2 KCAI s School for Continuing and Professional Studies provides art and design classes ranging from digital animation to traditional life drawing for ages 6 through adult. The school also offers special opportunities for art educators, high school students thinking about majoring in art or design and professionals interested in fine arts, multimedia studies, graphic design and photography. The youth program invites students to explore ARTventure, the Kansas City Art Institute s summer art camp for ages As always, student can create their own ARTventure by choosing a different medium to navigate each week of camp. There are many new classes on this summer s schedule! 3 AGES 6-8 ARTVENTURE SUMMER CAMPS Ages 6-14 Cost: $135 per class, per week Please wear art friendly clothing. Supplies provided. During the Kansas City Art Institute s ARTventure summer camps you will be encouraged to think and create in new and different ways. KCAI is Kansas City s nationally recognized art and design college so you ll learn from the best. Join us for the morning, afternoon or stay with us all day! Supervised Noontime and the After Art programs are priced separately (see prices below.) Supervised Noontime (offered each week) Cost: $50 per week For an additional cost we offer a supervised lunch period with activities. Students need to bring a non-perishable lunch and beverage each day. This option is FREE for those students that sign up for the morning and afternoon sessions of the same week. After Art (offered each week) Cost $75 per week After Art is being offered from 3-5 p.m. each day for an additional cost. This two-hour extension care program keeps kids engaged through creating collaborative projects until parents are able pick them up. The program will build day to day, finishing on Friday. ARTIST IN TRAINING CERTIFICATE The School for Continuing and Professional Studies wants to encourage our younger students to pursue their artistic interests. For more information visit our website at or call Scholarship applications must be postmarked by April 10, Week 1: June 8-12 Monday-Friday Eye Spy NEW From mission-led lessons to sketchbook scavenger hunts, students will spend their time discovering the tools and tricks of drawing. Students will learn how to create and use their own viewfinder tool to help them see interesting compositions in the everyday and will leave with a sketchbook full of their fantastic findings. Creative Collaborations NEW Looking to artist collaborators like Christo & Jeanne-Claude and Andy Warhol & Jean-Michel Basquiat for inspiration, students will partner each day to create their own collaborative works. Students will discover new creative processes through team building exercises and the class will place emphasis on the art of sharing. Week 2: June Monday-Friday Painting Nature NEW Drawing FUNdamentals Observant and love nature? Students will work outside and in the classroom focusing on different painting techniques. Utilizing still lifes and the landscape, students will build a basic understanding of color theory through mixing and layering the medium. Discover the fundamentals of drawing. This class will explore a variety of mediums including graphite, crayon and colored pencils. Students will experiment with various tools for observing and creating, enabling a basic understanding of drawing. Week 3: June Monday-Friday Runway Fashion NEW Learn all you need to know to create one-of-a-kind garment designs. Share your fashion genius! Students will learn how to draw, document, and make their ideas reality by creating a head-to-toe look. On Friday students will walk the runway to showcase their design. Line Expedition NEW Painting FUNdamentals NEW Discover the fundamentals of painting and color theory. Students will experiment with tempera and watercolor paints while developing an understanding of the different techniques used with each. Tooning Around NEW Looking to landscapes of Vincent Van Gogh and David Hockney for inspiration, students will focus on exploring the element of line while creating original artwork of their own! Experimenting with wet and dry media, students will hone their mark making abilities in a studio classroom. Week 4: July 6-10 Monday-Friday Collage and Beyond NEW Cut, paste, repeat! Utilizing magazines, their own drawings and an endless variety of found materials, students will explore the process of collage. Masters of the medium like Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso will serve as inspiration and a starting place for the endless possibilities of this flexible process. Week 5: July Monday-Friday Sculpture FUNdamentals Build sculptures while experimenting with a variety of materials including but not limited to: wire, paper and air-dry clay. The class will begin by discussing the abilities of each material and then construction will begin. Create and develop cartoon characters! After learning a variety of illustration styles and techniques students will storyboard and draw their own cartoon strip! Week 6: July Monday-Friday Drawing FUNdamentals Discover the fundamentals of drawing. This class will explore a variety of mediums including graphite, crayon and colored pencils. Students will experiment with various tools for observing and creating, enabling a basic understanding of drawing. Big, Small, Tiny, or Tall! NEW Students will learn how to make something big into something small and vice versa! Making drawings that are either larger than life or miniature will introduce students to new ways of thinking about art. 3 4

