RECRUITMENT AND SCHOLARSHIPS/FELLOWSHIPS What programs and initiatives has your school found successful in the recruitment of minority and/or female students? In an effort to target as many students as possible from underrepresented populations, representatives from the college of business administration at UT Knoxville attend recruiting events sponsored by the Tennessee Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (TACRAO). For several years, the college of business administration has participated in the PhD Project, a national initiative to recruit minorities into academic careers. It has been instrumental in our successfully recruiting minority students into our PhD programs, and two of our newest minority faculty hires participated in this program as graduate students. Please describe any scholarship and/or fellowship opportunities for minority and/or female students attending your school. Name of fellowship program: Graduate Diversity Enhancement Fellowships Deadline for application: February 20th Fellowship award amount: $15,000 stipend, graduate student health insurance Website or other contact information: gradstudies.utk.edu/fellowships.shtml The Graduate School is accepting applications for a graduate fellowship designed to promote the educational and related benefits of a diverse graduate student body. This fellowship will provide financial support to first-time enrolled graduate students demonstrating significant potential to contribute to the educational mission of the graduate school by presenting one or more of a wide range of diverse attributes. The graduate school seeks to recruit, enroll and retain qualified students who will benefit from educational and social interactions with peers who come from different backgrounds and who have different life experiences, perspectives and goals. Name of fellowship program: The Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans Number of fellowships awarded: 30 Deadline for application: November 1st Fellowship award amount: Half tuition Website or other contact information: The Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans supports fellows for up to two years of graduate study in any subject anywhere within the United States. Candidates for these fellowships must be either holders of green cards, naturalized citizens or children of two naturalized citizen parents. PROMINENT ALUMNI/FACULTY Please provide information about prominent minority faculty members at your school. Hui Chang, professor of economics Hui Chang conducts empirical economic research and specializes in econometrics, mathematical economics and modeling and forecasting. His work has been published in numerous journals including Education Economics, American Economist, Journal of Regional Science, Econometrica and Review of Economics and Statistics. He received a PhD and MA from Vanderbilt University and an MA and BA from Taiwan University. Mandyam Srinivasan, professor of statistics, operations and management science Professor Mandyam Srinivasan is an expert on operations management and supply chain management. His research centers around performance modeling and analysis of manufacturing. He is a member of the Institute of Industrial Engineers and the recipient of multiple awards, including the 2003 award in Excellence for Service to the IIE Transactions Journal from the Institute of Industrial Engineers. Professor Srinivasan received his PhD from Northwestern University, an MBA from the Indian Institute of Management, an MA from the Indian Institute of Technology and a BS from the University of Tennessee College of Engineering. Harold Black, professor of finance Professor Harold Black is an expert on financial institutions. His research focuses on the monetary system and markets. He received both his PhD and MBA from Ohio State University and his BBA from the University of Georgia. Please provide information about prominent minority alumni from your school. Richard L. Rick Federico, MBA 1976, chairman and co-chief executive officer, P.F. Chang s China Bistro, Inc. Richard Federico is the chairman and co-ceo of P.F. Chang s China Bistro Inc. He has been an executive of such restaurants as Macaroni Grill, Bennigan s and Steak and Ale. He was cofounder/partner and vice president of Grady s Goodtimes restaurants. 803
2 Min Kao, MBA 1977, cofounder and chief executive officer, Garmin Ltd. Min Kao is CEO and director of Garmin Ltd., the world s largest manufacturer of GPS devices. Mary Holcomb, associate professor of marketing and logistics Mary Holcomb researches logistics, supply chain strategy and network design. In 1999 and 2000, she was the recipient of the Outstanding MBA Second Year Faculty Award. She is an active member of the Decision Sciences Institute and the author of several books, including Internet Speed: The Impact of E-Commerce on Logistics (Ernst & Young, 2000) and Striving for Excellence: New Measures for Logistics (Ernst & Young, 1999). Dr. Holcomb received her PhD, MBA and BS from the University of Tennessee. Deborah Murphy, associate professor of finance Deborah Murphy s expertise is in investments, corporate crime and corporate governance. Her research focuses on investments, corporate finance and business ethics. Professor Murphy has published in the Journal of Portfolio Management, Journal of Business Ethics, Financial Analysts Journal and