PDX INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY MASTER PLAN Introduction Project Timeline Status/Accomplishments to Date System Inventory Infrastructure Applications Interviewed 37 PDX/PoP Staff Reviewed System Documentation Identified 55 systems applications to date 30 systems supported by IT PDX 25 systems supported by PoP IT staff Today s Agenda 3 Sessions on IT Infrastructure Existing Communications Infrastructure Industry trends and best practices Recommendations 1 Session on ITS Infrastructure Considerations 2

ITS Infrastructure Topics Issues and considerations Technical overview and trends Primary focus for ITS infrastructure Regional ITS resources/infrastructure Specific ITS consideration for PDX Follow-up considerations 3

ITS Issues and Considerations Differences between ITS and IT: ITS is an element of the overall IT Master Plan, which focuses on airport access and circulation ITS does not have the same business implications as IT: ITS is a set of management tools for landside and related operations, but is not a business by itself No leasing opportunities with ITS elements ITS does not necessarily generate new revenues Communications with external transportation agencies should be considered due to the nature of a patron s trip What information/controls will PDX share? What are the regional standards and protocols? 4

ITS Technical Overview and Trends Trends in airport ITS technology Trends in the ITS industry Changing from independent to integrated systems Introduction of standards Pro-active operations management Exchange of data to support regional coordinated decisions 5

ITS Technical Overview and Trends Trends in Airport Technology Automatic vehicle location systems AVI/RFID GPS Developing universal protocols Parking control systems Pay-on-Foot (POF) & License Plate Recognition (LPR) Credit card in/credit card out PDAs to permit processing in exit lanes Use of cellular phones for payment Displays of parking space availability At airport entrance (by facility) At facility entrance (by level or sector) Above individual spaces (BWI and Europe) 6

ITS Technical Overview and Trends Trends in Airport Technology (continued) More sophisticated parking rate structures Fees vary by time of day or day of week Discounts (or penalties) for long-durations Reserve spaces through use of the: Internet (U.K. airports and Amsterdam) Telephone Other Parking products serving specific markets: Reserved spaces with AVI or mag. card access Valet parking services AVI access linked to regional clearinghouse Taxicab dispatch systems Highway advisory radio Variable message signs 7

ITS Technical Overview and Trends Trends in Airport Technology (continued) 8

ITS Technical Overview and Trends Independent vs. Integrated Systems Independent systems Independent silos control and manage data Generally proprietary systems Inability to share data and get overview of conditions Integrated systems Information shared on real-time basis Provides opportunity to pro-actively manage system as opposed to separate components Multiple users can have access to data and control of equipment at one or more locations Changing from an independent to an integrated deployment Requires introduction of standards Involves centralized processing 9

Primary Focus of ITS Applications Data collection Field devices Other regional operators Data processing Operational (real-time) Planning Design Information dissemination Support operational decisions Support traveler decisions 10
