Suicides in Guilford Guilford Police Department From January 1, 2009 through December 31, 2013 Guilford had 7 suicides and 282 attempted suicides.
Guilford Youth & Family Services applied for the Suicide Mini-Grant To strengthen our abilities in the following areas: 1. Assemble a coalition with wide sector representation to prevent suicide, suicidal behaviors and promote mental health in our community. 2. Offer QPR training to gatekeepers in the community to enhance their ability to recognize a crisis and warning signs of someone contemplating suicide. 3. Improve our postvention abilities.
TASK FORCE Guilford Youth & Family Services Parks & Recreation Mental Health Provider and Community member Guilford High School Social Worker Guilford Police Department Juvenile Probation-South Central Region
Initiatives 4 hour Connect Suicide Prevention-Intervention Training Met as a task force and implemented the following based on community need: QPR Training Suicide Postvention Training Promotion of the One Word, One Voice, One Life: Be the One to Start the Conversation campaign
QPR TRAINING 24 Community Members 100 Guilford High School faculty and staff 27 Pediatricians/Nurses in community (83% of people who have died by suicide have seen their primary care provider within 3 months.cdc ) 10 District wide nurses
Postvention Training Attendees Guilford Youth & Family Services- Clinical Director Program Director Guilford High School Dean of Students 2-Social Workers Guidance Department Chair 2-School Counselors Nurse School Psychologist Guilford Police Department Officer
Suicide Postvention Training High School has a fantastic crisis response team. To enhance communication with families, students, school and whole community regarding suicide. Support to school counselors. Provide follow-up after the immediate crisis. Memorials. Funerals. At risk youth.
Communication School to send information and resources out to families about the death. Can be described as an unexpected sudden death This can be done through blasts and phone message blasts (excluding family of deceased). Utilize this communication to inform families of drop in center locations. Communication should also include how people will learn of services when made available.
Communication blast should include links on grief and loss, tips for parents and attending memorials with children. Increase ability to get resources to all youth through Twitter and Instagram. Utilize Facebook for parents/adults. Be mindful of getting resources to school staff including bus drivers, cafeteria workers, coaches, etc. Resource information to be put in teachers lounges, cafeteria, restrooms. Information regarding EAP access for employees should be posted.
Youth Support If suicide/sudden death happens on a weekend provide grief counseling and resources immediately. This can be done at GY&FS and/or the high school, if possible. Once crisis center at high school closes. GY&FS to offer grief counseling support at high school and/or GY&FS.
Reach out to Youth Develop a protocol to reach out to kids that don t seek help. Provide youth who do not want to talk an opportunity to express their feelings in other physical and creative ways. Utilize these techniques as a starting point to increase dialogue.
Support to frontline staff Guilford Youth & Family Services to offer support to social workers and school counselors who are handling immediate crisis. Check in with frontline administrators to provide support as needed.
Memorials Encourage school policy across the board regarding memorials so they are consistent and fair. What you do for one you do for all, regardless of how one died. Memorials should be time limited and something that can be put away or given to family. Permanent memorials are against best practice.
Funerals Provide support to family to help ensure that funeral/memorial service can meet needs of grieving youth. (i.e. parent available to accompany their child to service). Hold service/memorial in the evening. Ask daycare providers to open doors for young siblings so parents can attend service with their teen. Work with family during this difficult time to ensure that funeral/memorial service does not glorify the death of student to reduce risk of contagion.
Media Work proactively with media before a crisis occurs. Arrange suicide postvention training for local media. This is to reduce risk of contagion and ensure that messaging is appropriate and does not glorify suicide.
Prevention Provide resource information to community on a regular basis - not only during a crisis. Suicide Prevention Month post resources on school website, submit letter to local newspaper that identifies risk factors, warning signs and resources. Hold community forums on mental health topics to promote mental health wellness on a regular basis.