Animation FUNdamentals Make your drawings come to life by developing your own animation shorts. Students will create characters and utilize the Adobe Suite in the Mac lab to make an original animation. Bring a 4GB flash drive to class. Pattern Expedition Looking to artists like M.C. Escher, Andy Warhol and Yayoi Kasama for inspiration, students will focus on exploring the principle of repetition while creating original 2D and 3D artwork of their own! Using a variety of wet and dry media, students will flex their imaginations by creating geometric tessellations and organic patterns in a studio classroom. Drawing FUNdamentals This class will explore a variety of mediums including graphite, crayon and colored pencils. Students will experiment with various tools for observing and creating, enabling a basic understanding of drawing, the foundation for all visual art. Photo Collage NEW Manipulate your photos to create futuristic landscapes or abstracted characters! Students will take photography field trips to find content that inspires them. In the Mac lab students will then edit, combine, and digitally transform their images. Bring a digital camera and 4GB flash drive to class. Digital Drawing NEW Using wacom tablets in the Mac lab, students will learn how to transpose their drawings digitally. Working with the Adobe Suite students will manipulate their drawings by exploring depth, color, and texture. Bring a 4GB flash drive to class. Perfect for the student interested in taking editorial-style portraits! Utilizing one another as the subject, students will learn how to frame and light people to capture a perfect portrait. Students will end each day in the Mac lab learning how to touch up and edit their photos. Bring a digital camera or DSLR and 4GB flash drive to class. Claymation Movies Print, Rinse, Repeat! Create an original animation to take home and share with friends and family. Students will write a short scene, create a corresponding storyboard and build clay characters. Finally, students will build the sets and video their characters in action. Students will be able to access their videos online at the end of class. Learn the fundamentals of printmaking! While learning about the history of print, students will use ink and mixed media to learn how to create collographs, monotypes and produce an original series. At the end of class students will then learn how to sign and edition their prints and discuss their work as a class. Students will be working with inks, so please wear art friendly clothing. Week 4: July 6-10 Monday-Friday Making to Music Photography FUNdamentals Animation FUNdamentals Week 5: July Monday-Friday Make your drawings come to life by developing your own animation shorts. Learn all you need to know to create a one-of-a-kind garment to show the world your genius! Learn how to draw the fashion figure, create inspirational mood boards of your design concepts and make your ideas a reality by creating a head-to-toe look out of fabric and other materials. On the last class, friends and family are invited to attend the fashion show, where students will walk the runway in their original design! Telling Heroic Stories NEW Exploring the beats and melodies of different songs, students will create original work inspired by what they hear. Students will work collaboratively and independently to understand how different art mediums and music styles can influence their work. Discover how to take a dynamic photo. Is he/she/it going to save the planet or perhaps the whole solar system? Anything is possible in this class as students learn to illustrate their original narratives from start to finish. Character development, storyboarding and creating a setting are just a few of the creative processes that will be covered. Mastering the Miniature NEW Break out those magnifying glasses! Students will be introduced to a new way of thinking about art by exploring what it means to make something miniature. Looking at the tiniest of artworks like Persian miniature paintings or itty-bitty portraits that can be found in illuminated manuscripts, students will be inspired to create the small-scale sculptures, drawings and paintings of their own. Claymation Movies Create an original animation to take home and share with friends and family. Students will write a short scene, create a corresponding storyboard and build clay characters. Finally, students will build the sets and video their characters in action. Bring a 4GB flash drive to class. Painting in 3D NEW Students will improve their ability to paint from observation through alternative processes like painting on three-dimensional objects. Students will stretch their expectations and learn the basics of perspective by painting from their original sculptures. 5 6