Family Business Review. In 2004, she was named a Reagan Scholar by the University of Tennessee. Professor Murray is an active member of the Financial Management Association. She received her PhD from the University of Florida, Gainesville. Anne Smith, associate professor of management Anne Smith was the 2003 and 2004 recipient of the Keally Teaching Award and the 2003 recipient of the Outstanding Reviewer Award from the Academy of Management. Her research interests include management teams, sense making and international expansion. Professor Smith teaches courses on top management teams, case pedagogy and the telecommunications service industry. Her work has appeared in such journals as the Journal of Management Inquiry, Organization Science and Journal of Business Research. She received her MBA and PhD from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and her BS from the University of Virginia. Please provide information about prominent alumnae from your school. Global Business Institute (GLOBI) The Global Business Institute is the college of business administration s response to the tremendous change brought about by the internationalization of business and higher education. GLOBI actively strives to encourage the inclusion of international business content in the curricula and in the activities of the college. GLOBI functions as an interface among entities of the university college of business administration, other academic disciplines and programs at the, as well as business, government and the local community. GLOBI searches and promotes international research, teaching, study and cultural exchange programs. GLOBI seeks funding to support CBA international initiatives. Black Graduate and Professional Student Association (BGPSA) omsa.utk.edu/organizations/bgpsa.php The Black Graduate and Professional Student Association is an organization for minority graduate and professional students, faculty, staff and administrators at the. BGPSA was founded at UTK during the academic year. The BGPSA is one of many student organizations supported by minority student affairs (MSA) and housed within the Black cultural center. The BGPSA s goal is to provide academic, professional and social support for minority graduate and professional students and to assist in their recruitment and retention. A graduate 804

The BGPSA is designed to provide them with a rich, empowering and wellrounded education through academic assistance, social support, network opportunities and professional development. Our weekly meetings serve as a way of organizing and unifying our community to bring attention to issues which effect each of us regardless of our sexuality. LASO coordinates activities and meetings regarding Latin-American culture, including food, dance, sport and government. Asian American Association (AAA) web.utk.edu/~asianaa/index.html The Asian American Association at UTK promotes awareness of Asian-American issues, serves as a representative voice of the Asian-American community, celebrates the diversity and commonalities of Asian-Americans and provides a social support network for our members. Although the AAA deals primarily with Asian-American issues, our membership is not by any means restricted to those of Asian descent. The Asian American Association welcomes all members of the UT community regardless of race, religion or national origin to join us in raising cultural awareness and fostering unity and understanding among Asians, Asian-Americans and all other peoples of the UT community. Native American Student Association web.utk.edu/~utaises/homepage.html The purpose of the Native American Student Association is supporting the advancement of Native American students enrolled in the University of Tennessee and the Native American community in general. Also, we provide an extracurricular activity to those students and/or faculty interested in Native American culture. We also serve as the University of Tennessee chapter of the American Indian Science and Engineering Society. Turkish Student Association web.utk.edu/~tsa The mission of the Turkish Student Association is to unite Turkish students, the Turkish community in Knoxville and those interested in Turkish culture; to orient incoming Turkish students to the university environment and assist them in their effort to adjust to the new community (i.e., housing and commuting information, airport pickup, etc.); to facilitate social and intellectual interaction between members; to function as representatives of Turkey to students, the Turkish community in Knoxville, faculty and staff of the University of Tennessee; and to function as a formal body for the purpose of information exchange receiving current news, developments and various other information from Turkey. PERMIAS Knoxville (Indonesian Community and Students Association) PERMIAS (Persatuan Mahasiswa Indonesia di Amerika Serikat) is a nonprofit student organization. Its community is dedicated to promoting social, intellectual and cultural activities for Indonesian students and the community in the Knoxville area as well as assisting Indonesian students who are currently studying in Knoxville and those who are planning to study here. PERMIAS Knoxville strives to provide opportunities and benefits for its members by facilitating the exchange of information between Indonesia, the Indonesian students studying