4 THE WORLD OF EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION While studying at Wintec for the Bachelor of Teaching Early Childhood Education, I found the tutors amazing. They were there supporting me every step of the way and were quick to give advice when I needed it most. The best part about the degree is that I was in a centre for 12 hours a week which allowed me to experience the role of being a teacher. This has given me the skills to gain a full time position as a qualified registered teacher. Emma ECE Teacher 4 Education

8 THE WORLD OF EDUCATION It was her three grandchildren that inspired Naomi Higgins to move into Early Childhood Education. I felt that if I learnt about how to become an ECE teacher, this would bless my life as a grandmother. She has now completed the Bachelor of Teaching as an outstanding student. Coming into a tertiary environment initially felt overwhelming for Naomi, but she found the level of support from tutors helped significantly. She also appreciated the robust curriculum within the degree. Both these aspects have flowed naturally into her professional practice. I try to offer children the same strengths that I experienced; an in-depth curriculum and a teacher that is supportive of their learning, she says. I know how it feels to be scared, vulnerable and unsure within a learning environment, and I also know how it feels to have a teacher reassure you as a student that you can do it. For those considering starting study in this area or upskilling within their current role, Naomi has a simple tip: it s worth it. Naomi ECE Teacher 8 Education
