3 Introducing... the foundation years The transition from medical student to consultant can be a long, but extremely rewarding pathway. It sees you progress from student to foundation doctor, to specialty trainee before finally being awarded your certificate of completion of training (CCT) and taking up your first consultant post. The early years of your medical career are an ideal time for setting your foundations and building your support network. Over the next few years you will have opportunities to explore different specialty areas of medical and surgical training and find the one that best suits you. You should make the most of these years: Find out as much as you can about the different specialties Speak to and learn from consultants and specialists working in the profession Make the most of the range of awards and scholarships on offer to help expand your experience and expertise Take advantage of resources available to you at your university, hospital and Royal College Don t get caught out financially: know what to expect, and when For more info visit us at: 0.3
4 CORE AND SPECIALIT TRAINING Learn/Achieve/Network/Engage/Advance What to expect The two years that follow graduation from medical school are known as the Foundation Years. At the end of Foundation year 2 (FY2) many doctors will progress to Specialty Training in a medical or surgical specialty. Others may decide to work in General Practice or complete an academic training programme. On completion of FY2, you will receive a Foundation Achievement of Competence Document (FACD), which is required for progression to Specialty Training. The application process for Specialty Training commences during FY2. 5 If you choose to progress to the early years of Specialty Training (ST1/ST2), sometimes called Core Training (CT1/CT2), you will work towards your MRCP(UK) or MRCS examinations you are required to sit these exams before you progress to the later stages of specialty training. These examinations are typically completed at the end of the second year of specialty/core training. These membership examinations are the minimum requirement to become a Member of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow and mark a major milestone in your career. 6 Learn/Achieve/Network/Engage/Advance Introducing Our College The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow is the only Royal College reflecting the real life, multidisciplinary approach to patient care. Our membership of more than 10,000 physicians, surgeons, dental practitioners, travel medicine and podiatric medicine specialists makes us a very powerful voice across education, examination and influence. Also, because we are not tied into running courses and information sessions for physicians only or surgeons only, it can be of real benefit to young doctors who have not yet fully committed to a medical or surgical specialty and are still going through foundation year hospital rotations. Whether you choose to specialise in medicine or surgery, or have yet to decide, membership of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow is available to you at every stage of your career from undergraduate medical student right through to consultant. Download an application form here: I used my College travel scholarship to spend a period of research at the University of Oxford. This work would not have been possible without the support of the College. I am tremendously grateful and encourage other junior College Members to apply Dr Terence Quinn, Lecturer in Geriatric Medicine and Member of the College 0.6 Introducing the Foundation Years

12 Learn/Achieve/Network/Engage/Advance Network The power of networking should not be underestimated. Much knowledge can be gained from your peers, while putting yourself out there and getting yourself known can open new opportunities. Be seen We run a range of symposia and events throughout the year focusing on specific specialty areas, such as cancer or paediatrics. Many of these are CPD-based events and provide a great opportunity to network with professionals working in specialist areas of medicine or surgery, while building CPD for your portfolio. We also hold a number of social events throughout the year, which provide an opportunity to mix with your peers in a more relaxed, informal setting because sometimes the best relationships are built over a drink! You don t need to live in Glasgow to make the most of your membership. We have regional advisors located throughout the UK, who are there to support you throughout your training. They also run events in locations across the UK, providing opportunities for you to network with like-minded colleagues close to home. Be heard Our Trainees Committee welcomes young doctors and surgeons across the spectrum from undergraduates to those in the later stages of specialty training. The Committee plays an important role in the College by helping to influence and guide education and training to suit your peer group. Membership of the Committee will give you a voice in shaping the future of the profession. Opportunities to join other committees, such as the Membership Services Board, are also available and provide a chance for you to get involved and really make a difference in College life Introducing the Foundation Years
