1 January/February 2012 Vol. 3 No. 6 Onsite Damage For many of our citizens, 2011 was a challenging and heartbreaking year. In January, record cold temperatures caused the natural gas supply from El Paso to run out. Several weeks passed before it was restored to Tucson and Sierra Vista. With no heat in homes, water pipes froze over the holidays, broke, then thawed as temperatures rose back to normal. As folks returned from out-of-town vacations, they found water damage. Plumbers worked around the clock for a month to restore service. June's temperatures soared to three digits, the Monument Fire logged in at 1,400 degrees as it roared down the canyons of the Huachuca Mountains fueled by 70 mph wind gusts. The July monsoons always bring hope to the valley, but not this time. More destruction and heartbreak followed as torrential rains washed fire debris down streams that moved earth, flooded properties, and invaded homes. This first week in January 2012 has brought spring temperatures and daffodils are popping up already, giving hope for a promising Happy New Year! Onsite Damage from Monument Fire The Monument Fire burned across the Huachuca Mountains for two weeks, blowing down three canyons in succession and leaving surviving homes, once invisible from the highway, in full view against In This Issue Onsite Damage Let s Talk Inspections Effluent Filter Service Tips Homeowner Pete Tunstall takes a moment while at his home that burned on June 19, 2011, in the Monument Fire near Sierra Vista. Tunstall lived in this house since Courtesy of Dean Knuth, Arizona Daily Star. The Tunstall family on a brighter day. 2 the barren landscape. In the middle of the first week, the fire jumped State Highway 92 and burned five miles toward the San Pedro River. The majority of homes across the highway were built after 2001, and they had septic tanks with plastic risers and with plastic risers and inspection ports at the end of the leachfields. Poly Lok Extend & Lok a must for repair bags Extend & Lok pipe extensions come in 3 and 4 inch sizes with a tapered end for hard to make repairs. The fitting slides into ABS, thin wall PVC, clay, cast iron, asbestos, orangeburg, and Schedule 40 pipe. It even fits tightly in rubber pipe. Don t leave home without Extend & Lok! Site of Our Lady of the Sierras. The cross is the only icon untouched, the chapel and home were burned. The elevator shaft (above the house that was spared) marks the remains of the home belonging to the foundation's family. They had only minutes to flee. Inserting an Extend & Lok into a distribution box that was too short on initial installation. Inserting a replacement outlet baffle using an Extend & Lok makes excavating around the outside of the tank unnecessary. After the Department of Public Safety allowed residents to return, Don and I visited systems we service to check for damage and safety issues. Although there was nothing left of the first home (pictured above), the septic tank was obvious. One
3 riser had melted into it. The other, only four feet away, was only slightly damaged. We secured the lid and moved on. Partially melted riser and lid. Charred trees surrounded a bird-watching bed and breakfast, but birds were already feasting at the remaining feeders. Both risers had melted into the septic tank, leaving only their corrugated impressions in the soil. We covered the 2-foot-wide holes with temporary Tuf-tite commercial grade lids, then drove further up the canyon. We found several more tanks with missing risers and temporarily covered the holes. Visit the Radisson Suites in Tucson for a winter getaway. Above: Corrugated sidewalls are all that remain of this riser. Left: Risers and lids burned into the tank.
4 What is your company selling? Trust or Price? Larger Tuf tite commercial lids temporarily cover gaping holes. We replaced risers on six septic tanks, repaired 60 inspection ports, and inspected three tanks for structural damage after pumper engines parked on them. The engines supplied water to protect the homes. Just as folks were returning to assess and clean up the fire damage, torrential rains washed down the canyons, carrying boulders, burned timbers, remains of homes, muck, and ash 10 miles to the San Pedro River. Roads were impassible and many more were washed out. How many times have you heard someone say that a person presents him or herself well in a job interview? Presenting yourself well goes a long way in acquiring trust from customers. When you do a consultation, you are selling the job, but customers are interviewing you for theirs. 1. Look sharp, wrinkle free clean uniform, be on time 2. Introduce yourself 3. Speak clearly, make eye contact with customers 4. Be confident but humble 5. Know your subject 6. Explain everything you will do for the quoted price 7. When giving your flat rate, look directly at them Arizona Onsite Wastewater Recycling Association Mission Statement The gathering storm, the first of the season. Provide value to membership, rural and suburban property owners, those engaged in the onsite industry, and Arizona residents through education, training, promotion of quality services and advocacy regarding onsite wastewater treatment, reuse, and management.
5 Ash and mud run in rivulets five miles downstream. Burned leachfield inspection port. INSPECTORS! The inspector performing the point of sale inspection must be the one who signs the certification. Rule 18 9 A316 C: The inspector shall complete a Report of Inspection on a form approved by the Department of Environmental Quality, sign it, and provide it to the person transferring the property. Each inspector is responsible for his own inspection report and attests to that by his signature. Southwest Conference Water and sludge flow downstream seven miles through the Cavalry Wash dry bed. A slurry of water, mud, and ash moved tons of decorative rock from properties, slammed open doors, broke through low windows, flooded homes, and covered onsite systems. Melted inspection ports were covered with mud. (Inspection ports are critical to evaluating absorption fields, especially in this area where soils are poor.) Don and I dug out visible ports, then added a coupling and 12-inch pipe extension with cap. After the first rain, homes were protected by sandbags in anticipation of the next flood. The 2012 Southwest Onsite Wastewater Conference hosted by the Arizona County Directors of Environmental Services Association is on Feb. 1 2 in Laughlin, Nev. NAWT Before the conference, the National Association of Wastewater Transporters will sponsor the inspection training and certification course on Jan
