1 THE DEFENSE OF THE PORT OF SANTOS One option for the Historical-cultural tourism Project: Encouraging historical-cultural tourism The Colonial version of the Route of the Fortifications Elcio Rogério Secomandi (*) Justification A fantastic history of settlement and territorial conquests. It all started here, in the ancient Captaincy of São Vicente The oriental coast of America, in the south of Ecuador, has few safe bays to shelter ports in their cuts. The three best bays (Baia - in Portuguese language) in the east of Tordesillas, Todos os Santos, Guanabara and Santos, were occupied by the Portuguese in the early days of the colonization. In the colonial period the ships powered by sail "paraded" in front of Fortaleza de Santo Amaro (Santo Amaro Fortress) to reach the current "historic center" of Santos. Nowadays, the Port of Santos shelters modern port facilities and the ships continue to "parade" in front of the rustic and thick walls of the most expressive architectural and military architecture of the State of Sao Paulo, seated on a rocky spur which goes over the mouth of the estuary of Santos. Fortaleza de Santo Amaro is there since 584 "surveilling" the access channel to the Port and, literally, all the beaches of the Santos bay. A stunning look! Many people and institutions who wonder about why relegate to a secondary plane the touristic utilization of the Port of Santos associated with that national historic monument that presents itself so clearly before our eyes, for more than four centuries. And it is not as from today that voluntarily, we seek to encourage inbound tourism professionals to use the Port of Santos old defense system as equipment for the cultural-historical tourism. We have tried, repeatedly, to put under discussion, especially in clubs, some simple proposals aiming at the use of six specimens of colonial military architecture of fixed position of our metropolitan area, that resist time, weather, and sometimes the terrible abandonment. A "case of success" Recently we conducted in Bertioga, the 7th Seminar of Fortified Towns ( / news) bringing together researchers from various cities of Brazil and abroad (Belgium, Netherlands, Portugal and Uruguay). One of the "technical visits" to the monuments aimed at encouraging the creation of a line of inbound tourism, that will begin at Casa do Trem Bélico, Tiro Onze street, #, historic center of Santos, followed by a walk to the Customs (with about 500 m) and take a speedboat to sail the waters of the estuary to reach Fortaleza (fortress) de Santo Amaro, 5 minutes later. In the fortress rustic shooting platforms the tourists occupy heights equivalent to the rd or 4th deck of the vessels that sail that area at a distance between 00m and 50m.

This playful understanding occurs through two permanent exhibitions: upstairs you will find old weapons, military equipment and other "junk" formerly called "trens bélicos", on the ground floor, a "Timeline" and other evidence that in these lands of the ancient Captaincy of São Vicente, it was built up a fantastic history of settlement and territorial conquests. 3 _ a 500m hiking After visiting Casa do Trem Bélico, tourists will hike about 500m until reach the marine terminal to embark to the estuary which shelters the Port of Santos. _ Port of Santos At sea crossing the tourists will do the same nautical route navigated in the Santos estuary since the time of pirates and privateers. In this route of about 6 km they can monitor the work of port terminals on both sides of this estuary. The journey takes about 45 min to reach Fortaleza de Santo Amaro, disembarking at a berth in the historic-cultural monument itself. 4_ Fortaleza de Santo Amaro (Santo Amaro Fortress) ln 584, by means of a royal order from Felipe Il, Fortaleza de Santo Amaro was built in the mouth of the estuary of the Port of Santos, with a project by Giovanni Battista (Juan Bautista) Antonelli, military architect who accompanied the Spanish fleet of Admiral Diogo Flores Valdez. The fleet had as its mission to patrol the east coast of the New World, to the South of Equator, and to fortify Magellan Strait. What is the reason we have the only fortification of Spanish origin outside the realm of Spain? Who was Antonelli and why everything that he designed, currently comprises one of the greatest architectural achievements of mankind? Tourists will be greeted by guides who will present, through music and the permanent exhibition, with beautiful iconography, the military profile of a fantastic history of settlement and territorial conquests. Parking lot Not to return to Casa do Trem Bélico using the same speedboat, the tourists transport vehicles can go to Ponta da Praia, closing the circuit in front of the Fisheries Museum (former Fort Augustus).

In this route of about 6 km they can monitor the work of port terminals on both sides of this estuary.