5 Animation Fundamentals AGES Week 1: June 8-12 Monday-Friday Make your drawings come to life by developing your own animation shorts. Students will create characters and develop a basic understanding of image editing software (After Effects, Flash and Photoshop) to create an original animation. Bring a 4GB flash drive to take your animations home. Exploring the Landscape NEW Students will venture outside to draw in plein-air. Walking as a class to surrounding parks and museum sculpture lawns will serve as inspiration and allow students the opportunity to develop their ability to draw from observation. Learning how to choose exciting compositions each day will be the primary goal of this course. Photography Fundamentals Week 2: June Monday-Friday Drawing Faces and Figures NEW Take control of your digital camera by learning to move past the point-and-shoot mentality. Students will learn to frame a shot, perform basic image editing and to manipulate light in different environments. Bring a digital camera or DSLR and the instruction manual to class. Painting Fundamentals Develop your understanding of color theory while using a variety of paint mediums. Students will try their hand at acrylic and watercolor paints while discussing the significance of each medium throughout art history. Don t be intimidated about drawing faces and figures - we ll show you how. Learn to break down the human form into simple shapes and proportions. Clothed models will pose for you to draw in charcoal and conte. Exploring Animation NEW This class emphasizes the alternative and less traditional processes of animation. Working with Wacom tablets in the Mac lab students will experiment with a variety of image making methods while exploring the intuitive nature of the medium. Bring a 4GB flash drive. Experimental Photography NEW Abstraction Fundamentals NEW Discover the secret to creating unique digital images. Students will take field trips around campus to learn how to find and capture alternative subject matter for creating complex compositions. They will then work in the Mac lab using Adobe Photoshop to manipulate their images and learn techniques for manipulating light sources to enhance their work. Bring a digital camera and 4GB flash drive to class. Pulling from found color palettes, textures and observed compositions students will use what they discover as inspiration for creating advanced abstract paintings. Students will work with a variety of wet media including: acrylics, watercolor and oil pastels. Week 3: June Monday-Friday Mastering the Multiple NEW Learn about the history of printmaking while understanding the tools needed for the carving surfaces for creating prints. In a studio classroom using ink students will produce an original printed series, learn how to sign and edition their work like professional printmakers, then critique the final product. Traditional Animation NEW Learn how to make your art move! Beginning with the history of animation and unveiling animators original processes, students will learn to work hands-on to bring their own art to life! Whether you enjoy the narrative or the experimental, this course offers the ability to create highly engaging work in the field of animation. Staged Photography NEW Fiber Fundamentals Set the stage for your own photos using original props and a professional light kit! Students will be encouraged to consider a narrative theme for their photos, elevate their story with hand-made props and work in the Mac lab using Adobe Photoshop to edit their final photos. Bring a digital camera and 4GB flash drive to class. Students will work in the studio creating original textiles and fiber art objects. Exploring the historical and contemporary significance of garment construction students will practice weaving, hand sewing and surface design techniques. Week 4: July 6-10 Monday-Friday Creating a Zine NEW Animation Fundamentals Make your drawings come to life by developing your own animation shorts. Students will create characters and develop a basic understanding of image editing software (After Effects, Flash and Photoshop) to create an original animation. Bring a 4GB flash drive to class. Week 5: July Monday-Friday Discover what it takes to compose, write and publish your own zines! Students will explore different methods for creating these original self-published booklets of original artwork and text while practicing a variety of processes including collage, hand lettering and collaborative problem solving. Impressions of Summer NEW Exploring Animation NEW The impressionists found exciting ways to depict their interpretations of the real world. Artists like Manet, Monet, and Degas combined traditional drawing skills with the experimental use of colors and expressive mark making. Students will pull inspiration from the environment to create impressionist-influenced paintings of their own. This class emphasizes the alternative and less traditional processes of animation. Students will explore the elements and principles of design within their work and final pieces will be created on canvas board. Students will practice painting from still lifes and landscapes to learn to paint representationally. Students will develop foundational skills like framing compositions, creating underpaintings and color mixing before creating a larger finished piece. Students will experiment with several types of paint including, acrylic, watercolor and oil pastels. Set the stage for your own photos using original props and a professional light kit! Students will be encouraged to consider a narrative theme for their photos, elevate their story with hand-made props and work in the Mac lab using Adobe Photoshop to edit their final photos. Bring a digital camera and 4GB flash drive to class. Drawing Fundamentals Strengthen your drawing capabilities. Students will review the significance of drawing in art history, practice drawing from observation and dig deeper into the concepts of color theory and the elements and principles of design. 7 8

