Bauxite High School Scholarship Handbook
Dear Student and Parent(s)/Guardian(s): This handbook is a valuable source of information about scholarships and financial aid. Each year, local organizations, community groups, and businesses offer financial assistance to qualified students. Scholarship information can be found in several places: Counselor s Corner on the school s webpage, the daily bulletin, and on the bulletin board outside the Counselor s office. The information provided in this handbook is only a partial listing of scholarships and financial aid available to students. Students are encouraged to do their own free scholarship searches online through various websites listed in this handbook. Google everything you can think of and add scholarship to it. You re going to be amazed at what you will find. The money is out there and someone will receive it. Why not let it be you? Deadlines may have changed; therefore, students must access the websites for the latest information. If a scholarship application requires a transcript, photo, an essay, or letters of recommendation remember the application is not complete UNLESS these items are included with it. Be sure to request transcripts ahead of time in the Counselor s Office. If the Counselor s Office is submitting the scholarship application all required items must be turned in for it to be complete. Remember it is your responsibility to request what you will need to complete your scholarship applications. If you have questions about any of the materials, please call our counseling office at (501) Sincerely, Deborah Smart Bauxite High School Counselor smartd@bauxiteminers.org TABLE OF CONTENTS Where to Look for Scholarships... 4 How to Apply for Scholarships... 5 College and University Scholarships... 6

Where to Look for Scholarships Ø Your school daily bulletin Ø Your school district website on the scholarship calendar Ø The website of the school you are planning to attend Ø Internet Resources (Search AR scholarships) Bauxite High School does not endorse the above sites; the information is provided for reference only. Students and their families should thoroughly investigate any website or scholarship company before using its services. It is strongly recommended that you DO NOT utilize any services that charge a fee. How to Apply for Scholarships Answer all questions accurately and completely. If asked, be sure to provide information on such items as: Offices held Special awards 4
Special projects Extracurricular Activities Volunteer service Special interests Skills Request letters of recommendation ahead of the deadline. Teachers need time to prepare these letters. Ask a teacher or coach who will write you an outstanding recommendation. Give a resume to the person from whom you request the recommendation. Do not list this person as a reference unless you have received permission to do so! If you are given a copy of the recommendation, keep it with your other college application materials. Sometimes you can ask the original letter writer to reuse his/her letter for another scholarship application. Be sure to write a thank you note to the person who wrote the letter of recommendation. College and University Scholarships Colleges and universities offer several types of scholarships and financial aid. Complete the appropriate financial aid forms and scholarship applications, which can be obtained online or from the Financial Aid Office of the institution you plan to attend. Federal Grant Programs All federal money must be applied for through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA application may be accessed online beginning in January 2013 at Parents/guardians must have their 2013 income tax information in order to complete the application. Be sure to use the fafsa.ed.gov website as there are several that will charge for this service. Federal Pell Grants are available to undergraduate students with financial need who will be attending an eligible college or vocational school at least half-time. Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (SEOG) provides supplemental funding for students with exceptional financial need. Once a Pell Grant is awarded, thehe college financial aid office will assist eligible students in determining whether or not they qualify for the Federal SEOG. 5
State Aid Students will be able to apply for state and lottery funded scholarships beginning November 1 through the Arkansas Department of Higher Education YoUniversal Application found at Chronological Scholarship Listing These dates are for planning purposes only and may change at any time.
