COURSE DESCRIPTION: Together with HEB 5110, these courses introduce the basic grammar and vocabulary of Old Testament Hebrew. Emphasis is placed on understanding word formation and building vocabulary as a foundation for developing reading proficiency. You will begin to read the Hebrew Old Testament during these courses. II. COURSE OBJECTIVES: At the end of this course, each student will have acquired: A. A knowledge of the grammatical features and the functions of the major verb forms of Old Testament Hebrew. B. A familiarity with commonly used words in the Hebrew Old Testament, especially words with important theological significance. C. A basic skill in using exegetical tools through translation practices on selected texts from the Hebrew Old Testament. D. An ability to recite the original Hebrew text of Psalm 23. III. REQUIRED MATERIALS: A. Required for this semester: Weingreen, J., A Practical Grammar for Classical Hebrew (Oxford University Press, 2nd ed., 1959). B. Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia (BHS) (small size edition, paperback; American Bible Society, 1985). C. The New Brown-Driver-Briggs Hebrew and Aramaic Lexicon (Hendrickson, repr. 1996). (You may also use a software program containing a tagged BHS text and a digital lexicon, if you wish.) IV. COURSE REQUIREMENTS: A. Overview: 1. Review material daily and complete class assignments on time. 2. Pass all the vocabulary and grammatical quizzes. 3. Pass the test on reading and recitation. 4. Pass the Mid-term and Final exams. 5. Participate fully in all class activities.

Review material daily and complete class assignments on time: Daily review is the key to mastering a new language, therefore you are required to keep a daily log recording your daily review of Hebrew (see "Daily Review Record" form in this syllabus. Each exercise is assigned on the day it appears in the "Course Schedule" and is due the following Monday. Read the new lesson in Weingreen before class and try translating one or two sentences in its exercise before viewing the narrated presentation. Since we are dealing mainly with the verbs, be sure to also read the parallel verb chart in the back of the book and consult the handout verb charts. 2. Pass the vocabulary quizzes: The quizzes this semester will be fewer but perhaps more challenging than last semester. Items in each quiz will be a combination from: (1) Weingreen's vocabulary lists (2) Items specified in the verb tables (see the Review Verb List) (3) Significant words from the assigned OT passages. 3. Recitation test: You will be asked to recite Psalm 23. You will record your recitation and upload it into the course page. 4. Pass Mid-Term and Final Exams: The exams will normally have three sections: vocabulary, grammar, and sentence translation (which may include the OT passages assigned for exercises). The final exam will be partially cumulative. 5. Participate in Class Forums: Limited forums provide an avenue through which students can interact with each other and with the professor regarding any matters that are at issue in the study. C. Course Evaluation and Grading: 1. Time Distribution: Though our grading will be mainly based on the quality of the student's work and not on the quantity of time spent, the following information may be helpful to you in your planning: For each week's lesson, you need to invest at least 10 hours of concentrated study. Of these 10 hours, 2-3 hours are designated for viewing the narrated presentations on the lessons, exercises, and vocabulary, about 2 hours are for the assigned exercise, 2 hour for review and reading the upcoming lessons, about 2 hours for daily review, and about 1 hour for participation in forums. Altogether, the workload for the course will be about 135 hours. 2. Grade Distribution: Exercises 30% Quizzes 10% Reading/Recitation 05% Daily Review Records 05% Mid-Term Exam 20% Final Exam 25% Forum Participation 05%

SSM STYLESHEET The official guide for all written work in connection with this course is the SSM Stylesheet, which is available from the Faculty Administrative Assistant s office (Schuster 1xx). It is based on the Chicago Manual of Style as summarized in the latest edition of Kate L. Turabian, A Manual for Writers of Term Papers, Theses, and Dissertations. It includes guidelines related to grammar and style, organization of papers, abbreviations and numbers, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, quotations, using Greek and Hebrew words, using and citing sources, footnotes, bibliography, and using the internet. The instructor reserves the right to return written work that displays poor spelling, consistent grammatical errors, incorrect style, and/or poor general appearance. The basic parameters are set out in the Stylesheet. If your work is returned for any of these reasons, you may resubmit it within two weeks of its return. If you do not revise and resubmit your work, you will receive a zero for the assignment. Dishonesty in assignments, examinations, written papers, or other work is contrary to scriptural principles of Christian living and an affront to fellow students and your instructors. Plagiarism occurs when you present another person s ideas or words as your own, or when you intentionally or unintentionally fail to acknowledge or cite the source of the ideas you use. Acknowledging and citing sources involves placing quotation marks around all the material you have taken (or paraphrased) from books, articles, internet sites, other students papers, or other work you have not personally produced. It also involves listing full information

Specific examples of plagiarism include but are not limited to the following: 1. Borrowing the words, sentences, ideas, conclusions, examples and/or organization of an assignment from a source (e.g., a book, an article, another student s paper, a tape/video, an internet site) without acknowledging the source. 2. Submitting work done by another student in part or in whole in place of original work. 3. Submitting assignments received from the Internet, from commercial firms or from any other person or group. 4. Knowingly aiding another student in plagiarizing an assignment as defined above. You may not submit work that is part of a group consultation unless it is related to an assignment your syllabus specifically indicates is to be completed as part of a group. If you study for an exam with a review group, you may not reproduce any answers that others have written and submit it as your own work. You may not share with others answers to exam questions you have composed in advance. Any of these actions will be considered plagiarism. Plagiarism will result in academic penalty, and may result in failure in the assignment, failure in the course, and further disciplinary action. When appropriate, your Student Life chaplain will be informed.