6 PRE-COLLEGE ART LAB JULY 5-24, studios are painting, animation, illustration, and photography. The Kansas City Art Institute s Pre-College ArtLab (PCAL) is a three-week residency program for high school students, freshmen through graduating seniors. If you are accepted as one of our PCAL students, you will choose a studio major and a liberal arts course which, combined with an intensive life drawing course, will help you discover first hand the focus and commitment it takes to be an artist. Visit for more information. HIGH SCHOOL High school classes are offered year-round at the Kansas City Art Institute. All classes give fine art instruction while working with any skill level. Classes align with the KCAI Foundation Year and are designed to give a preview of what art school life is like. Studio classes in ceramics, fiber, sculpture and woodworking take place in the collegiate studio space. Each semester, select courses are offered for one hour of college credit with an additional fee. This semester, Portfolio Preparation is offered for credit. Students are encouraged to take credit classes in sets of three; three hours of college credit are typically equivalent to one college class. Questions about credit? Call Landscape Drawing June week 9 a.m. noon $169 $25 fee Each day, the class will venture outside to draw the environment: natural and man-made. Students will learn composition, proportion and value through the study of visual relationships. Each class will conclude with a critique so students can strengthen their skills each day. Supplies included. Sculptural Furniture June week noon to 4 p.m. $429 $100 fee Spend two weeks in the sculpture studio at KCAI creating in fire and metal. Learn how to weld steel with basic methods, using MIG and gas technologies. You will create a piece of sculptural furniture using skills taught. No experience is necessary. Be dressed and ready to learn safety: closed toed shoes, long sleeves, long pants and no hanging jewelry. Supplies included. Figure Drawing June week noon to 4 p.m. $219 $45 fee Learn to work from observation by studying the human form. This course is geared toward high school students who are interested in adding depth to their portfolio for AP, IB or college admission with successful figure studies. We will begin the class by focusing on basic figure drawing skills, developing long poses of the figure (nude) and finish with portrait studies. What you learn in the course you will easily be able to continue on your own. Supplies included. Portfolio Preparation July week 10 a.m. 4:30 p.m. $350; $400 FOR CREDIT $50 fee Portfolio Preparation students will create pieces for a college level portfolio. Instruction includes composition, observational drawing and building to larger scale drawings. The class will discuss the college admission and application process as well as the techniques for capturing and sharing portfolio images. Grades will be issued to students taking the class for credit. Bring lunch each day. Supplies included. The instructor, Ben Harle, is the Assistant Dean of Admissions. Publication Illustration July week 1 4 p.m. $169 $25 fee This class will explore illustrations made specifically for magazines, websites, books and newspapers. Students will create illustrations for their favorite publication and learn how to submit illustrations for print. No experience required; supplies included. ARTquation NEW July week 1 4 p.m. $169 $25 fee The class will discuss pattern, symmetry, and other elements of visual mathematics. Students will take inspiration from artists such as Leonardo da Vinci, M.C. Esher and Salvador Dali while creating their own ARTquations. No algebra is required! Ceramics: Wheel Throwing July week 10 a.m. 4 p.m. $350 $75 fee Students will learn wheel throwing and trimming techniques and receive critique regarding their design. The class will take place in the ceramics studio at the Kansas City Art Institute and is designed for students at any skill level. Supplies, including clay and glaze, will be provided. Wear closed toe shoes and clothes that can get dirty. Bring lunch each day. Photography: Setting the Stage NEW July week 10 a.m. 4 p.m. $350 $50 fee Actors, wardrobe, lighting, and scenery will set the stage for students photographs. During class, students will discuss the value and potential problems of capturing a staged image. No experience required. Supplies included; additional props welcome. Bring lunch each day. Traditional Animation Aug week 9 a.m. noon $169 $25 fee Find out what it takes to become an animator. Whether you enjoy the narrative or the experimental, this course offers the ability to create highly engaging work in the field of animation. Using hands-on mediums, you will become part of a creatively charged environment that furthers your artistic skill sets and brings your ideas to life. Museum Observation NEW Aug week noon to 4 p.m. $219 $25 fee Explore the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art through drawing. Guided by the instructor, students will spend each day at the museum drawing from observation. All classes will conclude with a critique so students can strengthen their drawing and observation skills. Supplies included; no prerequisites. MID-CONTINENT PUBLIC LIBRARY ACCESS ART EVENT KCAI partners with the Mid-Continent Public Library to provide workshops for adults and children. At the first Access Art event, there will be free instructed art activities for all ages, so bring the whole family and join in the fun!
