1 2013 Lay Ministry Equipping Resources Catalog I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work among you will bring it to completion by the day of Jesus Christ. Philippians 1:6 (NRSV)

2 Table Of Contents Basic Course Core Courses New Courses Advanced Courses Refresher Courses Other Lay Servant Information Salt and Light Let me tell you why you are here. You re here to be salt-seasoning that brings out the Godflavors of this earth. If you lose your saltiness, how will people taste godliness? You re here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world. God is not a secret to be kept. (Matthew 5:13-14, The Message) Each one of us has a responsibility in our spiritual life to be salt and light to others, to help them along on their spiritual journey. The courses in this catalog provide ways of equipping laity to be salt and light to the world around them. Early Methodism stressed both personal holiness and social holiness. It was, and still is, not enough to be formed in the faith without outward expressions of that faith which are lived out in our homes, workplaces, and communities. A Word About Servants In 2012 the General Conference of The United Methodist Church approved legislation to change the name of Lay Speaking Ministries to Lay Servant Ministries. For several quadrennia, various name changes were proposed none of which adequately described the role of this leadership development program. The term servant was chosen because it best describes what Jesus told his disciples in John 13 after he himself had performed the duties of the lowliest servant. 12 After he had washed their feet, had put on his robe, and had returned to the table, he said to them, Do you know what I have done to you? 13 You call me Teacher and Lord and you are right, for that is what I am. 14 So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another s feet. 15 For I have set you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you. 16 Very truly, I tell you, servants are not greater than their master, nor are messengers greater than the one who sent them. 17 If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them. The role of servant that Jesus took (doulos) is better translated slave. The disciples, who were embarrassed by this act of humility, listened as Jesus spelled out the implications of what he had done. He told them what was expected for their own lives. Not only were they to pass on his teachings by word and deed, but they were to do all this through selfless love by serving one another without pride or prestige. In this world, so centered in pride and selfcenteredness, the word servant is certainly not a position to be desired. In some cultures it means the lowest slave, but we should not be offended. Instead, we should be honored to serve as our Lord and Savior did. Jesus said to the disciples and says to us today, Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them (v. 17). The gospel is a life to be lived, not just an ideal to be contemplated. We are called to live out our discipleship as servants in leadership! What s Inside? This catalog offers our latest resources designed to equip laity for their roles in ministry as disciples. The Basic Course is the beginning course for Lay Servant Ministries and for leadership development. All lay servants must complete the Basic Course. This course can also be used for other laity in the church to acquaint them with their gifts, calling, and responsibilities as followers of Christ. A resource-planning guide in the back of this catalog will help individuals and district or conference leaders make decisions about training needs. Note: When ordering resources from Bookstore.UpperRoom.org, enter the product number from this catalog rather than doing a search. Lay Servant Ministries God is calling each of us to be witnesses who proclaim the presence and power of God through all that we are and all that we do. Listen. Is God calling you to a new way of service and asking you to be a local church or certified lay servant? Lay servants are called to proclaim the gospel in many different ways, in leadership and supportive roles, to help others grow in a life-giving relationship with Jesus Christ. At the General Conference of 2012 the name of this leadership development program was changed from Lay Speaking Ministries to Lay Servant Ministries. There is no change in the process of becoming a local church or certified lay servant from the former lay speaker process. There was, however, a role of lay speaker added to the program which includes specific preparation and accountability processes. A Lay Servant is þ þ An active, supportive (professing) member of a United Methodist church; þ þ Eager to serve the church, community, and world; þ þ Well-informed on scripture and on the doctrine, heritage, organization, and life of The United Methodist Church; þ þ Committed to witnessing through church and community leadership, caregiving ministries, and spoken communication; þ þ Willing to improve his/her skills by training for service. A Lay Speaker is a certified lay servant who is called and equipped to provide pulpit supply in the absence of a pastor. Two Types of Lay Servants 1. Local Church Lay Servants: serve in and through their local churches. To be recognized as a local church lay servant, one must be recommended by his/her pastor and church council or charge conference, and complete the Lay Servant Ministries Basic Course. Each participant must reapply annually, reporting on service rendered and learning achieved during the year. Every three years the lay servant must complete a refresher course or continuing education course relating to his/her ministry. 2. Certified Lay Servants: serve in their own churches, in other churches, and through district or conference projects and programs. This offers them the opportunity to expand their outreach and to enrich their ministry through the various advanced courses. To be recognized as a certified lay servant, one must be recommended by his/her pastor and church council or charge conference and complete the Lay Servant Ministries Basic Course as well as one Learning & Leading (Lay Servant Advanced) Course. Each lay servant must report and be renewed annually, and he/she must complete at least one Advanced Course every three years. 2 *Available only as a PDF at Bookstore.UpperRoom.org. These are designated by the GBOD logo Learning and Leading and are listed at Leading Worship 101 for Lay People Do you read scripture or lead the people in prayers on Sunday morning? Would you like to sharpen your skills for the way you communicate at the lectern? Leading Worship 101 will focus on basic worship leadership skills for lay persons ( liturgists or lay readers ) who assist the pastor in leading Christian worship. If you currently help lead worship in your congregation or would like to prepare for such leadership, this course led by instructor Dan Benedict is for you. Particular emphasis is given to basic skills: understanding your leadership role in relation to other leaders and the congregation, reading scripture, leading prayer, distribution of the elements at the Lord s Supper, and basic do s and don ts of effective worship leadership. Biblical Storytelling I Learning the sacred stories of scripture by heart and sharing them with others is both an ancient-future art and a powerful spiritual practice. This workshop s methods, developed by the Network of Biblical Storytellers International, are for everyone who wishes to learn, to tell, and to connect with God and other people through sacred story yes, you can do it too! By the end of the two-week workshop, you will be able to share at least one text with others by heart, and you will understand how this completely nontechnological art fits into a digital-communications world. Whether you work with children in Sunday school or dream of bringing scripture to life in worship or elsewhere, your ministry and your spirit will be enriched by this art. This is a two-week introduction to the ancient-future art and spiritual discipline of telling the sacred stories of scripture. Participants will learn to prepare, learn, and tell a biblical text by heart (not memory ) using the methods of the Network of Biblical Storytellers International. The workshop is taught by NBS member and United Methodist deacon Beth Galbreath. Biblical Storytelling II This workshop, also led by Beth Galbreath, expands on the methods taught in Biblical Storytelling I. It explores a number of storytelling genres as well as telling the biblical text, including midrash, chancel drama, firstperson storytelling, puppetry, and more. The workshop also offers specific ideas for learning tough passages; using and not abusing voice and body; and enhancing tellings with props, digital media, and more, with children and adults. It also suggests ways to deepen your practice of this art as a personal spiritual discipline. Anyone who is already practicing the art of storytelling, biblical or secular, is welcome; Biblical Storytelling I is an excellent starting place for those new to the art but is not required. In this three-week workshop, you will dive deeper into developing your unique storytelling voice, expand your technique, and polish your art. Biblical Storytelling I is not a prerequisite for Biblical Storytelling II, but previous storytelling experience is highly recommended. The workshop will also help the student learn about worship itself and the role of technology in design, appropriateness, and excellence. Special consideration will be given to budget and a low-cost approach to technology implementation. This workshop is designed for the church volunteer or pastor who would classify themselves as beginners in multimedia experience.