in Knoxville and its community. PERMIAS Knoxville also encourages all Indonesian students in Knoxville and its community to get involved in organizing PERMIAS Knoxville events and to join the organization. In hosting and organizing a variety of events ranging from cultural nights to international fairs, PERMIAS Knoxville works closely with the International House at the University of Tennessee and also the Indonesian Consulate General in Houston, Texas. Burlington Library Initiative The college of business administration is one of four colleges in the university working to develop a satellite facility in the Burlington Library in East Knoxville to assist the community with business services. We will provide small business consulting services, personal financial planning services and other opportunities for our faculty, staff and students to lend their expertise in benefiting the community. 805
4 Dean s advisory council diversity fundraising task force The dean s advisory council is composed of successful business leaders who are UT alumni or friends of the college. The diversity task force is a subset of these leaders who have a specific interest in diversity-related issues. This group will focus on achieving collegewide diversity goals, which include fundraising, professional opportunities and strategic planning. Commission for Blacks The Commission for Blacks is appointed by the chancellor to advise on planning, implementation and evaluation of university programs, policies and services as they relate to Black students, faculty and staff. The commission reports to the director of diversity resources and educational services. Commission for LGBT People The UT Commission for LGBT People is a body appointed by the chancellor to advise on planning, implementation and evaluation of university programs, policies and services designed to improve the status of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people on the Knoxville campus. The commission, in its role as an advocacy group, is committed to the protection and advancement of GLBT students, faculty and staff at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. UT Commission for Women (CFW) The UT Commission for Women is a body appointed by the chancellor to advise on planning, implementation and evaluation of university programs, policies and services designed to improve the status of women on the Knoxville campus. The commission, in its role as an advocacy group, is committed to the advancement of women students, faculty and staff at the UT Institute of Agriculture, UT Medical Center and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Diversity council The college of business administration diversity council is composed of faculty, staff and students who advise the dean on ways to create and maintain a welcoming, supportive and inclusive campus climate. The council addresses matters such as attracting and retaining faculty and staff from underrepresented populations; attracting, retaining and graduating international students and students from historically underrepresented populations; and ensuring that undergraduate curricular requirements include significant intercultural perspectives. Office of minority student affairs In alliance with the mission of the University of Tennessee, the office of minority student affairs supports minority students by providing programs and services that holistically address the cultural, educational and civic growth, thus contributing to their academic success and enhancing the institutional efforts in retaining and graduating minority students for a diverse and complex world. Office of equity and diversity (OED) The office of equity and diversity serves the campus in two primary roles. First, OED provides leadership, resources and services for the university community, and acts as a support for the enhancement of diversity programs campuswide. Second, OED fulfills an important compliance function by working with various legal mandates set out by state and federal law, and university policies as they relate to civil rights, equal employment and affirmative action. Please describe any off-campus resources, activities, programs and/or organizations that may be of interest to minority or female students. Beck Cultural Exchange Center According to its website, the Beck Cultural Exchange Center researches, collects, preserves and exhibits African American achievements and culture. Founded in 1975, the center features books, journals, newspapers, scrapbooks, audio recordings and other memorabilia. Knoxville Turkish Cultural Center knoxvilleturkish.org The Knoxville Turkish Cultural Center is a nonprofit organization that aims to promote respect and mutual understanding through partnerships with other religious and intercultural organizations and through creating platforms where communities can get together, share and exchange various perspectives in an environment of mutual understanding, appreciation and friendship. Events include cultural dinners, trips and festivals. CAREER OPPORTUNITIES Please describe any diversity recruiting events for employers recruiting minority and/or female students at or near your school. MBA career services staff attend several conferences each year (e.g., NBMBAA, NSHMBAA and the international MBA conferences) to network with MBA employers from all over the country and world.
