1 Y Prize- Economic and Social effects of Rocket Design Objectives Student will be able to use the scientific method to explore and conduct an investigation. Students will use the guiding question and one problem to explore how physical changes in the rocket can alter the flight pattern. Students will explore legal issues in the shuttle launches and how humans have been affected. Suggested Grade Level 7 th grade Subject Areas Math Technology Humanities Timeline 5-7 days Background Knowledge The purpose behind this exploration is to allow for students to decide how they want to explore the problem and perform the study. This lesson would be best used with a study of the planets. The teacher will need to have some background on history of rockets and history of space travel. Bring in some articles about Discovery and Columbia Space Shuttle flights for Discovery, there are great articles in USA Today Newspaper, week of 7/25-7/29 of Students will need to have a general understanding of the body parts of a rocket: body tube, nose cone, and fins. Students will need to have an understanding of the scientific method and mind maps (webbing, mind webs, etc.) Materials paper towel rolls straws ¾ length paper towel rolls Graph paper toilet paper rolls Glue Tape Cone shaped drinking cups Colored Pencils

2 Markers Cardboard Any other materials that might be used to build rockets Computer lab Lesson Day 1 Pose the following question to the students, With the recent grounding of the space shuttle flights, what factors will determine the desire to continue to explore space and the importance of human lives? Tell the students that this will be their guiding question for the next several days. Start off class with a short film on rockets or launching a rocket. Take the students to the computer lab to do some research. The students will need to research rocket design and find one rocket part to do some extended research on. In their journals, have the students answer the following questions, What did you learn about your specific body part? What is the history behind that part? How has it been modified over time? Include pictures, diagrams, and a bibliography. Day 2 The students will have two days to build and test rockets using whatever materials they choose. Each team receives 10 million dollars in their bank account to gather materials, test rockets, and remove the waste. You will need to assign cost amounts for each material to build the rocket, for waste removal from the launch and flight, and for the actual launch. You are the banker, and throughout the time of building, charge teams for extra expenses such as: fuel spilled, need to pay for cleanup of waste, or a person fell during building process and team needs to pay for health care costs. Use an air-powered launch pad to launch all rockets. Examples can be found on the Estes Rocket web site found in the Resource section of this lesson. On building days students can test as many times as time allows. In their journals, have the students answer the following questions, Did your rocket achieve the results that you designed it for? How far away did you land overall for the day? What do you plan to do tomorrow to achieve more successful results? Day 3 Today is a building day. Towards the end of class, have the students use their journals to record their answers to the following questions: Did your rocket achieve the results that you designed it for? How far away did you land overall for the day? What do you plan to do tomorrow to achieve more successful results? How has money come into play in your testing? What unexpected results occurred? How did they effect your decisions in building? Day 4 Today is launch day. The students will launch in 10-minute increments. If

3 students are not ready to launch during their time allotted, they don t launch. In their journals, have the students answer the following questions: Did your rocket achieve the results wanted? Why or why not? What factors might NASA engineers look at when making modifications to the shuttle? How will engineers be affected in the grounding of the flights of the shuttle, and how do you think they will be able to solve the problem of the foam? What do you think future environmental issues might be the continuation of space exploration? What human issues might arise from the desire to continue space exploration? Extensions Project for Students: You will need to present your findings to the class using graphs, diagram, pictures, etc. You can choose to make a poster, PowerPoint presentation or other a newspaper article highlighting the purpose and importance of your body part to rocket for flight. Have students research legal issues involved in space exploration, and the environmental effects, currently and in the future. Have students answer the questions, How do we remove the waste, already produced, from space. Who is responsible? Have students answer the question, How have deaths of astronauts affected our country as a whole and individuals? Ask the question, Why should we continue with space exploration? Evaluation/Assessment Collect the journals and use the rubric (Addendum 2) to compile a final grade. Teacher will also have to record launch results in include in the rubric. 4 Addendum 1 Student Directions In teams of four, you will need to choose one problem, from the list below, to investigate using the scientific method to explore how changes in the rockets shape can vary flight. On the team there will need to be an accountant, an engineer, a journalist, and a test analyst. Each team will receive 10 million dollars to make modifications on their rocket, test the product, and remove the waste. Each team needs to first research the purpose behind their specific body part and the history of how it has evolved. You are building the rockets to see how close you can get to the target for the prize. You will also be judged on the team s work, including the body tube, the nose cone, and the fins. You will also be judged on the creativity in the designs and in overall appearance. All group members will support other team members in their roles, while also having the opportunity to fire a member if they are not doing their job. If a team member is fired, they will not be able to participate. Here is a description of each role: Journalist: Will need to record all decisions made on purchases, what the thoughts as a group were to choose how to build each rocket, and they will need to record information gathered by other team members for the final production. Test Analyst: Will need to gather height and weight of each rocket launched. The test analyst will also have to determine the distance traveled. Engineer: Will build the rockets that the team decides to build, clean up the mess produced from this, and launch the rockets. Accountant: Will keep track of all purchases made and keep a running balance of the total remaining. Each day will turn in the running total to the banker if balances do not match up, penalties for missing funds can arise. Problem 1: What are the implications of small changes in the shape and size of the fins? Problem 2: How does the length of the body tube change the distance traveled in flight? Problem 3: Do the number of fins matter in the height the rocket achieves? Problem 4: How does material of the fins affect the flight pattern of the rocket?
