwh cost per fixture ($0.10 kwh) 24/7 use: $35.04 $70.08 $82.34 Average annual energy cost to light 50' x 50' space with 15' ceiling: $ $ $2058 6
COST SAVINGS 8. Total 1st Year Combined Cost to Light 50 X 50 space w/ 15 Ceiling: Plain and simple 1st year costs are much lower for Downlights than for or. Even when you factor in price differences between downlights and the older technologies, you still come out ahead and the good news is that your savings grow exponentially year after year. Chart 8 below illustrates this point. Chart 8: Total 1st year expenses in addition to the actual cost of the lighting fixture: $1200 $5402 $4708 Total 1st year savings over and with : vs $ % vs $ % CONCLUSION Using LITON Architectural Downlights in applications with ceilings higher than 15ft. provides instant savings over and downlights, when the additional costs of more fixtures, additional labor and lamps are factored in. The savings continue to grow exponentially in the form of lower energy and maintenance costs once the building or space is occupied. 7
