2 Energy Efficiency...and money saving tips Most households can save up to 300 a year by using less energy or using energy in a more efficient way, that s good for you and the planet. Saving energy, saving money. You can save money and energy within your home at little or no cost. Try out the following tips and see what difference this makes to your energy costs: Dry clothes on the line and not in the tumble dryer. Loft insulation keeps heat in your home - don't squash it with stuff you put in the loft. Cook food with pan lids on and only boil the amount of water you need in the kettle. Use less water in the bath or take a shower instead. Choose energy efficient electrical products. Wash clothes and dishes on a full load and choose a low temperature setting.

3 Energy Efficiency...and money saving tips Can I check how much energy I am using? You can use an energy monitor to see where you are using the most energy. You could make a substantial difference to your energy usage. Some energy suppliers will provide these free of charge but prices generally start from 24. Why not take a Home Energy Check to see how much you could save by visiting the Energy Saving Trust on You can fill out a Home Energy Check form online or get a paper version by calling your local Energy Saving Trust centre on Get the best energy deal for you. Make sure you are on the cheapest energy tariff. It is worth shopping around from time to time to see if you are getting the best price for your electricity, gas and heating fuel. Don t assume that dual fuel is always the cheapest. Compare the cost of the cheapest dual fuel supplier with separate cheap gas and cheap electricity supplier. Find the cheapest tariff by visiting a comparison website such as uswitch, MoneySupermarket or SimplySwitch. Look for fixed price tariffs if you want the certainty of the same price for a fixed period; this way you can protect yourself from price rises with a fixed deal. Switch to your company s internet tariff. Internet billing will usually save you up to 10% over the standard

4 tariff and all it means is you get your bills ed to you. Pay by direct debit. By paying fixed estimated installments by direct debit monthly, you will get a better deal than if you pay your bill quarterly on demand. On average you will save between 5-10% on fuels costs. Take a meter reading every time you receive a bill. Don t rely on your energy provider s estimate to be correct. You could be paying too much or too little. If you are not paying enough, you could be faced with a big bill at the end of the year. If you use a pre-payment meter, you will pay even more for the fuel you use. If possible, switch to a billed meter. You may have to pay to get one but the savings are usually worth it.

5 Warm Home Discount. It is an annual credit worth around 140 which is paid direct to your supplier. You could be eligible for the Warm Home Discount if you are: Aged under 80 and receiving only the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit (no Savings Credit). or Aged 80 or over and are receiving the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit, (even if you get Savings Credit as well). Your name or your partners name must be on the bill. You purchase electricity from one of the energy suppliers participating in this scheme.
